Effect of Gaps on Species Diversity in the Naturally Regenerated Mixed Broadleaved-Korean Pine Forest of the Xiaoxing'an Mountains, China

  • Recognizing the ecological importance of forest gap formation for forest community structure, we examined the differences in species diversity between forest gaps and closed canopy areas for trees and shrubs in three developmental stages (seedling, sapling I, and sapling II) in a typical mixed broadleaved-Korean pine forest. We randomly placed 100 sample plots ($2{\times}2m$ for seedling and sapling I, and $5{\times}5m$ for sapling II) in forest gap and closed canopy areas of a 9 ha permanent sample plot for vegetation surveys of plants of each developmental stage in each habitat type. Even though the formation of forest gaps encouraged the occurrence of gap-dependent species and increased overall species diversity, there were no significant differences in species richness among the three developmental stages for both tree and shrub species (p>0.05). Comparing the two types of sites, statistical tests revealed no difference in species richness for trees, but highly significant differences (p<0.01) between forest types for shrubs for seedlings and sapling I, but not sapling II. Analysis of variance test indicated that there were no significant differences in species diversity among the three developmental stages of tree species (p>0.05) for both Simpson and Shannon indices. The variance for shrub seedlings was significantly different between forest gaps and closed canopy areas, but not for sapling I and sapling II. The analysis showed that the species diversity in forest gaps was significantly different from that of closed canopy areas for seedling and sapling I (p<0.01), but not for sapling II (p>0.05).

Studies on the Conditions of Softwood Cutting for Production of Mulgerry Sapling (뽕나무 묘목생산을 위한 신소삽목 조건 구명)

  • Most of the mulberry saplings in Korea have been produced by grafting. But the production of mulberry sapling by this method is very complex process and requires high level of technique and two years to produce saplings. Therefore, to develop the mulberry sapling production system by softwood cutting method which is suitable for mass production, several conditions on rooting and growth of cuttings were investigated. The rooting ability of cuttings varied according to mulberry varieties, showing the highest rooting ratio of 93.3% in cultivar of Shingwangppong. Of different soil texture as for rooting media, the clay was found to be the best; other media decreased in order as follows; sand, sand loam and vermiculite. The shading ratio by 70% with polyethylene film showed the highest rooting ratio of the cuttings. Optimum day of cutting was around 50th day after sprouting, whereas the ratio of stem thicker than 7mm at the base of saplings in diameter was highest at 44th day.

A Study on Standing Crops of Seedlings and Sapling in Pinus rigida Forest (리기다소나무 임상에 있어서의 Seedling 및 Sapling의 현존량에 관한 연구)

  • Distribution and standing crops of seedling and sapling as undergrowing tree were investigated in a Pinus rigida forest. The relative light intensity(RLI) on the ground level was 3.9∼59.3% which indicates a wide range. Under this range of RLI seedlings and saplings distribute well in the stand. Eight trees were selected from the stand, then measured dry weight of stem, branches and leaves using thestratified clip technique. A possible relationship between the diameter at the bottom of the tree (Do) and standing crops was investigated. As Do increased from 0.8cm (T1) to 7.2cm (T8), the standing crops also increased from 42.6g to 7,410.4g. Since semi-log values between Do and standing crops clearly indicates a straight line, there is close relationship between these two factors. Therefore it is possible to estimate the standing crops of seedling and sapling by measuring Do. Productive structure shows that phytosynthetic layer is located above the 1/2 height of the tree and maximum photosynthetic layer apperars on 2/3 level in height.

