  • Simulation of flow past a complex marine structure requires a fine resolution in the vicinity of the structure, whereas a coarse resolution is enough far away from it. Therefore, a lot of grid cells may be wasted, when a simple Cartesian grid system is used for an Immersed Boundary Method (IBM). To alleviate this problems while maintaining the Cartesian frame work, we adopted an Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) scheme where the grid system dynamically and locally refines as needed. In this study, We implemented a moving IBM and an AMR technique in our basic 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes solver. A Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method was used to effectively treat the free surface, and a recently developed Lagrangian Dynamic Subgrid-scale Model (LDSM) was incorporated in the code for accurate turbulence modeling. To capture vortex induced vibration accurately, the equation for the structure movement and the governing equations for fluid flow were solved at the same time implicitly. Also, We have developed an interface by using AutoLISP, which can properly distribute marker particles for IBM, compute the geometrical information of the object, and transfer it to the solver for the main simulation. To verify our numerical methodology, our results were compared with other authors' numerical and experimental results for the benchmark problems, revealing excellent agreement. Using the verified code, we investigated the following cases. (1) simulating flow around a floating sphere. (2) simulating flow past a marine structure.

  • In this study, a pre-swirl duct for the 180,000 DWT bulk carrier has been designed from a propulsion standpoint using CFD. The stern duct - designed by NMRI - was selected as the initial duct. The objective function is to minimize the value of delivered power in model scale. Design variables of the duct include duct angle, diameter, chord length, and vertical and horizontal displacements from the center. Design variables of the stators are blade number, arrangement angle, chord length, and pitch angle. A parametric design was carried out with the objective function obtained using CFD. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved; and the Reynolds stress model applied for the turbulent closure. A double body model is used for the treatment of free-surface. MRF and sliding mesh models have been applied to simulate the actuating propeller. A self-propulsion point has been obtained from the results of towing and self-propelled computations, i.e., form factor obtained from towing computation and towing forces obtained from self-propelled computations of two propeller rotating speeds. The reduction rate of the delivered power of the improved stern duct is 2.9%, whereas that of the initial stern duct is 1.3%. The pre-swirl duct with one inner stator in upper starboard and three outer stators in portside has been designed. The delivered power due to the designed pre-swirl duct is reduced by 5.8%.

  • Human-human interaction network derived from Roman-fleuve, Togi was constructed. The network has a scale free properties as if most social networks do. The Togi is excellent model system for analyzing network dynamics because it has various characters and complex their interactions. The novel is composed of well-separated 5 sections. I constructed 5 different sub-netwotks from each section. As employing k-core algorithm as a useful tool for obtaining a core network from the complex networks, it is possible to obtain hidden and valuable information from a complex network. As gradually extending one section to another one, I constructed 4 different extended networks. The final one is whole network from the Togi. These results provide new insight that is analyzed by network-based approaches for network dynamics from literature, Togi.

  • Bacteria recognize changes in their population density by sensing the concentration of signal molecules, N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs). AHL-mediated quorum sensing (QS) plays a key role in biofilm formation, so the interference of QS, referred to as quorum quenching (QQ), has received a great deal of attention. A QQ strategy can be applied to membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for advanced wastewater treatment to control biofouling. To isolate QQ bacteria that can inhibit biofilm formation, we isolated diverse AHL-degrading bacteria from a laboratory-scale MBR and sludge from real wastewater treatment plants. A total of 225 AHL-degrading bacteria were isolated from the sludge sample by enrichment culture. Afipia sp., Acinetobacter sp. and Streptococcus sp. strains produced the intracellular QQ enzyme, whereas Pseudomonas sp., Micrococcus sp. and Staphylococcus sp. produced the extracellular QQ enzyme. In case of Microbacterium sp. and Rhodococcus sp., AHL-degrading activities were detected in the whole-cell assay and Rhodococcus sp. showed AHL-degrading activity in cell-free lysate as well. There has been no report for AHL-degrading capability in the case of Streptococcus sp. and Afipia sp. strains. Finally, inhibition of biofilm formation by isolated QQ bacteria or enzymes was observed on glass slides and 96-well microtiter plates using crystal violet staining. QQ strains or enzymes not only inhibited initial biofilm development but also reduced established biofilms.

  • Canthaxanthin (cx) is a potent antioxidant that is chemically synthesized at the industrial scale and has imperative applications in the cosmetic and feed industries. An orange pigmented mesophilic bacterium, designated as K44, was isolated from soil samples of Kargil, India. Biochemical tests, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and FAME analysis of the bacterium indicated it to belong in the genus Dietzia and is distinct from human isolates. The strain showed 98% 16S rRNA gene sequence homology with Dietzia maris DSM 43102. High-performance liquid chromatography profile of the pigments isolated from K44 showed two major peaks absorbing at 465.3 and 475 nm. The liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis of both these peaks revealed their m/z to be 564. The molecular weights, LC-MS/MS fragmentation patterns, and ${\lambda}_{max}$ of these fractions corresponded to all-trans- (475 nm) and 9-cis-(465.3 nm) cx isomers. The antioxidant activities of cis- and trans-cx isomers isolated from this bacterium were found to differ, where the cis-isomer showed higher free radical, superoxide radical, and reactive oxygen species scavenging activities than the alltrans- isomer, suggesting that 9-cis-cx is more effective as an antioxidant than the all-trans-cx.

