  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to identify the research trends and major fields of Sasang Constitutional Medicine by analyzing the topics of papers contained in the Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine from the first issue to 2018. Methods To classify the research themes of the paper, theory, Characteristics in Sasang Constitution(SC), Diagnosis in SC, Treatment in SC, etc. categories and subcategories were created. Two researchers reviewed the title, abstract, and text of the paper and classified them according to the category classification. In case of disagreement, the category was determined through discussion with one of the remaining researchers. Results & Conclusions A total of 1,169 papers published in the Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine from the first issue to 2018. The number of published papers has increased steadily since the first issue of the Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, and in 2008, the largest number of papers were published, but since then, the number of papers has gradually decreased. When classifying the categories of published papers according to research themes, the Theory field occupied a large portion in the early stages, but since then, the proportion has decreased steadily, and the number of publications has plummeted since 2012. On the other hand, in Treatment in SC field, its proportion has soared to account for about half of the papers since 2001. In Characteristics in SC and Diagnosis in SC fields, since the early 1990s, the number of publications has been consistently maintained.

  • Objectives : As there was no sufficient research done on Sasang (four harms: 氣[qi], 血[blood], 痰[phlegm], and 鬱[congestion]), which serves as a precept in treatment of miscellaneous diseases, in contrast with 'Yang is always teeming whereas Yin is always scarce' and 'Sanghwa-ron', which are Judangye's major theories, I have come to work on it. I expect that with this, we can understand Judangye's medical theory and therapy for a variety of diseases. Methods : To begin with, I take a look at the definition of Sasang. And then, I make selections of theories and therapy related to Sasang from Gyeokchiyeoron(格致餘論) and Geumgweguhyeon(金匱鉤玄), which are Judangye's writings. My study follows the order of energy, blood, phlegm, and congestion. Results : Through Gyeokchiyeoron, I have learned more about Judangye's theory on how energy, blood, phlegm, and congestion cause diseases. And as for therapy, I have tapped into Geumgweguhyeon to use sagunja-tang(四君子湯) for drained energy, samul-tang(四物湯) for drained blood, ijin-tang(二陳湯) for phlegm, and wolguk-hwan(越鞠丸) for congestion, thus verifying the originality of Judangye's theory. Conclusions : "Judangye for miscellaneous diseases" was confirmed through his treatments for energy, blood, phlegm, and congestion. And his idea of Yang-eum(養陰 'nurturing yin') is now reflected in therapy for miscellaneous diseases, now serving as a study that provides a comprehensive understanding of Judangye's medical theories.

  • Objective : This study was conducted to compare Sasang Constitutional Medicine (SCM) and Four Humor Theory (FHT). Method : 1. The theoretical comparison was focused on the central pillars of both theories, i.e., the theories of Hippocrates and his successor Galenos as well as Lee Je-ma. 2. Research papers on SCM and FHT were collected as follows. First, relevant papers were searched for using several electronic databases: Pubmed (http://www.pubmed.org.), NDSL (http://www.ndsl.kr/index.do), KISS (http://kiss.ksstudy.com), and RISS (http://www.riss4u.net.). Keywords were 'Sasang', 'constitution', 'constitutional medicine', 'humor theory', 'Hippokrates', 'Galenos', and "Dongeuisusebowon".In addition, relevant papers were searched for using the websites of The Korean Society for the History of Medicine(http://medhist.kams.or.kr), The Korean society of Oriental medical classics (http://www.wonjeon.or.kr), The Society of Sasang Constitutional Medicine (http://www.esasang.or.kr/new_home/main.htm),and The Korean Association of Oriental Medical Physiology (http://www.ksomp.or.kr). As a result, a total of 32 papers were included in the final selection. Result & Conclusion : In this study, a comparison was made between FHT and SCM in terms of physiology, pathology and therapy. We showedthat the theories share similarities as well as differences. However, in a practical sense, the two should be characterized based on their differences rather than their similarities. In conclusion, the two have something in common, but overall, they are remarkably different from each other.

  • 1. Objectives This study was purposed to find Dong's thoughts about the eight items of the "The Great Learning(Ta hsueh)" 2. Methods It was researched through comparative and overall study on the Dong-mu's thoughts in "Gyukchigo(格致藁)" 3. Results (1) Dongmu reinterpreted the eight items of the "The Great Learning(Ta hsueh)" as the relations between the subject and the object from the ontologic assumption of Affairs Mind Body Objects as the principle of existence and correlation, summarized into four categories, and classified into the individual and subjective affairs, and the universal and objective affairs. The four categories of the eight items of the "The Great Learning(Ta hsueh)" are correlated with the individual and the universal ethics of behavior, and connected with the element for overcoming the individual inclination of mind and wickedness. (2) After the individual and subjective human was established, the eight items of the "The Great Learning(Ta hsueh)" were classified into two categories, and coupled up with each two items('Being sincere in their thoughts' with 'Extending to the utmost their knowledge', 'Rectifying their hearts' with 'Investigating things', 'Cultivating their persons' with 'Illustrating illustrious virtue throughout the kingdom', 'Regulating their families' with 'Ordering their own states'). Being based on this, 'Being sincere in their thoughts', 'Rectifying their hearts', 'Cultivating their persons' and 'Regulating their families' were understood as four individual and subjective human-basic-essential activity. • This study was conducted to investigate how to apply the theories of oriental medicine appropriately, which direction should be taken, and how it should be developed The results are as follows. First, to develop medicinal cuisine, it is necessary to grasp the theoretical system, considering Ohaeng and Omi, the five viscera and the six entrails, organs and body, by raising the level of understanding comprehensively about the relationship between the characteristics of each groups of Sasang Constitutions and the theories of Eumyangohaeng, and the relationship between the theory of Kimi. and food, and then to explain developed medicinal cuisine and apply those theories to inventing new ones. Secondly, to develop medicinal cuisine for health enhancement, it is also required not only to consider constitutions but also to suggest the need of knowledge for moderation in terms of regimen along with the theory of Kimi. Thirdly, to develop medicinal cuisine according to the perspective of Kimi. Theory, what should be taken into account is not only the understanding of the characteristics of food materials, but also the properties of them that the theory of Kimi, Eumyangohaeng, and Sasang Constitutions share so that it is possible to invent medicinal cuisine which is good for anybody to protect disease specific to a certain group of constitutions with, and serves as the dietary regimen customed to each constitution group. Lastly, the scientific effect of the medicinal cuisine which is developed according to the theory of Kimi., Eumyangohaeng, and Sasang Constitutions should be verified by scientific researches and clinical experiments. And it is believed to be essential for the government to make efforts to set a standard and laws to validate the medicinal effects and the process of assessment so that the systematic development can be encouraged, and to prepare guidance to food development for national health improvement.
