In general, it is considered that a pillar between closely-spaced tunnel is sensitive for stress concentration. Stability of a pillar is key factor for excavation of closely-spaced tunnel. In this paper, the study is focused on tracing the behaviors, displacement and plotting damages around tunnels that is modelled with Particle Flow Code, $PFC^{2D}$. Parametric study was performed with changing distance between center of tunnels and coefficient of earth pressure(K). Scaled-model tests were also carried out to validate a numerical analysis model. It was found that $PFC^{2D}$ could show dynamic visualized result in quite good agreement with the experimental test.

Currently, road tunnels and railroad tunnels are building smoke control systems to emit toxic gases and smoke from fires. Among the various smoke control systems, the transverse smoke control system has the disadvantage that air supply or exhaust is performed on only half of the cross-section, rather than air supply or exhaust on the entire cross-section of the tunnel as air is supplied or exhausted by partitioning the wind path. Therefore, this study analyzed the effect of exhaustion through numerical analysis and scaled model tests on the zoning smoke control system, which improved the limitations of the transverse smoke control system. As a result of the scaled model test, the transverse ventilation system exhibited a 25.6% smoke control rate based on the state where no smoke was controled, and zoning smoke control system showed a smoke control rate of 40.8%. In addition, as a result of numerical analysis, it was found that transverse ventilation system did not control fire smoke spreading from the tunnel and continued to spread. On the other hand, zoning smoke control system was found to be smoke controled within a certain section due to the air curtain effect and the flue gas effect.

In this study, the pull-out behavior of tunnel type anchorage of suspension bridges was analyzed based on results from laboratory size model tests and numerical analysis. Tunnel type anchorage has found its applications occasionally in both domestic and oversea projects, therefore design method including failure mode and safety factor is yet to be clearly established. In an attempt to improve the design method, scaled model tests were conducted by employing simplified shapes and structure of the Ulsan grand bridge's anchorage which was the first case history of its like in Korea. In the model tests, the anchorage body and the surrounding rocks were made by using gypsum mixture. The pull-out behavior was investigated under plane strain conditions. The results of the model tests showed that the tunnel type anchorage underwent wedge shape failure. For the verification of the model tests, numerical analysis was carried out using ABAQUS, a finite element analysis program. The failure behavior predicted by numerical analysis was consistent with that by the model tests. The result of numerical analysis also showed that the effect of Poisson's ratio was negligible, and that a plugging type failure mode could occur only when the strength of the surrounding rocks was 10 times larger than that of anchorage body.
Seismic performance evaluation of shear wall is essential as it is the major lateral load resisting member of a structure. The ultimate load and ultimate drift of the shear wall are the two most important parameters which need to be assessed experimentally and verified analytically. This paper comprises the results of monotonic tests, quasi-static cyclic tests and shake-table tests carried out on a midrise shear wall. The shear wall considered for the study is 1:5 scaled model of the shear wall of the internal structure of a reactor building. The analytical simulation of these tests is carried out using micro and macro modeling of the shear wall. This paper mainly consists of modification in the hysteretic macro model, developed for RC structural walls by Lestuzzi and Badoux in 2003. This modification is made by considering the stiffness degradation effect observed from the tests carried out and this modified model is then used for nonlinear dynamic analysis of the shear wall. The outcome of the paper gives the variation of the capacity, the failure patterns and the performance levels of the shear walls in all three types of tests. The change in the stiffness and the damping of the wall due to increased damage and cracking when subjected to seismic excitation is also highlighted in the paper.

