A Study on Analysis Method of Tap-Offs for CATV/DBS/CS by Even.Odd-Mode Theory (CATV/DBS/CS용 신호분기기의 우.기 모드 해석법)

  • A new analysis method was proposed, where the even . odd-mode theory for a symmetrical coupled-line directional coupler was applied to a transformer-type directional coupler. In addition, the tap-offs were analyzed by the proposed theory, which are widely used in CATV (Cable Television), DBS (Direct Broad- casting Satellite), CS (Communication Satellite) systems. By comparing the calculation results to the measured ones using the even . odd-mode reflection coefficients only, the validity of the proposed analysis method was confirmed. Then, the tap-off has been broadened from 5 MHz over 4,000 MHz by adopting the proposed theory.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide an answer for the following question: What are the major shifts and implications of the unprecedently competitive and rapidly changing media ecosystem in the era of N-screen and OTT services? I've attempted to understand the complex and competitive nexus among media from an historical context by focusing on the displacement vs. complement thesis. The TPC model by Han has been employed for the analysis of the current dynamics of US media industries by triangulating three areas: Technology/industry, public policy and consumer/culture. More specifically, the US media landscape is initially divided into two competitive turfs - the competitors equipped with OTT services and the legacy media industry, and then the traditional media industry was grouped again into PayTV group(telecom service providers with IPTV and mobile TV, cable/Satellite TV networks) and Free (over-the-air) TV networks. Six major shifts were identified by the analysis: power shift in telecom carriers, power shifts in TV industry, Telecom/OTT partnership, time shifts, place shifts, and finally business model shifts.

Effects of IT-related Household Demand Characteristics on DTV Adoption: An Empirical Analysis Using Micro Data (가구의 정보통신수용도가 DTV 구매에 미치는 영향 micro data를 이용한 실증연구)

  • This paper empirically analyzes determinants of DTV (Digital Television) adoption in household survey data with IT-related household demand characteristics. To this purpose, we conducted a survey for the adoption of DTV to 1,000 households nationwide. In the questionnaire, various questions asking socio-economics characteristics such as age, education, income were included. Also, status of adoption and usage of IT services such as paid broadcasting, internet, and DVD were asked. To analyze the determinants of intention of purchasing, decision of purchasing, and the timing of purchasing DTV, we adopted the ordered logit, binary logit and multinomial legit models. When there is an order among groups, ordered logit was employed and when there is no orders among groups, multinomial logit was emplyed for the estimation. It is found that when conditions of other explanatory variable are constant, the more educated household heads are, the more probable they become early adopters of DTV. It is also found that other conditions being constant, the income level of households and IT-related household demand characteristics are very important factors affecting DTV adoption. Since the likelihood of purchasing DTV is much higher for those who know the government policy of analog broadcasting termination schedule than others who do not know, dissemination of the Korean government's digital broadcasting policy will affect significantly the adoption of DTV. And policy with various incentives ought to be employed to accelerate DTV adoption, because households with the older TV sets are more likely to purchase DTV. It is suggested that the Korean government should develop policy to connect both DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) and DTV since DBS subscribers are more likely to be an early adopter than non-subscribers.

  • TLM method to analyize receiver gain characteristic of the FZPL antenna which is operated at 12GHz and can be applied to satellite TV system, radio telescope, and Geodetic System. Some numerical results computed by TLM method are compared with Kirchhoff's approximation and PO method. As a result, receiver gain characteristic on main axis of the 12GHz FZPL antenna is shown at the front side, which means that the focal length is 15% shorter than designed focal length.

  • FZPL antenna have been applied for satellite TV receiver system, radio astronomical observation and so on, because of its flat nature and structural simplicity. Using TLM modeling, numerical simulation was performed for the FZPL antenna which ran be applied for DAB/DMB receiver system. FZPL antenna mounted on dielectric substrate was investigated. As the results, the computed focal length was shorter than the designed one and the received gain was 18dB.

Video quality assessment of digital TV for direct broadcasting satellite (직접 위성 방송을 위한 디지틀 TV의 화질 평가)

  • A subjective video quality assessment methods are proposed based on CCIR Rec. 500-5 for an evaluation and testing of compressed video quality and performance of video codec to be designed in accordance with the MPEG-2 MP ML specification which is adapted as a DTV standard for Korea digital DBS. Video sequence compressed in compliance with MPEG-2 MP ML encoding parameterswastested by the proposed video quality evaluation procedure. Test sequence were compressed at the bit rate 6Mbps, 7.5Mbps and 9Mbps, repectively. Test results of the 7.5Mbps bitrate showed a satisfactory picture quality at about 4.0 on the 5.0 absolute scale of ITU-R 500-5.

  • Domestic paid broadcasting market is largely classified into cable TV, satellite broadcasting and IPTV. Latest starter IPTV began its commercial service in 2009 and reached 10 million subscribers in August 2014 after 6 years of service. It has been growing rapidly by increasing more than 500 thousand subscribers every quarter and has taken its place firmly as one of core domestic paid broadcasting platforms, second only to cable TV. Even with this quantitative growth, 3 major IPTV companies are still running deficit, attracting attention to issue of the vitalization of IPTV business based on qualitative growth. This study draws out revitalizing and hindering factors of Korean IPTV industry through a case study on 'A' corporation which is leading domestic IPTV market and exploratory study based on interviews with experts and, by developing influencing factors into Causal Loop Diagram through system dynamics research methodology, draws out core issues in vitalization of domestic IPTV industry and suggests alternatives. Therefore, it is expected that this study will provide more diverse practical implications than preceding studies which drew out one-dimensional issues and alternatives and help vitalize Korean IPTV industry by minimizing negative effects and maximizing positive ones.

  • Satellite Communication is able to send multi-channeld informations simultaneously including television traffic and has a merit which is easly connected to each other among earth stations. Therfore it has a important position as a international telecommunication system. But according to the diversities of telecommunication tn its quantity and quality, there must be introduction new high-capacity communications satellites or new telecommunication systems for a large step forward in international communications. To do so, there must be reexamination or complement in international conventions or regulations related to satellite communication as a basic background.

  • A time comparison technique via Broadcasting Satellie is presented. Experiment has been carried out to compare the time of two atomic clocks in KSRi and RRL, by using Japanese Broadcasting Satellite, BS-2a. The time comparison can be made with an accuracy of 0.1us by simultaneous receiving of line-11 horizontal sync, pulses of TV signal.

  • In this paper, Low Noise Block down converter(LNB) is designed for a Ka-band satellite television receiver only(TVRO) using commercially available MMIC. Designed Low Noise Block down-converter is composed of three stage amplifiers involving input noise matched at first amplification stage, image reject band pass filter, frequency mixer and intermediate frequency amplification. Through LNB Module power budget to obtain gain and attenuation, Optimum LNB devices satisfying Ka-band LNB technical specification are selected. Experimental results of designed Ka-band LNB yields conversion gain of over $58{\pm}1dB$, noise figure of less than 1.5dB and phase noise of -94.6dBc @10KHz.
