This paper describes the ground system for COMS (Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite), the first Korean multi-purposed geostationary satellite, at MSC (Meteorological Satellite Center) in Korea. The overview of COMS MI (Meteorological Imager) will be introduced as well. KMA would implement mission planning for COMS MI operation and receive, process, interpret, disseminate, and archive MI data operationally for domestic and foreign user groups. Major missions of COMS MI are mitigation of natural hazard such as typhoon, dust storm, and heavy rain, and short-term warning of severe weather to protect human health and commerce. Moreover, research of climate variability and long-term changes will be supported. In accordance with those missions, the concept and design of COMPASS (COMS operation and meteorological products application service system), the ground system for COMS MI in MSC, have been setting up since 2004. Currently, COMPASS design is being progressed and will have finished the end of 2006. The development of COMPASS has three phases: first phase is development of fundamental COMPASS components in 2007, second phase is to integrate and test all of the COMPASS components in 2008, and the last phase is to operate COMPASS after COMS In-Orbit Tests in 2009.

For small earth observation satellites, alignment between the optical components is important for precise observation. However, satellite cameras are structurally subject to misalignment in the launch environment where vibration excitations and impacts apply, and in space environments where zero gravity, vacuum, radiant heat and degassing occur. All of these variables can cause misalignment among the optical components. The misalignment among optical components results in degradation of image quality, and a re-alignment process is needed to compensate for the misalignment. This process of re-alignment between optical components is referred to as a refocusing process. In this paper, we proposed a 3 - axis focusing mechanism to perform the refocusing process. This mechanism is attached to the back of the secondary mirror and consists of three piezoelectric inertia-friction actuators to compensate the x-axis, y-axis tilt, and de-space through three-axis motion. The fabricated focus mechanism demonstrated excellent servo performance by experimenting with PD servo control.

This study introduces about the analysis, verification and implementation of Digital Communication Satellite transponder. Through the pre-performance analysis of each component by the circuit level simulation, each component's performance was checked whether satisfying the specifications. When each of the components was connected in order, System's performances were evaluated through system harmonic balanced simulation whether satisfying the specifications. Through pre-analysis of the system performance, specification of each component was defined. On the basis of that specification, Components which comprise the Digital Communication Satellite repeater were manufactured, and finally, the overall system performance check was made by integrating the components of Digital Communication Satellite transponder.
Satellite image processing software should be able to support interoperability that is to enable consumers, citizens, large and small businesses and governments to make the fullest possible use of the world's spatial data and spatial processing resources. The goal of interoperability is to perform hands-on research, development, testing, fielding, and validation of potential and existing interoperable geoprocessing technologies. In this paper, component based architecture for fast interoperability is designed to maximize interoperability among the OpenGIS components specified in the OpenGIS abstract specifications and implementation specifications and to mix up the OpenGIS components and the fast access mechanism for high performance.
Change detection technology, which discovers the change information on the surface of the earth by comparing and analyzing multi-temporal satellite images, can be usefully applied to the various fields, such as environmental inspection, urban planning, forest policy, updating of geographical information and the military usage. In this paper, we introduce a change detection system that can extract and analyze change elements from high-resolution satellite imagery as well as low- or middle-resolution satellite imagery. The developed system provides not only 7 pixelbased methods that can be used to detect change from low- or middle-resolution satellite images but also a float window concept that can be used in manual change detection from highresolution satellite images. This system enables fast access to the very large image, because it is constituted by OGC grid coverage components. Also new change detection algorithms can be easily added into this system if once they are made into grid coverage components.
COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and has been developing by KARI for communication and ocean and meteorological observations. It will be launched by ARIANE 5. Ka-band components are installed on South panel, where single solar array wing is mounted. Radiators, embedded heat pipes, external heat pipe, insulation blankets and heaters are utilized for the thermal control of the satellite. The Ka-band payload section is divided several areas based on unit operating temperature in order to optimize radiator area and maximize heat rejection capability. Other equipment for sensors and bus are installed on North panel. The ocean and meteorological sensors are installed on optical benches on the top floor to decouple thermally from the satellite. During the transfer orbit operation, satellite will be under severe thermal environments due to low dissipation of components, satellite attitudes and LAE(Liquid Apogee Engine) firing. This paper presents temperature and heater power prediction and validation of thermal control design during transfer orbit operation.

