Effect of elevated temperature on physico-mechanical properties of metakaolin blended cement mortar

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to evaluate the performance of mortars with and without Metakaolin (MK) exposed to elevated temperatures $200^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ for two hours. The binder to sand ratio was kept constant (1:5.23). The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced with MK at 0%, 5%, 10% 20% and 30%. All mixtures were designed to have a flow of $94{\pm}5%$. The compressive strength of mortars before and after exposure to elevated temperature was determined. The formation of various decomposition phases were identified using X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The microstructure of the mortars was examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Test results indicated that MK improves the compressive strength before and after exposure to elevated temperature and that the 20% cement replacement of MK is the optimum percentage.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose new estimation method of unit cement content in hardened concrete. In general, the quantity of cement in hardened concrete is tested by hydrochlonic acid dissolving cement paste, however, hydrochloric acid dissolves sea shell contained in sea sand and lime stone in concrete. Therefore, the tested cement content is apt to estimate greater than actual cement content. The sodium gluconate solution dissolves only cement in concrete, it is hard to dissolve sea shell and lime stone as CaCo3. The effects of the quantity, concentration and temperature of sodium gluconate solution, the ignition temperature, the ignition loss of cement on the cement content and the percentage of dissolution of cement were investigated to establish a test method. From the results of these tests, the fundamental test method for cement content of hardened concrete by sodium gluconate is proposed.

낙동강 하구에 서식하는 자주새우(Crangon affinis)의 생태학적 연구 (Ecology of Sand Shrimp, Crangon affinis in the Nakdong River Estuary, Korea)

  • Ecology of Crangon affinis was studied in the Nakdong River Estuary fron June 1988 to May 1989. The growth rate of female was similar to that of male. Size differences, however, were apparent between female and male. Sex ratio varies with season. The major spawning season was from June 1988 to May 1989 except for November 1988. The number of eggs of the largest ovigerous female (35.55mm TL) was over 4,000, while that of the smallest ovigerous female (15.05mm TL) more than 120. The mean number of eggs was 1778. The size of winter eggs is larger than that of the summer eggs. The mean percentage of egg loss from brooding to hatching was $29.06\%$. The rate of egg loss decreases with increasing age. Major component of food organisms includes mysids and polycheates.

  • Immobilization of contaminants in contaminated soils by solidification processes is an attractive potential remediation process. In this study, the treatability of lead, copper, toluene, and COD was investigated by leaching test. Industrial sand was adopted as the test material and was contaminated with lead copper, and toluene to 100mg/kg, 500mg/kg, 200mg/kg respectively. P solidifying agent was used as the binder(20% by weight of contaminated soil) in the solidification treatment. The leachability of contaminants leached from the solidified soil was evaluated using column test. The percentage of contaminants leached from the solidified soil was significantly reduced by reaction of waste species with cement components and encapsulation reaction of binder. Based on the tests, it is ascertained solidification process can be a very effective method to control the elution of contaminants from the contaminated soil.

Properties of concrete incorporating granulated blast furnace slag as fine aggregate

  • The present work investigates about the development of a novel construction material by utilizing Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBS), an industrial waste product, as substitution of natural fine aggregates. For this, experimental work has been carried out to determine the influence of GBS on the properties of concrete such as compressive strength (CS), modulus of elasticity, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), chloride penetration, water absorption (WA) volume of voids (VV) and density. Concrete mixes of water/cement (w/c) ratios 0.45 and 0.5, and incorporating 20%, 40% and 60% of GBS as partial replacement of natural fine aggregate (sand) are designed for this study. The results of the experimental investigation depict that CS of concrete mixes increases with the increasing percentages of GBS. Moreover, the decrease in chloride penetration, WA and VV, and improvement in the modulus of elasticity, UPV, density of concrete is reported with the increasing percentage of GBS in concrete.