This paper deals with the design and property analysis of 7kW-class small-scaled superconducting Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) and testing equipment for a number of performance pre-tests prior to the development of coreless-type superconducting LSM suitable for 600km/h very high speed train. First, the basic design and property analysis are conducted before developing a small-scaled superconducting LSM model with 2-pole superconducting electromagnets, and additionally the cost-down design of the superconducting electromagnets is conducted to use less high-Tc superconducting wire. Finally, the superconducting magnet coil span is selected at 120mm, and input ground armature current of 670Aturns is required to produce 44.7N of thrust based on research findings.
Until recently the other attempts except linear elastic analysis using assumed elastic modulus had not been made in order to evaluate the settlement of the rock fill materials in Korea. Especially, it was almost impossible to predict the precise settlement of the breakwater structure made with dumped rubble stone. In this study, 3 sets of large scaled triaxial compression tests for porous basaltic quarry rocks were carried out and numerical simulation of those triaxial compression tests were performed applying non linear elastic model. Two stress-strain behaviors were compared to study the adaptability of hyperbolic constitutive model for the rubble stone. The results showed quite good agreements between the two stress-strain behaviors. Thus, the hyperbolic constitutive model is thought to be alternative approach evaluate the settlements of the loose rock-fill material.
A lot of twin tunnels were modelled with different pillar widths, rock mass classes and stress ratios in order to consider various site conditions, and the stabilities of the pillars were estimated by numerical analyses and scaled model tests. The strength-stress ratios of the pillar were obtained from three different methods which were using the stresses appeared at the middle point, the whole average and the left/right edges of the pillar. The strength-stress ratio of the pillar edges showed relatively conservative values among them, and it was also practically consistent with the tunnel excavating steps comprising the construction sequence analyses which included the partial excavation and the support system. Scaled model tests were also performed to investigate the tunnel stability, where it was found that cracks were progressively generated from the pillar edges toward the middle point of the pillar. Therefore, in order to both prevent the local damage of pillar and conservatively estimate the tunnel stability, it was thought to be an appropriate method using the strength-stress ratio obtained from the left/right edges of the pillar.

The PWR Nuclear Fuel assembly consists of more than 250 fuel rods that are supported by leaf springs in the cells of more than 10 Spacer Grids (SG) along the rod length. Since it is not easy to conduct mechanical tests on a full-scale model basis, the small-scaled rod bundle (5$\times$5) is generally used for various performance tests during the development stage. As one of the small-scaled tests, a flow test should be carried out in order to verify the performance of the spacer grid like the coolant mixing performance and to obtain the Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) characteristics of the rod bundle over the specified flow range. A vibration test should be also performed to obtain the modal parameters of the bundle prior to the flow test. In this study, we want to develop the estimation procedure of the damping ratio for the small scaled test bundle. For the damping factor of the rod bundle and the grid case at the first vibration mode, as one of the vibration tests, a so-called pluck testing has been performed in air as a preliminary test prior to in-flow damping measurement test. Logarithmic decrement method is used for calculation of the damping ratio. Estimated damping ratio of the rod bundle is about 0.7% with reasonable error of 2% for the previous results. Nonlinear behavior of the rod bundle might be stem mainly Iron the rod-grid support configuration.

This paper describes the load distribution and settlement of rockbolted-drilled shafts subjected to axial and lateral loads with the view to shortening the embedded depth of the pile shaft. The emphasis was on quantifying the reinforcing effects of rockbolts placed from the shafts to surrounding weathered rocks based on small-scale model tests peformed on instrumented piles. The major influencing parameters on reinforcing drilled shaft behavior are the number, the positions on the shaft, the grade, and the inclination angle at which the rockbolts are placed. The model tests was 1/40 scaled simulations of the behavior of the drilled shafts with varying combinations of the major influencing parameters. The incremental effects of reinforcement based on the various parameters have been weighed against load transfer characteristics before and after rockbolt installations.
Fracture toughness of rock is a constant that can indicate the initiation and propagation of cracks due to blasting, excavation, etc. Scaled model tests have been applied to the behavior of tunnels and the stability of limestone mines. Through the scaled model, damaged zone evaluation due to blasting is also carried out, and the scale factor is not applied to the failure-related factors. In this study, DCT (diametral compression test) and finite element method ATENA2D numerical analysis results were compared to determine whether the scale factor could be applied to the fracture toughness of rock. The theoretical values of the scale factor applied to the fracture toughness of the rock and the DCT test results and the numerical results are 0.21~0.46, 0.40, and 0.99MPa ${\sqrt{m}}$ respectively, so these three values should be considered when determining scale factor. It is necessary to derive a suitable scale factor in consideration of the length, time, and mass to which the scale factor is applied, as well as the values of the scale factor of major design factors such as uniaxial compressive strength and density.
