  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) has jointly developed a bipropellant propulsion system for Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) with EADS Astrium in UK. The technology relevant to a bipropellant propulsion system is quite new one in Korea, which is transferred for the first time, with development of COMS propulsion system. It hasn't ever attempted before, and hasn't got any general idea itself as well, in Korea. The COMS Chemical Propulsion System (CPS) is designed to perform both the orbital injection function, to take the spacecraft from transfer orbit to Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO), and all on-station propulsive functions throughout the lifetime of the satellite. All station keeping manoeuvres are performed using the CPS. The design, manufacture and testing of COMS CPS are addressed in this paper. Feasibility of COMS CPS applicable to the other advanced mission is investigated as well.

A STUDY ON THERMAL MODEL REDUCTION ALGORITHM FOR SATELLITE PANEL (인공위성 패널 열해석모델 간소화 알고리즘 연구)

  • Thermal model reduction algorithms and techniques are introduced to condense a huge satellite panel thermal model into the simplified model on the purpose of calculating the thermal responses of a satellite on orbit. Guyan condensation algorithm with the substitution matrix manipulation is developed and the mathematical procedure is depicted step by step. A block-form LU decomposition method is also invited to compare the developed algorithm. The constructed reduced thermal model induced from the detailed model based on a real satellite panel is satisfying the correlation criterion of ${\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for the validity accuracy. Guyan condensation algorithm is superior to the block-form LU decomposition method on computation time.

  • Electric propulsion is a type of space propulsion with a high specific impulse by accelerating propellant using electrical energy and brings about reduction of the fuel mass and launch costs of satellites so that it is being extensively studied in the world. Electric thrusters are widely used for various purposes from micro satellites to large satellites and from low Earth orbit satellites to spacecraft for exploration. Recently, satellites using full-electric propulsion have been developed, and the number of satellites with electric propulsion is also gradually increasing. In this paper, the current status and trends of research on electric propulsion in the United States, Europe, and Japan will be reported.

  • Chollian is a geostationary satellite, and its bipropellant propulsion system is mainly composed of one main engine for orbit transfer and fourteen thrusters for on-station operations. The Chollian was launched successfully at Kourou Space Center in French Guiana. After it separated from the launcher, the propulsion system was initialised automatically. Then three times of main engine firing were successfully performed, and the target obit insertion was accomplished. This paper details the major CPS events during LEOP phase for the Chollian satellite.

  • Design configuration and performance requirements for KOMPSAT-1 propulsion system were described. Operational results of the propulsion system obtained through the satellite Launch and Early Operation Phase were scrutinized. Performance characteristics of the thrusters which are employed for spacecraft attitude control and the corresponding propellant depletion rate were analysed according to satellite operation modes. Additionally, propellant leakproof and thermal control capability were checked out from the view point of system verification. Propellant depletion rates calculated by PVT method in $\Delta$V maneuvering and each attitude control mode produce the very meaningful results for the prediction of total propellant consumption up to the end of satellite mission life.

  • Electric propulsion systems, including electrothermal, electrostatic, and electromagnetic thrusters, are promising systems for producing thrust from satellites. These systems generally operate under vacuum plasma conditions and exhibit high specific impulses and thrust-to-weight ratios. Despite their high efficiencies, electric propulsion systems are susceptible to performance variations due to physical factors such as plasma instabilities, which require an accurate diagnosis of their status during operation. In this study, we review various measurement systems adopted to diagnose electric propulsion systems operating under vacuum conditions. Specifically, we review electrical, optical, and other methods that can directly or indirectly measure the status of a thruster, with a particular focus on Hall effect thrusters. The system configurations and fundamental mechanisms of the different measurement systems are described based on case studies of the diagnosis of propulsion systems. We anticipate that this study will contribute to the efficient development and safe operation of electric propulsion systems for use in artificial satellites.

  • Many monopropellant thrusters use a catalyst for decompose the propellant, hydrazine. The catalyst directly affects the thruster performances and lifetime. Therefore, it is important to confirm that the catalyst is suitable for our thrusters. Until 2002, we used She1l405 catalyst, for satellite RCS thrusters, and H-IIA and M-V launch vehicle upper-stage RCS thrusters. In 2002, however, Shell Chemical Inc. ceased manufacturing She1l405 catalyst and transferred the product to AEROJET, where it was renamed S405. We subsequently investigated the characteristics of AEROJET's S405 catalyst and SOLVAY's KC12GA catalyst, (SOLVAY is a Belgian chemical company, and KC12GA is used for ASTRIUM's thruster) and conducted thruster firing tests using the new catalysts. After conducting, we confirm that the KC12GA catalyst was suitable for our thrusters, and decided to use KC12GA for two satellite programs.

  • Generally, reaction wheels or thrusters are used for attitude control of a satellite. There is a potential method for the attitude control utilizing the plasma flow on the Low Earth Orbit. In the present study, experiments which simulate attitude control of a Low Earth Orbit Satellite using the ionosphere were conducted. In this experiment, a plasma flow was generated by a steady-state Hall type accelerator. However it is known that the Hall type accelerator, which is used as plasma source, produces a torque around its axis called "swirl torque". This torque would affect the attitude control in the above-mentioned experiments. First of all, we conducted the measurement of the swirl torque. Secondly, experiments using a satellite model with negative electrodes were conducted. The negative electrodes generated torque around the axis, and controlled the attitude of the satellite model by changing the applied voltage.

  • Usual LEO satellite for earth observation use a blowdown hydrazine monopropellant propulsion system for attitude hold and orbit maintenance. For precision control, thruster valve has very short closing time, but this can cause water hammering and pressure surge. Since water hammering and pressure surge can cause damage of propulsion system and ununiform thrust, Thruster valve closing is one of the special concern during satellite propulsion system design. In this paper, an analysis for propellant feed system is conducted using the method of characteristics. The results represent water hammer effect is negligible even at the worst case and pressure surge can be decreased effectively with a trim orifice.
