Ground control points are needed for precision geometric correction of satellite images, and the coordinates of a high-quality ground control point can be obtained from the GPS measurement. However, considering the GPS measurement requires an excessive amount o f t ime a nd e fforts, there is a need for coming up with an alternative solution to replace it. Therefore, we examined the possibility of replacing the existing GPS measurement with coordinates available at online maps to acquire the coordinates of ground control points. To this end, we examined error amounts between the coordinates of ground control points obtained through Daum Map API, and them compared the accuracies between three types of coordinate transformation equations which were used for geometric correction of satellite images. In addition, we used the coordinate transformation equation with the highest accuracy, the coordinates of ground control point obtained through the GPS measurement and those acquired through D aum M ap A PI, and conducted geometric correction on them to compare their accuracy and evaluate their effectiveness. According to the results, the 3rd order polynomial transformation equation showed the highest accuracy among three types of coordinates transformation equations. In the case of using mid-resolution satellite images such as those taken by Landsat-8, it seems that it is possible to use geometrically corrected images that have been obtained after acquiring the coordinates of ground control points through Daum Map API.

This paper proposed the M&S(Modeling & Simulation) method of channel characterization of satellite communication in the operating area of satellite OTM(On-The-Move) terminal. In M&S, received signal profile was acquired by HTZ warfare software which uses 3 dimensional map including building, road information and geographical features, and then was analyzed statistically. And a received signal profile and its statistics from M&S data were compared with those from measured data. The research showed that the simulated received signal profile matched the measured one about 74.8 percent and simulated statistics matched well as roadside trees were excluded.

Construction of the Jangbogo antarctic station was planned, and it requires detailed information on topography of the area around the station. The purpose of this research is to generate the topographic map to construct the Jangbogo antarctic station using the satellite image. To do this, surveying and pre-test of equipment were conducted. In addition, for sensor modeling of the GeoEye-1 satellite image, RPC-bias correction was done, and it showed that at least two control points are required. In generating the map, a 1/2,500 scale was deemed suitable in consideration of resolution of the image and the fact that supplementary topographic surveying would be impossible. In order to provide detailed information on the topography around the Jangbogo station, the digital elevation model based on image matching was created, and compared with GPS-RTK data, accuracy of vertical location about 0.6m was exhibited.

Today's commercial high resolution satellite imagery such as that provided by IKONOS and QuickBird, offers the potential to extract useful spatial information for geographical database construction and GIS applications. Digital maps supply the most generally used GIS data probiding topography, road, and building information. Currently, the building information provided by digital maps is incompletely constructed for GIS applications due to planar position error and warped shape. We focus on extracting of the accurate building information including position, shape, and height to update the building information of the digital maps and GIS database. In this paper, we propose a new method of 3D building information extraction with a single high resolution satellite image and digital map. Co-registration between the QuickBird image and the 1:1,000 digital maps was carried out automatically using the RPC adjustment model and the building layer of the digital map was projected onto the image. The building roof boundaries were detected using the building layer from the digital map based on the satellite azimuth. The building shape could be modified using a snake algorithm. Then we measured the building height and traced the building bottom automatically using triangular vector structure (TVS) hypothesis. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we estimated accuracy of the extracted building information using LiDAR DSM.

Satellite remote sensing images have much more information compared to a paper map. But these images are generally handled as particular image format gained from optical sensor, and must be processed and analyzed by computer with high priced digital image processing system. For the extraction of digital elevation model(DEM) from satellite image, we used the overlay image by SPOT-3 of Chuncheon area at the Kangwon province. According to the image condition, the precious geometric correction, the bundle adjustment for ortho-image generation and the stereo image mapping by several technical approaches were processed. So that we developed the methods of automatic DEM extraction and efficient stereo image map generation which can improve the digital image processing steps. Also, we applied the multiple direction birdeye view image for modeling and analysis using the remotely sensed overlay images with high resolution.

