1. Objectives The risk for cardiovascular diseases increases significantly when multiple risk factors exist, as in the form of metabolic syndrome, compared to a single risk factor. This study was to assess the prevalence rate of metabolic syndrome and evaluate the factors associated with metabolic syndrome and Sasang Constitutional Types. 2. Methods 666 subjects(280 men and 386 women), more 40 years old, in a rural community study were examined in point of Sasang Constitution and metabolic syndrome. 3. Results 1) Their Constitutional distribution were Taeeumin 436 persons (65.5%), Soyangin 83 persons (12.5%), Soeumin 147 persons (22.1%) and no Taeyangin diagnosed by PSSC. 2) Body weight, BMI, waist circumstance and hip circumstance were significantly high in Taeeumin group like previous study results. 3) Prevalence rate of metabolic syndrome was 32.0%, especially 27.1% in men and significantly higher as 35.5% in women than men. 4) In men, prevalence rate of metabolic syndrome was 1.4% in Soyangin, 2.9% in Soeumin and significantly high as 22.9% in Taeeumin. 5) In women, prevalence rate of metabolic syndrome was 12.5% in Soyangin, 3.6% in Soeumin and significantly high as 47.6% in Taeeumin. 6) Hazard ratios for metabolic syndrome were 1.14 for women to men, 2.34 for those at the age of 60s to 40s, 1.95 for Soyangin to Soeumin and 3.39 for Taeeumin to Soeumin. 4. Conclusions Sasang Constitutional Type may be an significant risk factor for metabolic syndrome and regimen according to Sasang Constitutional Type is thought to be needed to prevent metabolic syndrome.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the ordinary symptoms, special symptoms and Body Mass Index (BMI) according to Sasang constitution in female college students. Also, we aimed to analyze the factors affecting BMI. Methods Forty-four female college students participated in this study. Sasang Constitution was determined by Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification (QSCC) II. BMI was measured and ordinary symptoms were acqired through the questionnaire. Special symptoms was determined by Fatigue Severity Index (FSS), Premenstrual Symptom Screening Tool (PSST), ROME III, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), respectively. For statistical analysis, t-test, analysis of variance and correlation test has been used. Results There existed significant differences in ordinary symptoms and special symptoms between sasang constitutions. Taeumin had higher urine frequency than soyangin, soeumin had higher gap of feces than taeumin. Taeumin had higher BMI and ROME III score than soyangin and soeumin. They showed significant differences in ordinary symptoms and special symptoms according to BMI. Overweight and obese group is higher in water intake than low and normal group. Low weight and normal group is higher in gap of feces than overweight and obese group. High score group in PSST and ROME III showed high BMI than low score group. We analyzed the factors that affect BMI. BMI are highly correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, FSS, PSST, ROME III and OSDI showed high correlation with each other. Conclusion Urine frequency and gap of feces are different among sasang constitutional types. The obese group and normal group showed significant differences in water intake, gap of feces, PSST and ROME III score. It is found that factors that affecting BMI are systolic and diastolic blood pressure. These results may lead to identifying the causes and factors of obesity in female college students related to Sasang constitution.
Objectives : We identified the applicability of Sasang constitution for the enhancement of job satisfaction, job performance and organizational commitment in office workers. Methods : We conducted a survey using a Sasang constitution questionnaire to identify the Sasang types, and several questionnaires to identify organizational commitment, job performance and job satisfaction of 205 office workers who live in D city. Data were analyzed with ANOVA test. Results 1. In organizational commitment, Sasang constitution showed a significant correlation in the question of "I feel that I am not a real member of this company" and the order of score was Soeumin, Taeeumin, and Soyangin. 2. In job performance, Sasang constitution showed significant correlations in the questions of "I always achieve my goals" and "I am recognized as a person who has a good job performance" and the order of score was Soeumin, Taeeumin, and Soyangin. 3. In job satisfaction, Sasang constitution showed a significant correlation in the questions of "I am forced to go to the office" and the order of score was Soeumin, Soyangin, and Taeeumin. Sasang constitution also showed significant correlations in the questions of "I am usually passionated in my work", and "I was disappointed when I got at my job" and the order of score was Soeumin, Taeeumin, and Soyangin. Conclusions : Sasang constitution. had significant correlation in organizational commitment, job performance and job satisfaction in office workers.
