  • In this paper, we evaluate the performance of various diversity techniques which can contribute to provide efficient multimedia broadcasting services via hybrid/integrated satellite and terrestrial network. Space-time coding (STC) can achieve the diversity gain in a multi-path environment without additional bandwidth requirement. Recent study results reported that satellite systems can achieve high diversity gains by appropriate utilization of STC and/or forward error correction schemes. Based on these previous study results, we present various cooperative diversity techniques by combining STC and rate compatible turbo codes in order to realize the transmit diversity for the mobile satellite system. The satellite and several terrestrial repeaters operate in unison to send the encoded signals, so that receiver may realize diversity gain. The results demonstrated in this paper can be utilized in future system implementation.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient cooperative diversity scheme for mobile satellite multimedia broadcasting services. The proposed scheme is a transmit diversity technique to adapt time varying channel conditions, and we do not need any channel quality information from the return link. In the proposed scheme, we utilize space-time block coding (STBC) and rate compatible turbo codes in order to realize the transmit diversity for the mobile satellite system with several repeaters. The satellite and several repeaters operate in unison to send the encoded signals, so that the receiver may realize diversity gain. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can provide highly improved performance.

  • The combination of the broadband property and the wide area coverage of satellite communications enables high speed transmission. Every user in the region under the satellite beam coverage can tranceiver and one can simultaneously communicate with multiple users. For these reasons, it is one of commendable telecommunication networks for information transfer. Since the satellite communications use open channels, it is likely to cause jamming with unwanted interference signals. In the thesis, APSK (Amplitude Phase Shift Keying) is employed, which is recommended for DVB-S2 due to high-speed transmission and excellent bandwidth efficiency. For obtaining reliable communication under the jamming environments, the communication satellite transponder rests on the polyphase filter bank structure, which enables switching among the subchannels and gain control on each subchannel, resulting in effectively eliminating jamming. Furthermore, the nulling scheme, one of the various anti-jamming approaches, is investigated, in which unwanted jamming signals are eliminated in the frequency domain after passing through the analysis part of the polyphase filter bank. The performance of the nulling scheme is evaluated for tone jamming and partial band jamming in terms of BER and EVM. The simulation results indicate that the nulling scheme improve the BER and EVM performance over the case without any anti-jamming approach.

  • Due to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) modernization, the recently launched GNSS satellites transmit signals at various frequency bands of L1, L2 and L5. Considering the Korea Positioning System (KPS) signal and other GNSS augmentation signals in the future, there is a high probability of applying more complex communication techniques to the new GNSS signals. For the reason, GNSS receivers based on flexible Software Defined Radio (SDR) concept needs to be developed to evaluate various experimental communication techniques by accessing each signal processing module in detail. In this paper, we introduce a multi-constellation (GPS/Galileo/BeiDou) multi-band (L1/L2/L5) SDR by utilizing Ettus USRP N210. The signal reception module of the developed SDR includes down-conversion, analog-to-digital conversion, signal acquisition, and tracking. The down-conversion module is designed based on the super-heterodyne method fitted for MHz sampling. The signal acquisition module performs PRN code generation and FFT operation and the signal tracking module implements delay/phase/frequency locked loops only by software. In general, it is difficult to sample entire main lobe components of L5 band signals due to their higher chipping rate compared with L1 and L2 band signals. Experiment result shows that it is possible to acquire and track the under-sampled signals by the developed SDR.

  • This paper describes the basic principles of 3D broadcast system and proposes new 3D broadcast technology that reduce the amount of data by applying CS(Compressed Sensing). Differences between Sampling theory and the CS technology concept was described. Recently proposed CS algorithm AMP(Approximate Message Passing) and CoSaMP(Compressive Sampling Matched Pursuit) was described. Image data that compressed and restored by these algorithm was compared. Calculation time of the algorithm having a low complexity is determined.

  • The design of new navigation signals is a key factor in building new satellite navigation systems and/or modernizing existing legacy systems. Navigation signal design involves selecting candidate groups and evaluating and analyzing their signal performances. This process can be easily performed through software simulation especially at the beginning of the development phase. The analytical signal performance analysis software introduced in this study is implemented based on equations between the signal design parameters of Radio Navigation Satellite Service (RNSS) and the navigation signal figures-of-merit (FoMs). Therefore, this study briefly summarizes the RNSS signal design parameters and FoMs before introducing the developed software. After that, we explain the operating sequence of the implemented software including the Graphical User Interface (GUI), and calculate the FoMs of an example scenario to verify the feasibility of the software operations.

  • SAR has pulse compression gain through the process including range and azimuth. Efficient jammers against the SAR with simulated elements are evaluated in the view of power and SAR image. In this paper, J/S is analysed for SAR with RF propagation equation firstly. Several jamming signals on SAR signal are made into SAR image through pulse compression process. Objective jamming performance is evaluated using euclidean distance.

  • While recognizing that Loran-C is very important as a back-up for satellite systems, the introduction of EUROFIX, that it uses Loran-C system, was proposed and admitted at 9th FERNS(Far East Radio Navigation System) Meeting. But, the FERNS countries should consider whether the cost-effectiveness of the system could be improved by making use of its communication facilities to integrate more closely with satellite systems. And, the members were requested to give this proposal consideration before the l0th session of the Council. or this matter, Korea planned to demonstrate transmitting EUROFIX signals from Pohang Loran-C station (Master of 9930 Chain) during the l0th FERNS Meetings. Therefore, this thesis describes the analysis of EUROFIX datalink and progress of EUROFIX construction work. This thesis is the report with regard to the sequence of this demonstration of EUROFIX in Korea.

  • One of the hot issues on GNSS might be that China declared to broadcast the signal of the new Global Navigation Satellite System called Beidou-Compass in December 2011. The multi-GNSS systems with the existing GPS and GLONASS consist of more than 100 GNSS satellites and transmit their signals in near future. Many benefits are expected in accuracy, availability, integrity and increasing anti-jam performance. In this presentation, we have mainly investigated the latest issue for multi- GNSS and discussed spectrum analysis as well as the accuracy improvement issue. The use of the modern weapon system based on satellite navigation information was also briefly investigated in warfare.

  • Coastal upwelling is a significantly imperative process for understanding the interactions between physical and ecological processes and has been investigated incessantly. In this study, we explored the upwelling index, specifically upwelling age (UA). UA enabled us to observe the initiating, sustaining, and decaying upwelling processes. Although the sensitivity of many other geophysical parameters to estimate UA has been investigated, the wind direction has not been evaluated. Thus, we assessed the appropriate wind direction for the UA and obtained efficient upwelling signals from the four coastal stations. Furthermore, we applied the UA and compared it with the satellite sea level anomaly, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll-a changes to validate how UA depicts their spatial extents. Thus, UA can predict the timing of coastal upwelling events using predicted geophysical parameters.
