  • The electrical design of the Ka-band antenna for the domestic Communications and Broadcasting Satellite (CBS) is described. The antenna has the offset Gregorian structure and is installed on the Earth-facing panel of the satellite. The electrical performance specifications for the antenna were determined from the required EIRP and G/T through the payload level performance analysis. This paper utilized the reflector shaping technology for the trade-off among the major performance parameters, resulting in compliance of all the parameters. The designed antenna shows 37.95 dBi EOC (End of Coverage) gain and 28.7 dB sidelobe isolation for transmit band, and 37.49 dBi EOC gain and 31.1 dB sidelobe isolation for receive band, The electrical performances of the antenna have been verified via the electrical testing of a manufactured EQM (Engineering Qualification Model) antenna.

  • Dual-polarization means to use two orthogonal polarizations, namely two independent channels in communication. This can be used to deal with high datarate caused by large amount of observed data in future LEO satellite. However, when two orthogonal polarizations are not perfectly independent to each other in practical, interference is probably raised in each channel, meaning that noise level in passband increases. XPD (Cross-Polarization Discrimination) is the ratio of the signal level at the output of a receiving antenna that is nominally co-polarized to the transmitting antenna to the output of a receiving antenna of the same gain but nominally orthogonal polarized to the transmitting antenna. In this paper, the influence of XPD on the communication between satellite and ground station was analyzed under the assumption that X-Band dual-polarization was applied to KOMPSAT-2 (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2). Through analysis, it was shown that more than 3dB of link margin was still achievable despite of worst axial ratio, 2.5dB, at ground station antenna when axial ratio of satellite antenna was about 0.5dB under 99% of environmental availability.

  • A LEO satellite transmits recorded images to a ground station using an X-band antenna during contact. The X-band antenna points to the ground station according to a TPF (tracking parameter file) during communication time. A TPF generation software generates azimuth and elevation profile which make the antenna point to the ground station using satellite orbit and attitude information and mission information including recording and downlink operation. When the satellite passes above the ground station, azimuth velocity increases rapidly so that jitter may occur if the azimuth velocity is in specific range. In case of realtime mission in which the satellite perform recording and downlink simultaneously, azimuth velocity must be lower than specific value to prevent image blur due to jitter effect. The method to point one virtual ground station has limitation of azimuth velocity reduction. In this paper, we propose the azimuth fixing method to reduce azimuth velocity of X-band antenna. The experimental results show that azimuth velocity of the X-band antenna is remarkably reduced using proposed method.

  • It is not entirely new tendency now that museum have to become 'participation and working activity style' in 21st century. A lot of museums are changed fast to that visitors participate and work actively in museum program recently in Korea. Cheongju city is building various museums which have interesting themes contributed precious inheritances and collections belong to citizens. And Cheongju city is pushing ahead long-term target which is Ecomuseum City Cheongju with citizen is progressing for cultural city continuously. Also to become public museums and facilities which visitors want to come again, Cheongju city is trying to secure various experience space and facilities to keep in step in trend that visitors take part in and work actively in museum program. In an area, there are various cultural, historical, natural and industrial heritages that express relation of human and environment. In meaning that do function of antenna of sending culture which understanding, studying, informing these regional inheritances and promoting activity, in Ecomuseum, those are called "satellite" included not only regional preserved inheritances but also various theme museums which have mutual cooperative function. Satellite(or antenna) is very important element composing Ecomuseum. So I want to provide that is "Exhibition Working-Activity Satellite" that are places having experience space or facilities which visitors can work actively there like that. Such study for Ecomuseum and Exhibition Working-Activity Satellite can be promoted Ecomuseum City which is city for learning lifetime with citizens.

  • In this paper, we have proposed dual-band Phi-shaped slot gap filler antenna for satellite internet service applications. Some properties of the antenna such as return loss, radiation pattern, and gain have been simulated and measured. The proposed antenna has a Phi-shaped slot on the circular patch and is fabricated on the TLX-9 substrate. The radius of the circular patch is 25 mm, and it has a coaxial feeding structure. The dual-band Phi-shaped slot gap filler antenna has high-gain, small-size, simple-structure, and good radiation patterns at each band. The operating frequency band can be tuned by adjusting the length AL and FL of the Phi-shaped slot.

