  • There are 3 cases that only permissive left-turn(PLT) vehicles use the possible lane for PLT. In these cases, left turn and through movements can not be included in the same lane group, hence saturation flow rate and left turn adjustment factor of PLT are obtained separately from through movement. In capacity analysis procedures at signalized intersection with PLT phasing, PLT capacity should be known to discriminate among 3 cases stated above. The capacity is directly used not only to get saturation flow rate and left turn adjustment factor, but as a threshold for the feasibility of PLT control. This study calculated through field data the critical gap and minimum headway of left turn which affect the PLT capacity. The capacity was obtained by using theoretical models, which consequently could be used to calculate the saturation flow rate and left turn adjustment factor.

  • The effect of DC electric fields on the flame extinction was investigated experimentally in counterflow configurations for the methane/oxygen/nitrogen diffusion flame. The electric fields was applied by connecting the high voltage and ground terminals to the upper and lower burners, respectively. In case of having electric fields, several modes of flame extinction was observed according to the electric field intensity and strain rate defined by the exit velocity. To visualize and characterize the flame structure and intensity, planar LIF technique was adopted for OH radicals. Consequently, several length scales, including the flame width, thickness, and height from the burner tip, were introduced to explain the various flame behaviors and to characterize the flame extinctions. It was found that the variation of flame width and the chemical reaction are strongly related to a critical electric field intensity, thus the various modes of diffusion flame extinction could be observed due to the electric fields.

  • Image analysis was performed with two color systems, Red-Green-Blue (RGB) values and normalized Hue-Saturation-Intensity (HSI). We conducted field studies in Cheongju to determine canopy spectral reflectance and digital image analysis of rice. Spectral reflectance measurements made with a portable spectrometer(LI-1800) correlated with growing stage and digital images for rice. Images in which the color was specified by the common RGB coordinates could be used when there was a sharp contrast between the color of the rice and that of the field soil. In the absence of sharp contrast, identification of the rice covered area was much easer after the color had been transformed into HSI coordinates. This study introduced fundamental theories in digital image analysis and applied that for field situations rice.

  • After passing through a magnetic field, the physical quality of water improves, and magnetic water (MW) is produced. There are many investigations on the effects of magnetic field on water that shows MW properties like saturation and memory effect. This study investigates the fresh and hardened properties of concrete mixed with MW, which contains silica fume (SF) and superplasticizer (SP). The test variables included the magnetic field intensity for producing MW (three kinds of water), SF content replaced cement (0 and 10 percent), water-to-cementitious materials ratio (W/CM=0.25, 0.35 and 0.45) and curing time (7, 28 and 90 days). The results of this study show that MW had a positive impact on the workability and compressive strength of concrete. By rising the intensity of the magnetic field which was used for producing MW, its positive influence on both workability and compressive strength improved. MW had greater positive impacts on samples containing SP that did not have SF. Moreover, the best compressive strength improvements of concrete achieved as W/CM ratio decreased.

  • Bilayers of soft NiFe (150 nm-420 nm) on hard Ni (150 nm) were prepared by electrodeposition. The process of magnetization reversal in the NiFe/Ni bilayers was then investigated. The hysteresis loop generated by a magnetization reversal of soft NiFe under a positive saturation state of a hard Ni layer shows a shift along the negative field axis, which is clear evidence for the exchange spring effect in the NiFe/Ni bilayers. The dependence of the coercive field $H_c$ and exchange bias field Hex on the thickness of the NiFe layer was also investigated. As the NiFe thickness increases from 150 nm to 420 nm, both $H_c$ and $H_{ex}$ decrease rapidly from $H_c$= 51.7 Oe and $H_{ex}$ = 12.2 Oe, and saturate to $H_c$ = 5.8 Oe and $H_{ex}$ = 3.5 Oe.

  • By appliying an slternate pulsed magnetic field -generated by using a sequential ignition circuit and a magnet exciting circuit- with peak value of about 10 T to the rod type Nd based magnet Nd2Fe12.7Cr1.3B with length of 5 mm and diameter of 3.6 mm, the basic magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization, residual magnetization, coercivity, maximum energy products, magnetic anisotropy and anisotropic field are investigated with obtaining the major and minor J-H loops of the magnet. The increase in coercivity due to eddy currents in ac measurement of coercivity is calculated considering eddy current loss by analyzing a wave of generating magnetic field. The average coercivity calculated for the magnet is about 12.2 kOe, anisotropy magnetic field and anisotropic constant are measured as 60 kOe 2.43 Mj/$m^3$, respectively.

