  • When modeling an underwater vehicle uncertainty arises in the presence of unsteady flow. It is difficult to include the uncertainty in the model and is therefore desirable to investigate robust controller design methods for the underwater vehicle. In the paper two robust control methods are applied for the underwater system. One is standard H$_{\infty}$ control and the other is time-varying sliding mode control with modified saturation function. Suboptimal design parameters for H$_{\infty}$ control and design parameters for time-varying switching surfaces are provided. Simulations and comparison are carried out.t.

  • Nonlinear beam coupling phenomena in photorefractive materials are analyzed as a function of the input beam intensities. Signal beam saturation and pump beam depletion are shown to be the intensity-dependent functions of these materials. Utilizing these phenomena in a photorefractive BaTiO3 crystal, optical logic processors such as AND, OR, NOT, etc., are implemented.

  • All mechanical systems have saturation nonlinearity in actuators or in final control elements. When controllers have integral action, reset windup can cause instability as well as make the system performance unsatisfactory. In this study, an intelligent limiter which needs no tuning of parameters is tested with the PDF controller used for control of a second order plant. This paper presents analysis of the stability of the system using the describing function method and the Nyquist stability theorem. The improvement of the system performance by the limiter is illustrated by computer simulations.

  • Closed form solution of nonlinear 2-DEG concentration formula is proposed. This allows us to model continuous 2-DEG charge concentration as the function of gate voltage covering subthreshold region of the I-V curves. Comparisons of the Ids-Vgs characteristics and transconductance with the measured data were performed to show the accuracy of the proposed model. This way we have completely closed form I-V characteristics in subthreshold, triode and saturation region incorporating accurate charge control mechanism for HEMTs.

  • Considering channel length modulation, we proposed a GaAs MESFET model for circuit simulator. In existing M.S. Shur's model, two different models are used according to pinch-off voltage of devices. One model for both type of devices was proposed. In this model we introduced weighted switching function(WSF) based on channel length modulation. This proposed model showed better accuracy comparing with existing single law model and complete velocity saturation model.

  • All mechanical systems have saturation nonlinearity in actuators or in final control elements. When controllers have an integral action, reset windup can cause instability as well as make the system performance unsatisfacdtory. This paper presents an analysis of the stability of the control system with antireset-windup limiter, called intelligent limiter, using the describing function method. The responses of the system with this limiter are illustrated by computer simulation.

  • A non-hepatotoxic dose of dichloromethane (DCM) was examined for potential effects on the hepatotoxicity of carbon tetrachloride (CT) in adult male rats. A concomitant treatment of DCM (0.45ml/kg, po) significantly potentiated the hepatotoxicity of CT at varing doses (0.06 to 0.63 ml/kg, po) as determined by increase in SGOT and SGPT activities 24 hn following the treatments. The carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) saturation induced by DCM was significantly decreased by CT treatments. The potentiation of CT hepatotoxicity by DCM does not appear to be associated with increased metabolism of CT.

  • This paper studies the global stability of a class of discrete-time pathogen infection models with latently infected cells. The rate of pathogens infect the susceptible cells is taken as bilinear, saturation and general. The continuous-time models are discretized by using nonstandard finite difference scheme. The basic and global properties of the models are established. The global stability analysis of the equilibria is performed using Lyapunov method. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical simulations.

  • Iron nitride alloy films prepared in the form of laminated ${(Fe_{97}Al_3)}_{85}N_{15}/Al_2O_3$ multilayers (Ml's) due to excellent soft magnetic properties and high saturation magnetization [1, 2] are very promising materials for poles and shields in ultra high density thin film heads. The present work concerns the ferromagnetic (FM) coupling effect as a function of the thickness of $Al_2O_3$ spacers by analysis of the magnetic domain structure.

  • Background: The international organization for standardization (ISO) 80601-2-61 dictates that the accuracy of a pulse oximeter should be assessed by a controlled desaturation study. We aimed to characterize the relationship between the fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) using a turnover model by retrospectively analyzing the data obtained from previous controlled desaturation studies. Materials and Methods: Each volunteer was placed in a semi-Fowler's position and connected to a breathing circuit to administer the hypoxic gas mixture containing medical air, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. Volunteers were exposed to various levels of induced hypoxia over 70-100% arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). The study period consisted of two rounds of hypoxia and the volunteers were maintained in room air between each round. FiO2 and SpO2 were recorded continuously during the study period. A population pharmacodynamic analysis was performed with the NONMEM VII level 4 (ICON Development Solutions, Ellicott City, MD, USA). Results: In total, 2899 SpO2 data points obtained from 20 volunteers were used to determine the pharmacodynamic characteristics. The pharmacodynamic parameters were as follows: kout = 0.942 1/min, Imax = 0.802, IC50 = 85.3%, γ = 27.3. Conclusion: The changes in SpO2 due to decreases in FiO2 well explained by the turnover model with inhibitory function as a sigmoidal model.