  • This experimental work was carried out to know the best method in producing the root stock effectively. The major experimental work was carried out by using Kairyo-Nezumigaeshi, and the comparative works were carried out by using Ichi-Hei, Kairyo-Nezumigaeshi, Ro-Soh, Yongchon-Chuwoo and Suwon No. 4. Results obtained from the test are as follows. 1. The larger size of the branch burried, the better live ratio and the quality of the sapling was found, and there was no significant difference between the top part and bottom part of the branch from the point of view of the ratio, but it was found that the top part showed better live ratio and quality. Mean time there was no difference in live ratio between the two sprouts root-stock type and the three sprouts root-stock type. 2. When the live ratio and sapling quality was compared from the aspect of the new root development, the heavy and medium developed root type showed better result than the poor developed one. 3. For the ambushing depth test of the root-stock, the root-stock which was painted with paraffin on the top and exposed in the air was found to have best live ratio. Mean time, even though paraffin was not painted all the top of the root-stock, the one which was exposed the top of it or the one ambushed with thin soil layer, showed better live ratio than the one deep ambushed. 4. There was difference for the live ratio between the perpendicularly ambushed root-stock and the lied ambushed mot-stock, but the former method showed better sapling quality. 5. The soil nature did not show any difference for the live ratio between the sand loam and clay loam, but the former one showed better sapling quality. 6. There was no difference live ratio between the mulberry varieties, but Yongchon-Chuwoo showed best sapling quality. 7. The grafted sapling production cost was 2.30 won and cattage sapling cost was 1.61 won.

  • This experiment is conducted fer method cf bring to perfectly from defective cutting sapling 25 a production method of sapling which is to substitute for conventional graf ting. 1. In green wood cutting root comes out after 15 days of cutting with nearly straight development of root system; after 40 days of cutting, roots with total length of 1119 mms 43 roots, and 5.4 grs a root in total weight obtained. 2. Survival percentage of green wood cutting ranges between 56% and 90%, average 73% of that and it varies with natural characteristics of varietes. The results show variety of Gaeryang-Suban and Iljiroe with 80% as a best ones in contrast with the variety of Shipyung. 3. The varietics or Gaeryang-Suban. Iljiroe, Suwon-Sang No.4, Rosang makes of much more roots than Yongchonchuwoo and Shipyung do. 4. Root ability made good number of roots commercially, when cutting is conducted soaking in 0.01 % NAA solution or 0.02% NAA solution for 2 or 3 seconds as a chemical promoter. 5. Economical measures for increase of scion adapted 1) 2 scions from a green wood 50 cm long should be taken and basal pan of scion at its middle portion should be cut right under the node. 2) Scions below 50cm long may be used. Small scions or growthceased shoots h3ve also considerable root ability enough to be used. 3) Thus far, up 100,000 scions might be produced in 10 a. 6. We can find number of root increased, when cutting the opposite side in obliquity manner at 450. 7. When 110,000 saplings in 10 a. for the production of bring to perfectly from defective cutting sapling planted, quality of stocks does not go to bad condition without any obstacles in practical use. 8. Although the times or grafting delayed until middle of July, quality of sapling goes just a little down. Grafting may be conducted from early June to middle of July separately in several times, and the green wood of prunned mulberry in spring is available for a scion after end of June. 9. 10 grs weight of defective cutting sapling makes 95% of complete sapling, otherwise 5 or 10 grs in weight of one becomes 80% of complete sapling with its quality as similar as grafted one. 10. When the sapling planted, its branches should be cut, leaving 3 or 4 buds at the bottom of new branches. 11. In view of economical stand point, production cost of bring to perfectly from defective cutting sapling obtains 52% of grafting cost.

Effects on Habitation of Monochamus alternatus by Tending of Sapling Japanese Red Pine(Pinus densiflora) Forest (소나무 치수림 가꾸기가 솔수염하늘소의 서식에 미치는 영향)

  • Cage plots were established in 2008 to find the relationship between combination of tended Japanese red pine sapling and the habitation of Monochamus alternatus, a vector for pine wood nematode. Japanese red pine sapling tended at different times were successively put into the cage, and then the adult of Monochamus alternatus was put in June. Presence or absence of the larva was determined November. Sapling tendings were done at seven successive times in 2009, mid- and late February and March, mid-April, May and June. Some saplings were also tended in mid-October of 2008, the previous year of this experiment. The larva was found in all the saplings tended later than mid-March in 2009. No larva was found in the saplings tended in mid-October of 2008 and those in February of 2009. In case of the combination the by-products of mid-February and late March of 2009 and mid-October of 2008, the larva was found in the by-product of mid-February and late March of 2009, but those in mid-October of 2008 was not. When the saplings tended in mid-October of 2008 and mid- and late February of 2009 were put into the cage singly, the larva was found in all the saplings. Results indicated the mixture of the saplings tended at different times affected the habitation of Monochamus alternatus differently.