  • The crystallographic and high frequency characteristics of $Fe_{73.9}Cu_{1.0}Nb_{3.5}Si_{14.0}B_{7.6}$ soft magnetic alloys were investigated under magnetic field annealing, The crystallization fraction of annealed samples with longitudinal magnetic fields is higher than that of samples without magnetic field. When the transverse magnetic field is applied, the crystallization fraction does not increases but decreases until $500^{circ}C$. It is found that for samples, the saturation induction are all same with 1.3 T. The coercive field of as-cast samples is 1.03 A/cm, but in annealed samples it decrease from 0.56 to 0.1A/cm with increasing annealing temperature from 400 to $550^{circ}C$. The squareness of annealed samples under transverse magnetic field has a small value than that of both without field and with longitudinal field annealing. It is noted that the magnetic field annealing with transverse direction to amorphous $Fe_{73.9}Cu_{1.0}Nb_{3.5}Si_{14.0}B_{7.6}$ profoundly influenced on the Mossbauer spectra in contrast to that with longitudinal direction and without magnetic field.

  • In this paper, it is attempted to provide a unified explanation for typical short channel GaAs MESFET’s and SOI-structured Si JFET's behaviors such as: i) drain voltage-induced threshold voltage roll-off, ii) finite output ac resistance beyond the saturation, and iii) weak dependence of the drain saturation current on the channel length. Replacing the conventional GCA with a new assumption that is suggested in order to include the longitudinal field variation, and taking into account the channel current continuity and the field-dependent mobility, we can derive the two-dimensional potential in both depletion region and undepleted conducting channel. Obtained expressions for the threshold voltage and the drain current will be considerably accurate over the entire operating region. Moreover, in comparison with the conventional channel length shortening models, our model seems to be more reasonable in explaining the Early effect.

  • Magnetic and magnetostrictive properties of Tb-Fe and Tb-Fe-B thin films are systematically investigated over a wide composition range from 40.2 to 68.1 at. % Tb. The films were fabricated by rf magnetron sputtering using a composite target which consists of an Fe plate and Tb chips. The microstructure, examined by X-ray diffraction, mainly consists of an amorphous phase and, at high Tb contents, a pure Tb phase also exists. A progressive change in the direction of anisotropy from the perpendicular to in-plane occurs as the Tb content increases and the boundary at which the anisotropy change occurs shifts significantly towards to higher Tb contents with the addition of B. The saturation magnetization exhibits maxima at the Tb contents of 42 and 48 at. % for Tb-Fe and Tb-Fe-B thin films, respectively, and it is decreased by the addition of B. The coercive force, measured in the easy direction, decreases monotonically with the Tb content. Excellent magnetostrictive characteristics, particularly at low magnetic fields, are achieved in both Tb-Fe and Tb-Fe-B thin films; for example, a magnetostriction of 138 ppm is obtained in a Tb-Fe-B thin film at a magnetic field as low as 30 Oe. The excellent magnetostrictive properties of the present thin films are supported by the equally excellent magnetic softness, the coercivity below 10 Oe and a typical squared-loop shape with the saturation field as low as 1 kOe. Due to the excellent low field magnetostrictive characteristics, the present Tb-Fe based thin films are thought to be suitable for Si based microdevices.

  • Magnetic properties and microstructures of the $Co_{83}Cr_{17}$ films growing under the applied magnetic field were studied. In comparison, those of the films growing without magnetic field were also studied. Magnetic field does not affect saturation magnetization and in-plane coercivity of the films. On the contrary perpendicular coercivity and effective perpendicular anisotropy field decreased. Grain size and the thickness of the so-called transition layer were not affected and the C-axis alignment of the films was slightly deteriorated due to magnetic field. Also, microstructures of the sputtered films showed larger grain sizes of strong (002) preferred orientation for thicker film specimens independent of applied magnetic field.