  • Helix antennas have been widely applied to satellite TT&C, data communication and GPS receiver systems onboard military, remote sensing and communication purpose satellites. The helix antennas are known to be convenient to control impedance and radiation coverage characteristics with a maximum directivity in satellite z-axis. Waveguide horn is commonly used for radar system that needs ultra-wideband pulse for exploration ground radar and electromagnetic disability measurement etc. It has high efficiency and low reflection characteristics provided by the low-profile shape and suppressed radiation distortion. In this paper, a waveguide horn structure incorporated with helix antenna design is proposed for satellite applications that require ultra-wideband pulse radar and high rate RF data communication link to ground station over wide coverage area. The main design concern is to synthesize variable beam forming pattern based on modified horn-helix combination helicone structure such that multi-mission antenna is implemented applicable for TT&C, earth observation, high data rate transmission. Waveguide horn helps to reduce the overall antenna structure size by introduction fold type reflector connected to the tapered helix antenna. The next generation KOMPSAT satellite currently under development requires high-performance precision attitude control system. We present an initial design of a hybrid hern-helix antenna structure suitable for efficient RF communication module design of multi-purpose satellite systems.

  • As more satellites are designed to downlink their observed image data through the X-band frequency band, it is inevitable that the occupied bandwidth of a target satellite will overlap with that of other X-band downlink satellites. For sun-synchronized low earth orbit satellites, in particular, it can be expected that two or more satellites be placed within the looking angle of a ground station antenna at the same time. Due to the overlapping in the frequency band, signals transmitted from the adjacent satellites act as interferers, leading to degraded link performance between target satellite and ground station. In this paper, link analysis was initiated by modeling the radiation pattern of ground station antenna through a validated Jet Propulsion Laboratory peak envelope model. From the relative antenna gain depending on the offset angle from center axis of maximum antenna directivity, the ratio of received interference signal level to the target signal level was calculated. As a result, it was found that the degradation increased when the offset angle was within the first point of radiation pattern. For a 7.3 m antenna, serious link degradation began at an offset angle of 0.4 degrees. From this analysis, the link performance of the coming satellite passes can be recognized, which is helpful to establish an operating procedure that will prevent the ground station from receiving corrupted image data in the event of a degraded link.

  • This paper presents the applicability of MIMO joint decoding to dual-contact satellite systems in which two LEO satellites using X-band frequency band are transmitting each image data to two ground station antennas, simultaneously. When two satellites are closely positioned within the looking angle of the two antennas, each satellite interferes with each other by the relative antenna gain corresponding to an offset angle and this might cause the performance degradation without interference mitigation. To mitigate the performance degradation, SM MIMO techniques for joint decoding are applied. Especially, the relative antenna gain of ground station depending on the angle difference between two satellites in ground station antenna plays an important role in modelling the dual-contact satellite systems. The condition number of MIMO channel including the antenna gain calculated from the mathematical gain pattern model was primarily analyzed. Simulation results showed that the SM MIMO techniques using detection schemes such as ZF-SIC, MMSE-SIC, and ML can be applicable to dual-contact satellite systems.

  • To construct the accurate radio satellite navigation system, the efficient communication each satellite with the ground station is very important. Throughout the communication, the orbit of each satellite can be corrected, and those information will be used to analyze the satellite satus by the operator. Since there are limited resources of ground station, the schedule of antenna's azimuth and elevation angle should be optimized. On the other hand, the satellite in the medium earth orbit does not pass the same point of the earth surface due to the rotation of the earth. Therefore, the antenna pass schedule must be updated at the proper moment. In this study, Q learning approach which is a form of model-free reinforcement learning and genetic algorithm are considered to find the optimal antenna schedule. To verify the optimality of the solution, numerical simulations are conducted.

  • In this paper, I design a linear array antenna simulator for anti-jamming GPS systems and perform various performance analysis by simulation. First, I generate simulated transmission signals through the analysis of GPS satellite signal structure, and analyze SNR(Signal to Noise power Ratio) performance of linear array antenna according to number of arrays under noise environments. In addition, I analyze the performance of the anti-jamming beam pattern using MMSE(Minimum Mean Square Error) signal processing method, and also analyze the anti-jamming performance considering antenna calibration problem when there are different delays between arrays.