  • This paper introduces a study of concrete structures with a broken tire and a flat tire as a complete overhaul. The materials used to make concrete in this study are solid aggregate, cement, sand, flat tire, broken wheel, drinking water, and Ordinary Portland Cement. A total of 6 main compounds were thrown into solid cylinders and replaced by 0% as a controller followed by 5% and 10%. The cylinder pressure test of the concrete is done by applying the same pressure to the cylinders until a failure occurs. The results of the pressure test show that by applying 5% aggregation the pressure decreases. In Crumb wheel joints, the compression force decreases constantly as the percentage change increases. Therefore, the crumb wheel is not recommended for use as a complete replacement due to its compressive church power.

초분광 근적외선 영상 기술을 이용한 흙의 함수비 측정 기술 (Soil Water Content Measurement Technology Using Hyperspectral Visible and Near-Infrared Imaging Technique)

  • 본 연구에서는 초분광 근적외선 영상을 이용하여 광역지역의 흙의 함수비 변화를 간편한 방법으로 예측하기 위해 수행되었다. 근적외선(VNIR) 영역대에서 변화되는 함수비 별로 모래, 화강풍화토(우면산, 구룡산, 대모산, 황령산), 카오리나이트를 초분광 카메라로 촬영하여 반사율을 추출하였고, 흙의 함수비와 가장 연관성 높은 매개변수를 찾기 위하여 선정된 매개변수와 함수비를 변수로하여 Partial Least Square Regression(PLSR) 분석을 이용하여 함수비 예측모델을 구축하였다. 함수비 예측모델을 구축한 결과, 흙의 종류에 관계없이 Area of reflectance(Near-infrared, NIR)의 매개변수가 흙의 함수비와 가장 연관성 높은 매개변수임을 확인하였고, 모든 흙에서 예측모델의 정확도(R2)는 0.9 이상임을 확인하였다. 또한 흙의 실제 함수비와 비교 검증해본 결과, 평균절대백분율(mean absolute percentage error, MAPE)이 15%이내로 확인되었다. 따라서 대상 흙들에서 50% 이내에서 변화되는 함수비 예측 가능성을 확인하였다. 본 연구를 통해 초분광 근적외선 영상을 이용하여 모래, 화강풍화토, 카오리나이트의 함수비 예측 가능성을 확인하였고, 모델의 정확도 개선 및 더 높은 범위의 함수비 예측을 위해서는 흙의 분류모델 개발이 추가적으로 필요하다고 판단된다.

Germination and Growth Performance of A Native Threatened Tree Species Quercus gomeziana A. Camus in Nursery Stage: Case of Bangladesh

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different pre-sowing treatments of seeds on germination and growth performance of native threatened tree species Quercus gomeziana A. Camus at the nursery of Chittagong University, Bangladesh. Furthermore, seedling growth attributes under different doses of fertilizer (urea) was also experimented to find the best dose of fertilizer on this tree species at the nursery stage for better field level growth. Seeds were placed to six pre-sowing treatments e.g. control (PT0), treated with sand paper rubbing (PT1), nicking (PT2), seeds immersed in cold water for 48 hours (PT3), seeds immersed in cold water for 7 days (PT4) and seeds sown at propagator house with increased temperature (PT5). It was found from the study that germination was started earlier (at 31 days) in treatments sand paper rubbing (PT1) and nicking (PT2). The highest germination percentage (93%) was in PT1 followed by 86% in seeds immersed in cold water for 7 days (PT4) and 80% in PT0 (control). Germination percentage was observed least (63%) in PT2 even though germination started earlier. For fertilizer dose experiment to seedlings at the nursery level, treatment FT1: 100 kg/ha (0.33679 g urea/pot/seedling) comparing with other treatments FT0: 0 kg/ha (Control), FT2: 200 kg/ha (0.67358 g urea/pot/seedling), FT3: 300 kg/ha (1.01037 g urea/pot/seedling) showed better performance in case of collar diameter (6.74 mm), number of leaves, shoot dry weight (19.74), total dry weight (28.16 g), total fresh weight (67.96 g), volume index (3904.82), sturdiness (127.69). Finally, it can be concluded that Quercus gomeziana seedlings revealed better performances under the treatment FT1 in growth and biomass production. Findings of this study will be helpful to take decision on organic fertilizer dose application to seedlings of Q. gomeziana for large scale plantation and conservation of this species.