This study was to examine the neuroticism related to psychological characteristics of each Sasang types using SCL-90-R with 107 students from College of Oriental Medicine, Daeguhaani University. We did ANOVA analysis with seven neuroticism-related sub-scales and found significant differences in somatization (F=3.701, p=0.028) and hostility (F=4.396, p=0.015). The post-hoc analysis showed that the So-Yang type ($23.17{\pm}8.95$) has significantly (p=0.048, p=0.012) higher score than Tae-Eum ($19.25{\pm}5.97$) and So-Yang($19.25{\pm}5.76$) type in somatization. In hostility, the So-yang type ($11.31{\pm}3.98$) has significantly (p=0.011, p=0.015) higher score than Tae-Eum ($8.80{\pm}2.61$) and So-Eum ($9.44{\pm}3.35$) type. The ANOVA analysis with female subjects found significant differences in anxiety (F=3.88, p=0.03) and hostility (F=5.04, p=0.01). The post-hoc analysis showed that the So-Yang type ($20.36{\pm}5.44$, $12.36{\pm}3.82$) has significantly (p=0.043, p=0.015) higher score compared to the So-Eum type ($15.46{\pm}3.36$, $8.69{\pm}2.06$) in anxiety and hostility. The profile analysis using seven neuroticism-related subscalesof SCL-90-R did not revealed significant differences (Flatness with Greenhouse-Geisser (F=202.347, p=0.0001), Parallelism with Greenhouse-Geisser (F=1.428, p=0.191)). We discussed the implications of neuroticism in Sasang typology and SCL-90-R somatization, anxiety and hostility scales. This study showed opposite results compared to the previous studies that So-Eum type has higher neuroticism compared to the So-Yang and Tae-Eum type. The reason for this discrepancy between this and previous studies, and differences between male and female should be examined thoroughly with larger and balanced sample.
Background According to the Sasang constitutional medicine, eating habits according to the characteristics of Sasang Constitution (SC) types affect management of chronic diseases and health conditions. The aim of this study is to identify the association between eating habits, such as breakfast, eating frequency, and energy intake, according to SC, and quality of life. Method This study is a cross-sectional study of people aged 33 to 55 years, sampled by stratification based on population distribution. The SC types were classified into Taeeumin (TE), Soeumin (SE), and Soyangin (SY) using a structured questionnaire (KS-15). Items examined regarding eating habits were whether the subjects had breakfast; the frequency of eating such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and after-dinner snacks; and energy intake surveyed using a food frequency questionnaire. As for quality of life, SF-12, which is widely used worldwide to assess health conditions, was utilized. A regression analysis was conducted on the relations between eating habits according to SC and quality of life. Results The SC distribution of the 3,895 subjects was 47% for TE, 22% for SE, and 31% for SY. The scores indicating quality of life differed for TE and SY depending on whether they ate breakfast and eating frequency groups, and those of SE varied depending on levels of energy intake. A regression analysis having adjusted all covariates demonstrated for TE a positive relation between the eating frequency of three times per day or more (compared to 1.5 to 3 meals per day) and quality of life (B=1.365, p<0.001). For SE, there was a negative association between low energy intake (compared to adequate energy intake) and quality of life (B=-1.642, p=0.004). Meanwhile, no relation was found between eating habits and quality of life for SY. Conclusion This study identified the association between eating habits according to SC types and quality of life. For TE, it was found to be important to eat evenly dispersed adequate amounts as opposed to overeating or binging at once. For SE, adequate energy intake affected good quality of life. This study suggests that eating habits based on SC improve quality of life, and health management customized for each constitution should be performed in the future through proper eating habits.
Presently Sasang constitutional medicine draws public attention and a diet based on this theory in gaining popularity. However, scientific data are not available to probe the effects of constitutional diet and the correlations between constitution and food consumptions. Thiry-four healthy subjects[26 females and 8 males] with Tae-eum(females: 5, males: 7), So-yang(females: 9)and So-eum(females: 12, males: 1), were studied. Subjects were not told the kind of constitutional diets they were consuming. Tae-eum constitutional diet was given to all subjects more than 2 meals a day for 8 weeks. The Sasang constitutional classification, food frequency questionnaire and food habits were assessed. The anthropometric assessment, dietary assessment, health status assessment and blood analysis were carried out before and after taking the Tae-eum constitution diet. In case of females, the body weights and BMI were different among the constitutional groups in the following order : Tae-eum constitutional diet. In case of females, the body weights the body weights and BMI were different among the constitutional groups in the following order: Tae-eum>So-yang>So-eum. In case of males, the body weights and BMI of Tae-eum were significantly higher than those of So-eum. In general, habitual food consumption of all of these four groups were very close to those for each of Sasang constitutional types described by Sasang medicine. After 8-weeks of Tae-eum diet, the health status and blood biochemical parameters were not significantly changed.