  • Azotobacter vinelandii, a strict aerobic nitrogen-fixing bacterium, has been extensively studied with regard to the ability of $N_2$-fixation due to its high expression of nitrogenase and fast growth. Because nitrogenase can also reduce cyanide to ammonia and methane, cyanide degradation by A. vinelandii has been studied for the application in the bioremediation of cyanide-contaminated wastewater. Cyanide degradation by A. vinelandii in NFS (nitrogen-free sucrose) medium was examined in terms of cell growth and cyanide reduction, and the results were applied for cyanide-contaminated cassava mill wastewater. From the NFS medium study in the 300 ml flask, it was found that A. vinelandii in the early stationary growth phase could reduce cyanide more rapidly than the cells in the exponential growth phase, and 84.4% of cyanide was degraded in 66 h incubation upon addition of 3.0 mM of NaCN. The resting cells of A. vinelandii could also reduce cyanide concentration by 90.4% with 3.0 mM of NaCN in the large-scale (3 L) fermentation with the same incubation time. Finally, the optimized conditions were applied to the cassava mill wastewater bioremediation, and A. vinelandii was able to reduce the cyanide concentration by 69.7% after 66 h in the cassava mill wastewater containing 4.0 mM of NaCN in the 3 L fermenter. Related to cyanide degradation in the cassava mill wastewater, nitrogenase was the responsible enzyme, which was confirmed by methane production. These findings would be helpful to design a practical bioremediation system for the treatment of cyanide-contaminated wastewater.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the resin infiltration into dentin of one-bottle adhesive systems and self-etching primer bonded to Class V cavities using confocal laser scanning microscope(CLSM). Material and Methods : Forty Class V cavities were prepared from freshly extracted caries-free Human teeth. These teeth were divided into two groups based on the presence of cervical abrasion: Group I, cervical abrasion : Group II, wedge-shaped cavity preparation. Resin-dentin interfaces were produced with two one-bottle dentin bonding systems-ONE COAT BOND(OCB; Coltene$^R$) and Syntac$^R$SPrint$^{TM}$(SS; VIVADENT)-, one self-etching priming system-CLEARFIL$^{TM}$ SE BOND (SB : KURARAY)- and one multi-step dentin bonding system-Scotchbond$^{TM}$Multi-Purpose (SBMP, 3M Dental Products)-as control according to manufacturers' instructions. Cavities were restored with Spectrum$^{R}$(Dentsply). Specimens were immersed in saline for 24 hours and sectioned longitudinally with a low-speed diamond disc. The resin-dentin interfaces were microscopically observed using CLSM. The quality of resin-infiltrated dentin layers were evaluated by five dentists using 0~4 scale. Results : Confocal laser scanning microscopal investigations using primer labeled with rhodamine B showed that the penetration of the primer occurred along the cavity margins. Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan's Multiple Range test revealed that the primer penetration of the group 2(wedge-shaped cavity preparation) was more effective than group 1(cervical abrasion) and that of the gingival interfaces was more effective than the occlusal interfaces. In the one-bottle dentin bonding systems, the resin penetration score of OCB was compatible to SBMP, but those of SS and self-etching priming system, SB were lower than SBMP.

  • This paper presents mobile robot based down-scale mineral resources exploration test system for the USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network) based exploration. The system emulates the actual exploration environment. Underneath the metal free test plate, a metal object is attached. A magneto-meter mounted mobile robot runs around on the plate to find the metal. The measured magneto-meter values are transferred to the host PC via wireless network. The system enables to improve the reliability of simulation as well as to help efficient exploration system design. Metal-detecting experiments were carried out to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed system.

  • Purpose of this study is to define competitiveness and attribution factors of Busan port on attracting high value added business such as transshipment cargo. Research finds condition to become optimal transshipment port comprises both internal and external circumstances. As for the internal circumstance, scale and location of the distripark as well as port facilities and the rates, for the external circumstance, international network and information technology on logistics managements are providing positive effects. Optimal plans to attract transshipment cargo should include, first, development of total logistics management system from port entry to unloading, transportation, processing, loading to departure. Second, assign port as free trade zone under customs law to attract foreign investment and goods traffic through tax exemption. Third, unless it is illegal, government needs to grant substantial freedom to shift capital for the foreign investors which will lead increase in cargo traffic and foreign investment.