Thermal design fur satellite propulsion system has been performed. Overall design requirements and the constitution for propulsion system is described. To meet the thermal design requirements, both a primary and a redundant heater circuit, each with two thermostats placed in series, will protect each hydrazine-wetted components, even if one heater circuit fails to operate. Heater power is turned off if any one of these thermostats is opened at its higher setpoint. Thus, even if one thermostat is failed closed, the second thermostat will turn off the heater. All such components shall be insulated with MLI. Propulsion heater sizing based on the constant worst cold case condition is conducted through thermal analysis. All heaters selected fur propulsion components operate to prevent propellant freezing satisfying the thermal requirements for the propulsion subsystem over the worst case average voltage, i.e. 25 volts.
A satellite power system should generate and supply sufficient electric power to perform the satellite mission successfully during the satellite mission period, and it should be developed to be strong to the failure caused by the severe space environment. A satellite power system must have a high reliability with respect to failure. Since it cannot be repaired after launching, different from a ground system, the failures that may happen in space as well as the effect of the failures on the system should be considered in advance. However, it is difficult to use all the hardware to test the performance of the satellite power system to be developed in order to consider the failure mechanism of the electrical power system. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an accurate model for the main components of a power system and, based on that, to develop an accurate model for the entire power system. Through the power system modeling, the overall effect of failure on the main components of the power system can be considered and the protective design can be devised against the failure. In this study, to analyze the failure mode of the power system and the effects of the failure on the power system, we carried out modeling of the main power system components including the solar array regulator, and constituted the entire power system based on the modeling. Additionally, we investigated the effects of representative failures in the solar array regulator on the power system using the power system model.

The impulse between launch vehicle and atmosphere can generate a lot of noise and vibration during the process of launching a satellite. Structurally, electronic equipment (KOMPSAT 2, RDU : Remote Drive Unit) of a satellite consists of aluminum case containing PCB (Printed circuit boards). Each PCB has resistors and IC (Integrated circuits). Noise and vibration of wide frequency band are transferred to the inside of fairing, subsequently creating vibration of the electronic equipment of the satellite. In this situation. random vibration can cause malfunctioning of the electronic equipment of the device. Furthermore, when tile frequency of random vibration meets with natural frequency of PCB. fatigue fracture nay occur in the part of solder joint. The launching environment, thus. needs to be carefully considered when designing the electronic equipment of a satellite. In general. the safety of the electronic equipment is supposed to be related to the natural frequency, shapes of mode and dynamic deflection of PCB in the electronic equipment. Structural vibration analysis of PCB and its electronic components can be performed using either FEM(Finite Element Method) or vibration test. In this study. the natural frequency and dynamic deflection of PCB are measured by FEM, aud the safety of the electronic components of PCB is being evaluated according to the results. This study presents a unique method for finite element modeling and analysis of PCB and its electronic components. The results of FEA are verified by vibration test. The method proposed herein may be applicable to various designs from the electronic equipments of a satellite to home electronics.

The optimal layout design is used in the development of various areas of industry. In the field of space systems, components must be placed properly in the limited space of spacecraft by considering mechanical, thermal and electrical interfaces. When applying optimal layout design, a proper, even ideal placement of components is possible in the limited space of a satellite platform. Through the optimal placement design, the minimized moment of inertia enhances efficient attitude control, rapid maneuver and mission performance of the satellite. This paper proposes 3D optimal layout design that minimizes the spacecraft's moment of inertia and effect of thermal dissipation between inner components as well as interference between inner components based on a cubic-structure satellite platform. This study proposes the new genetic algorithm for 3D optimal layout design of the satellite platform.