Effects on Control of Pine Wilt Disease (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) by Thinning Methods in Red Pine(Pinus densiflora) Forest (소나무림 숲가꾸기 종류가 소나무재선충병의 제어에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect on pine wilt disease by health-thinning, thinning and sapling tending in red pine forest (Pinus densiflora). As a part of developing forestry control methods for pine wilt disease control. In case of putting in pine sawyer (Monochamus alternatus) with pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), the specimen trees in health-thinning, thinning and control treatment were withered more than 50%, although there were not statistically significant differences in treatments. In treatment site, thinning slashes had influenced on the spread of pine wilt disease (experiment 1). In thinning stand of sapling pine, site with thinning slashes had highest mortality (> 90%). There were approximately 10% mortality in the site of carried thinning slashes from case and the site of non-thinning with released M. alternatus (experiment 2). The larvae had not appeared in young tree stump with health-thinning and thinning at April, the current emergence year of M. alternatus, but there were larvae in sapling tree stump with thinning at May, the current emergence year of M. alternatus. In case of stands with infected young and sapling tree by pine wilt disease, there is no effects of on pine wilt disease control by health-thinning, thinning, saplings tending at April and May, the current emergence year of M. alternatus, and leaved thinning slashes had influenced on the spread of pine wilt disease as habitation of M. alternatus.

Studies on the Mulberry Sapling II. Several Factors Affected to the Non-sprouting Sapling (뽕나무 접목묘에 관한 연구 II. 활착불량묘의 발생 원인에 관한 연구)

  • To study the non-sprouting causes of mulberry saplings, 8 treatments, borax + lime + compost, borax, lime, Jamsi fertilizer No. 1, heavy nitrogen application, branch harvest, heavy harvest and no treatment were applied on the nursery garden. The tract used as the paddy field before sapling produced was very poor in the soil chemical and physical properties. The results were as follows; 1. The survial rates of saplings were higher than 98% in the treatments of borax, lime, Jamsi fertilizer No. 1, whereas were higher than 98% in the treatments of borax, lime, Jamsi fertilizer No. 1, whereas heavy nitrogen 59% and heavy harvest 71%. 2. The survial rate was showed deeper relationship with the chemical concentration in stem cortex than in root cortex, especially the content of B, Cu and Zn. 3. The nitrogen content in stem cortex was much higher in the heavy nitrogen treatment by 0.89%, where as 0.6∼0.7% in the other treatments. However, treatments of the heavy harvest and the branch harvest were around 5%. 4. In order to decrease the non-sprouting sapling rate, nursery garden should be good in soil chemical and physical properties. Harvest from saplings and heavy nitrogen application should be prevented and lime or Jamsi fertilizer should be applied to saplings.

Studies on the Mulberry Sapling 1. Soil Characteristics of Nursery Garden Producing Nonsprouting Sapling. (뽕나무 접목묘에 관한 연구 I. 활착불량상묘 발생 묘포지의 토양특성에 관한 연구)

  • soil survey and chemical analysis on mulberry nursery garden were carried out to study the causes of the non-sprouting phenomenon occured seriously in Buy and Ogchun in 1983 and Sangju in 1984. In addition, 115 nursery garden soils taken from 21 sapling produsers in Chungbuk province were analyzed in 1984. The results were as follows, 1. Symptom of dead saplings was the highest in boron deficiency by 59% and the lowest in rot symptom. The rest of saplings by 34.9% were not detected any symptom. 2. The nursery gardens showen non-sprouting phonomenon were located along the stream. As the result, soil depth was shallow, around 20cm deep and subsoil composed with coarse sand and gravels. 3. Nursery soils were mostly strong acid, low in Ca and Mg content, especially B, whereas available phosphorus and potassium were abundant at some gardens, and deficient at others. 4. Application of red earth or borax to nursery garden, especially to paddy, increased sprouting rate. 5. Paddy nursery garden occupied by 52.8% of 60.8ha of total garden area in Chungbuk province. Ninty point five percent of the nursery garden was lower in pH than 6.5, 87.0% lower in K than 0.5me/100g, 40.8% lower in Ca than 6.5me/100g, 94.8% lower in Mg the 2.00me/100g 99.1% lower in B than 0.3ppm.
