  • This paper describes link analysis on the processed data, HRIT (High Rate Information Transmission) and LRIT (Low Rate Information Transmission), for the preliminary design of interface between COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) and ground station. At the MODAC (MeteorologicaVOcean Data Application Center), the processed data are transmitted to user station via COMS with normalization and calibration by pre-processing of MI (Meteorological Imager) data. Due to consider satellite as radio relay, overall analysis containing uplink and downlink is needed. Specific link parameters can be obtained with using the outcomes of SRR (System Requirement Review) which was held on 13-14 June 2005, in Toulouse. From the relation between overall link margin and output power of HPA (High Power Amplifier) of MODAC, it is shown that even though the minimum power related with COMS receiving power range is transmitted at MODAC, the obtained link margin of HRIT could be above 3 dB at user station which antenna elevation angle is 10 degree.

  • A preliminary thermal analysis is performed for the optical payload system of a geostationary satellite. The optical payload considered in this paper is GOCI(Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) of COMS of Korea. The radiative and conductive thermal models are employed in order to predict thermal responses of the GOCI on the geostationary orbit. The results of this analysis are as follows: 1) the GOCI instrument thermal control is satisfactory to provide the temperatures for the GOCI performances, 2) the thermal control is defined and interfaces are validated, and 3) the entrance baffle temperature and shutter wheel motor gradient are found slightly out their specification, therefore further detailed analyses should be continued on these elements.

  • Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the Korean Multi-purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) to perform worldwide ocean color monitoring for the study of biological oceanography KOMPSAT will be launched in the middle of November this year. The radiometric performance of OSMI is analyzed for various gain settings in the viewpoint of the instrument developer for OSMI calibration and application based on its ground performance measurement data for 8 primary spectral bands of OSMI. The radiometric response linearity and dynamic range are analyzed for the image radiometric calibration and the estimation of OSMI image quality for the ocean remote sensing area. The dynamic range is compared with the nominal input radiance for the ocean and the land. The noise equivalent radiance (NER) corresponding to the instrument radiometric noise is compared with the radiometric resolution of signal digitization (1-count equivalent radiance). The best gain setting of OSMI for ocean monitoring is recommended. This analysis is considered to be useful for the OSMI mission and operation planning, the OSMI image data calibration, and users' understanding about OSMI image quality.

  • The Communication Ocean, Meteorological Satellite (COMS) as the one of the national space program has been developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARl). The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is one of the main payloads ofCOMS which will provide consistent monitoring of ocean-colour around the Korean Peninsula from geostationary platforms. The ocean color observation from geostationary platform is required to remedy the coverage constraints imposed by polar orbiting platforms. In this paper the main characteristics of GOCI are described and compared with the current ocean color sensors. The GOCI will provide the measurement data of 6 visible channels and 2 nearinfrared channels (40Onm - 900nm). The high radiometric sensitivity is essential of ocean color sensor because of the weak water leaving radiance.

  • COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) shall be operated with two remote sensing payloads, MI (Meteorological Imager) and GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager). Since both payloads have rotating mechanisms, the dynamic coupling between two payloads is very important considering the pointing stability during GOCI operation. In addition, COMS adopts a single solar wing to improve the image quality, which leads to the unbalanced solar pressure torque in COMS. As a result, the off-loading of the wheel momentum needs to be performed regularly (2 times per day). Since the frequent off-loading could affect MI/GOCI imaging performance, another suboptimal off-loading time needs to be considered to meet the AOCS design requirements of COMS while having margin enough in the number of thruster actuations. In this paper, preliminary analysis results on the pointing stability and the wheel off-loading time selection with respect to MI/GOCI operations are presented.

  • Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is under development to provide a monitoring of oceancolor around the Korean Peninsula from geostationary platforms. It is planned to be loaded on Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) of Korea. In this paper radiometric calibration concept of the GOCI is introduced. The GOCI radiometric response is modeled as a nonlinear system in order to reflect a nonlinear characteristic of detector. In this paper estimation approaches for radiometric parameters of GOCI model are discussed. For the GOCI, the offset signal depends on each spectral channel because dark current offset signal is a function of integration time which is different from channel to channel. The offset parameter can be estimated by using offset signal measurements for two integration time setting is described.

  • The ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) to perform worldwide ocean color monitoring f the study of biological oceanography. OSMI performs solar and dark calibrations for on-orbit instrument calibration. The purpose of the solar calibration is to monitor the degradation of imaging performance for each pixel of 6 spectral bands and to correct the degradation effect on OSMI image during the ground station date processing. The design, the operation concept, and the radiometric characteristics of the solar calibration are investigated. A linear model of image response and a solar calibration radiance model are proposed to study the instrument characteristics using the solar calibration data. The performance of spectral responsivity and spatial response uniformity. The first solar calibration data and the analysis results are important references for further study on the on-orbit stability of OSMI response during its lifetime.
