  • The purpose of this study is to present a case of secondary dementia caused by diffuse axonal injury. We diagnosed this patient with diffuse axonal injury by using brain computerized tomography(CT) and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), and also diagnosed secondary dementia based on DSM-IV. To evaluate prognosis of the patient, we used K-DRS(Korean-Dementia Rating Scale) and gave him a written test. As a result of treating this patient with oriental medicine, the K-DRS score increased and the overall clinical symptoms improved. In oriental medicine, case studies of diffuse axonal injury are yet insufficient, hence more clinical studies and researches will be needed.

  • Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the effect of herbal extract medicines for inpatients with fever symptoms in an oriental medicine hospital. Methods: Medical records of inpatients who experienced over $38^{\circ}C$ of fever from July 2010 to August 2011 has been requested with deleted personal identifiable information. The requested data were analyzed by patients' general characteristics, administrated western/herbal medicines, and changes in the body temperature of four administration groups (group 1, herbal extract medicine only; group 2, western medication(antibiotics/antipyretics) only; group 3, combination of herbal extract medicine and western medication; group 4, no medication control). The SPSS 19.0 was used for statistical analysis and p-value of less than 0.05 was regarded significant. Results: The body temperature has significantly dropped over time in the herbal extract medicine only group (p<0.001) along with the antibiotics/antipyretics only group. When both treatments were combined, stronger antipyretic effect was shown compared to the sole treatment of herbal extract medicine or antibiotics/antipyretics. Conclusion: The use of herbal extract medicines may be effective in alleviation of fever.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze harmful heavy metals, sulfur dioxide and residual pesticides in 27 kinds of oriental medical materials. This study was carried out on 27 samples of oriental medical materials. The GC-ECD(Varian, CP-3800) was used to analyze residual pesticides. ICP-OES(Varian, Vista-MPX) was used to analyze lead, arsenic, cadmium. Mercury was analyzed by amalgamation method. A modified Monier-Williams method was used to analyze sulfur dioxide. Arsenic was detected less than 3(mg/kg) in 14 samples and was not detected 13 samples. Lead was detected less than 5(mg/kg) in 15 samples and was not detected 12 samples. Mercury was detected less than 0.2(mg/kg) in 15 samples and was not detected 12 samples. Cadmium was detected more than 0.3(mg/kg) in 3 samples was detected less than 0.3(mg/kg) in 16 samples and was not detected 11 samples. A few residual pesticides was detected, but all residual pesticides was safe. Sulfur dioxide was detected in all samples, but all residual sulfur dioxide was safe.

  • Generally, hiccup is a temporary symptom, however, persistent or intractable hiccup that repeats continuously or does not respond to medical treatments makes the patients very painful. In this case, a seventy-two years old patient with pontine infarction showed symptoms as aspiration pneumonia and persistent hiccup a few days after hospitalized. We considered him as excess heat pattern and prescribed Yangkyuk-san. In the result, not only the frequency and intensity of hiccup were remarkably decreased but also the inflammation and overall symptoms by pontine infarction were improved.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze harmful heavy metals, sulfur dioxide and residual pesticides in 30 kinds of oriental medical materials. This study was carried out on 30 samples of oriental medical materials. The examination's methods fallow the guideline of Food and Drug Administration. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-OES) was used to analyze lead, arsenic, cadmium. Mercury was analyzed by amalgamation method. A modified Monier-Williams method was used to analyze sulfur dioxide. The Gas Chromatography / Electron Capture Detector (GC/ECD) was used to analyze residual pesticides. Most of the results were within normal limits at baseline. but Cadmium was detected 0.523 mg/kg more than 0.3 mg/kg in Cinnamomi ramulus and Endosulfan was detected 11.595 mg/kg more than 0.2 mg/kg in Alismatis rhizoma. We needs to keep the quality of herbal medicines assessing and controling for safety of herbal medicines.

  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia that is a potent independent risk factor for stroke. The incidence of AF increases with age and most affected people have underlying cardiac disease. An aging society increases the incidence of AF patients. The case was designed to evaluate the improving effect of Chengsim Yeunja-tang (CYT) for atrial fibrillation (AF) with Cb-infarction patients. This patient was treated with CYT and had significant improvement in symptoms and change of EKG. -Heart rate decreased in patients with higher than normal heart rate -RV5+SV1 voltage decreased (LVH improved) -Arrhythmia remained steady. -Palpitation. chest discomfort, dyspnea, headache, dizziness diminished. Results suggest that CYT is an effective treatment for Taeumin AF patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to report the effect of GwiBiTang and gagambang, acupuncture and moxibustion on essential tremor. This study was made on 6 cases that were treated in the OO University Oriental Medicine hospital and evaluated tremor using Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). GwiBiTang was one of the most generally used herbal medication, diagnosed as dual deficiency of the heart-spleen. In five patients out of six, VAS scores decreased. Two patients's scores decreased to 0 point. Three patients's score decreased to 2, 5 and 6 point, respectively. One patient was maintained on these Korean medical treatment for 26 days with no decrease of VAS score in tremor. The overall therapeutic effect was "markedly improved" in 2 (33.3%), "moderately improved" in 3 (50%), "poor" in 1 (16.7%). The results obtained this study suggest that GwiBiTang and gagambang, acupuncture and moxibustion might be effective in the treatment of tremors. Future studies will be required to ascertain the effect of GwiBiTang.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study is to report the change of progress in symptoms and various scales after treated with Mountain Ginseng Pharmacopuncture(MGP) on the patients of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS). Methods : The three ALS patients who treated with MGP, were checked the change of progress by ALS Functional Rating Scale(ALSFRS), ALS Severity Score(ALSSS), grasping power on both arms and circumference of both thighs and calves. Results : After MGP treatment on three ALS patients, first case did not grow worse during MGP treated whereas she got worse rapidly during none treated period. Second case did not grow worse during treated period and third case got worse in progress by slow degrees despite of MGP treatment. Conclusions : Although MGP could not control the progress of ALS completely, MGP may help the improving of quality of life(QOL) in ALS patients and have the effect of delayed ALS progression.