This paper presents a technical method for flood estimation based on satellite rainfall and satellite rainfall correction method for watersheds lacking measurement data. The study area was the Sebou Watershed, Morocco. The Integrated Flood Analysis System(IFAS) and Grid-based Rainfall-Runoff Model(GRM) were applied to estimate watershed runoff. Daily rainfall from ground gauges and satellite-derived hourly data were used. In the runoff simulation using satellite rainfall data, the composites of the daily gauge rainfall and the hourly satellite data were applied. The Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission Digital Elevation Model(SRTM DEM) with a 90m spatial resolution and 1km resolution data from Global map land cover and United States Food and Agriculture Organization(US FAO) Harmonized World Soil Database(HWSD) were used. Underestimated satellite rainfall data were calibrated using ground gauge data. The simulation results using the revised satellite rainfall data were $5,878{\sim}7,434m^3/s$ and $6,140{\sim}7,437m^3/s$ based on the IFAS and GRM, respectively. The peak discharge during flooding of Sebou River Watershed in 2009~2010 was estimated to range from $5,800m^3/s$ to $7,500m^3/s$. The flood estimations from the two hydrologic models using satellite-derived rainfall data were similar. Therefore, the calibration method using satellite rainfall suggested in this study can be applied to estimate the flood discharge of watersheds lacking observational data.
This paper addresses the approach to extract linear features from satellite imagery using an efficient segmentation method. The extraction of linear features from satellite images has been the main concern of many scientists. There is a need to develop a more capable and cost effective method for the Iranian map revision tasks. The conventional approaches for producing, maintaining, and updating GIS map are time consuming and costly process. Hence, this research is intended to investigate how to obtain linear features from SPOT satellite imagery. This was accomplished using a discontinuity-based segmentation technique that encompasses four stages: low level bottom-up, middle level bottom-up, edge thinning and accuracy assessment. The first step is geometric correction and noise removal using suitable operator. The second step includes choosing the appropriate edge detection method, finding its proper threshold and designing the built-up image. The next step is implementing edge thinning method using mathematical morphology technique. Lastly, the geometric accuracy assessment task for feature extraction as well as an assessment for the built-up result has been carried out. Overall, this approach has been applied successfully for linear feature extraction from SPOT image.

MV (Moving Vehicle) detection using satellite imagery is important for traffic monitoring and provides a wide range of observations. Specifically, MV detection methods utilizing the time lag in single-pass optical satellite images have been studied for detecting MVs from a single set of images. Because of limitations in detecting MVs outside of roads, most previous studies required road information to limit the moving object to cars on the road. However, it is difficult to obtain road information from inaccessible areas. Therefore, this study proposed a new method for detecting MVs regardless of their locations from single-pass optical satellite images without using additional data. WV-3 (Worldview-3) satellite images were used, and a spatial correlation coefficient map was proposed to detect spatial displacement which denotes MVs across two WV-3 MS images. Finally, evaluation was performed through quantitative metrics and visual inspection. The evaluation results revealed that the proposed method can detect MV movements from the single-pass satellite images. On the contrary, misdetected or undetected MVs due to radiometric differences between the images could be identified by visual inspection. The performance of the proposed method can be improved by minimizing radiometric variations and adding conditions that are robust to radiometric differences between the images.
Soil erosion by rainfall is important factor for basin management because it reduces reservoir capacity and breaks out the contamination of water caused by turbid water. Recently, soil erosion study with GIS is in progress but does not consider soil erosion source area. This study calculated soil erosion amount using GIS-based soil erosion model in Imha basin and examined soil erosion source area using SPOT 5 High-resolution satellite image and land cover map. As a result of analysis, dry field showed high-density soil erosion area and we could easily investigate source area using satellite image. Also we could examine the suitability of soil erosion area by applying field survey method in common areas such as dry field and orchard area those are difficult to confirm soil erosion source area using satellite image.