몇가지 잡초들의 추출물과 잔유물의 알팔파에 대한 타감작용 (Allelopathic Effect of Some Weed Species Extracts and Residues on Alfalfa)

  • 본 실험은 포장에서 주로 발생하는 velvetleaf등을 비롯하여 7종류의 잡초를 마른 상태와 생체상태로 각각 수확하여 지상부와 지하부로 나누어 물질을 추출 이들을 alfalfa 종자 발아와 생육정도 검정에 사용하여 지상부와 지하부의 생육억제정도를 비교하였으며 이 중 억제효과가 제일 큰 velvet-leaf의 추출물은 여러 농도로 silica sand와 혼합하여 alfalfa에 대한 타감작용을 검토하였다. 1. 7종류 잡초의 지상부와 지하부의 추출물 처리는 alfalfa의 발아율, 발아세, 유근의 길이, 무게 등을 억제시켰다. 지상부와 지하부의 억제효과를 비교하면 지상부의 추출물이 지하부의 추출물 보다 더 큰 타감작용을 보였으며, 이 중에서 velvetleaf 추출물이 가장 억제적이었고, crab-grass 추출물은 가장 낮은 억제 정도를 보였다. 또 alfalfa 발아와 유근의 생육에 대한 velvetleaf의 건조 추출물과 생체 추출물을 비교하면 건조 추출물이 더 억제적이었다. 2. 농도에 따르는 velvetleaf 추출물 처리에서는 농도가 증가할수록 alfalfa 발아율, 유근의 길이, 무게 등이 대조구와 비교하여 상대적으로 더 억제되었다. 3. 건조된 velvetleaf 잔기를 silica sand와 혼합처리에서 잔기의 비율이 증가 될수록 alfalfa의 출현율과 생존율이 더 억제되었으며 그 정도는 잔기 비율 1%에서 가장 억제적이었다. 4. 잡초의 추출물과 잔기의 처리는 alfalfa의 발아와 생육에 억제적으로 작용 하여 타감작용이 인정되었다.

낙동강 하구 새섬매자기 군락지 지화학 연구 (Geochemical Characteristics of Scirpus planiculmis Habitats in Nakdong Estuary, Korea)

  • 낙동강 하구는 다양한 하구개발로 인해 수리 및 지형적인 변화를 겪고 있는 지역으로, 이러한 물리화학적 변화는 낙동강 하구 생태계에 영향을 주고 있다. 특히 낙동강 하구에 도래하는 겨울철새들의 주요 먹이원인 새섬매자기 군락지 및 개체수는 지난 10여년간 지속적인 감소를 보이고 있다. 낙동강 하구의 새섬매자기 개체수 감소 원인 파악을 위해 6개 정점에서 2018년 6월과 8월에 약 30cm의 주상퇴적물을 채취하였다. 퇴적물은 사질이 80% 이상으로 매우 조립하였으며, 평균 염분은 6월 $17.8{\pm}1.12psu$, 8월 $18.4{\pm}1.83psu$였다. 을숙도 퇴적물의 탄소안정동위원소비(${\delta}^{13}C$)는 평균 $-24.7{\pm}0.59$‰로 하구기원 입자성 유기물 특성을 보였다. 표층(0~1cm)에서 ${\delta}^{13}C$는 -24.0 ~ -22.6‰로 새섬매자기 뿌리와 줄기의 ${\delta}^{13}C$($-25.2{\pm}0.05$‰) 보다 다소 높았다. 이는 해양 유기물의 유입이 원인으로 판단된다. 식생지역과 비식생지역의 물리화학적 특성은 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았으며, 이를 통하여 낙동강 하구 새섬매자기 군락지 환경이 비식생 지역과 거의 동일함을 유추할 수 있다. 결론적으로 낙동강 하구 퇴적물은 조립하고 염분이 15 psu 이상으로, 새섬매자기 생육에 불리한 환경이 유지되고 있음을 유추할 수 있다. 낙동강 염분 상승은 낙동강 하구둑 방류량의 감소가 원인으로 판단되며, 낙동강 하구 염분 상승이 새섬매 자기 생산량의 점진적 감소에 영향을 주었을 것으로 보인다.