Objectives This study was to identify the types of errors in the statistical analysis and trends of previous reported papers that used various statistical techniques. Methods We have selected 118 original articles for statistical review from the OASIS(http://oasis.kiom.re.kr) and the Pubmed(http://www.pubmed.gov) in the field of Sasang constitutional medicine. Published year was restricted from 2011 to 2015.Results 1. The ANOVA(25.72%) was the statistic of choice overall, followed by the chi-square test(21.74%), regression analysis(14.13%), t-test(11.59%), and etc. 2. By examining the errors of the statistical methods, there were 42(59.2%) thesis with errors among 71 thesis using ANOVA, 19(31.7%) thesis among 60 thesis using chi-square test, and 35(89.7%) over 39 thesis using regression analysis. Conclusions To improve the quality of Sasang Constitution, the participation of statisticians in research design will reduce the significant errors in statistical interpretation of the results.
An outcome-based curriculum or competency-based curriculum is regarded to be one of the mainstream curricula to make students centered. It is believed to be able to support a flexible, time-independent curriculum. However, it is not easy for the curriculum developers to convert from the traditional curriculum to an competency-based curriculum. Traditional medicines including Sasang constitutional medicine(SCM) have been on the verge of transforming their curricula. Considering the contents of the clinical skills in terms of an outcome-based curriculum in SCM, at least five categories needs to be covered. First, curriculum developers need to consider the understanding of relevant diseases concerning SCM although SCM could be used as the method to treat all kinds of diseases. Second, curriculum developers facilitate the students to diagnose patients' SCM types. Third, curriculum developers conduct the establishment of competencies to understand the patterns of SCM symptomology. Fourth, curriculum developers develop the diverse treatment methods and procedures to make students participate. Fifth, curriculum developers make students teach and consult their patients in terms of SCM regimen. Development of the clinical skill contents in detail depends on the situation of each colleges. Competency-based medical curriculum in SCM could influence on the management of the curriculum quality.
1. Objectives : There are many studies on the ordinary symptoms based on Sasang constitution. But there are not quite satisfactory between the types of Sasang constitution. So This study is for learning the characteristics of ordinary symptoms depending on Taeyangin Soyangin(the rest Yangin) and Taeumin Soeumin(the rest Eumin) of the Sasang constitution. 2. Methods : We classified them into the each type of Sasang Constitutional Medicine(SCM) by the well-trained SCM specialist, and assessed their ordinary features by the questionnaire. Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to evaluate the influence of ordinary features to the diagnosis of SCM. 3. Results : There are a result of the binary logistic analysis on the observed questionnaire. 1) Regarding sleeping, Yangin do not dream much as Eumin do when they sleep. The time they are sleeping is not longer, and they usually do not sleep well. 2) Regarding stools, Yangin go to stool more than Eumin do. The constipation does not occur when they are not in a good condition, and they do not feel uncomfortable when they do not go to stool for a day. The length of time taken for emptying the bowels is much longer, and the hardness of their stools is much more, but the hardness does not mean that they have the constipation. 3) Regarding urine, Yangin have much more foam than Eumin. 4. Conclusions: We found that Yangin and Eumin have characteristics of ordinary symptoms, but partly there are not in accordance with ones what Lee Je-ma said in his book. So in future we hope clinical studies are required steadily.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate intervention studies on Sasang Constitutional diet (SCD) through the checks of Participant, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome (PICO) Methods Randomized controlled trial (RCT) and non-randomized study for intervention (NRSI) about SCD were searched in 4 Korean core databases and other sources, and then PICO was checked. Results 1. Total 10 studies were conducted with 1 RCT and 9 NRSIs. 2. Participants were people with no specific disease, or patients with essential hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity, or stroke with diabetes or hyperlipidemia. Most studies were conducted on groups of various Sasang Constitutional types except Taeyangin. 3. Two studies provided participants with meals and exercise. Three studies, instead of providing meals directly, taught participants how to eat SCD on their own. 4. NRSIs have tested the effectiveness of various outcome measures without the presentation of primary outcome, and then concluded that all outcomes were ineffective or some are effective. 5. There was no mention of adverse events. In most studies, a single doctor of Korean medicine diagnosed Sasang Constitution the QSCC II questionnaire. The intervention period ranged from three weeks to three months, and recent studies have conducted interventions for 12 weeks. Conclusions Intervention studies about SCD which were conducted so far have shown problems on the study design of PICO items. The study design and implementation that carefully consider how to maintain similarity between groups, minimize the risk of bias, set primary outcome measure, and control the diet are required.
