In order to investigate the relationship between the thermal characteristics of the various molds as green sand mold, dry sand mold, $CO_2$ mold and shell mold, and the solidification characteristics of molten metal, the thermal analysis of rarious molds and melt were performed. The structure of Al-Castings was a/so observed. Results obtained in this experiment were as follows : 1) The heating rate of the molds was increased in the order of green sand mold, $CO_2$ mold, dry sand mold and shell mold, On the other hand the solidification time of the melts was shortened in the order of dry sand mold castings, $CO_2$ mold castings, green sand mold castings and shell mold castings. 2) The arrest temperature period in the heating curve of the green sand mold was resulted from the eraporation of moisture contained in mold, which was transfered to the outer side of the mold. 3) The temperature fluctuation of the melt in the shell mold was considered to be resulted from the combution heat of resin contained in the mold. 4) The amounts of heat absorption of the molds were increased in the order of dry sand mold, $CO_2$ mold, green sand mold and shell mold. 5) The higher the solidification rate was, the longer was its shrinkage pipe and the finer its grain size.

Important factors in a casting mold are strength at the mold surface and gas permeability of the mold. This study investigates the effects of pre-pressure and sand particle hardness on gas permeability, with a constraint that the norm of a stiffness array at the mold surface should be higher than a certain value. The constitutive relation is obtained using a hypoplasticity model. This study is firstly attempted to investigate sand behavior in mold fabrication, and will give a theoretical base for fabricating better molds.
AC4C alloy casts in the metallic mold, zircon sand mold, silica sand mold and shell mold with the pouring temperatures of 680, 710 and $740^{\circ}C$ have been investigated. The tensile strength, elongation and hardness of AC4C alloy castings have been influenced by the kind of molds used. The mechanical properties in zircon sand mold castings were greater than those in other sand mold castings, but were inferior to the properties in metallic mold castings. Eutectic Si particle size and DAS were increased in the order of metallic mold, ziron sand mold, silica sand mold and shell mold. Also, they were increased with the increase of pouring temperatures. DAS, eutectic Si particle size and grain size decreased with the increase of mechanical properties as the cooling rate increased. The eutectic Si particle size and DAS of AC4C alloy castings after T6 treatment were decreased in as-cast. The variation of eutectic Si particle size has been effected on the tensile strength, elongation and fractured surface.

The behavior of the burn-on in sand mold has been investigated by varying the pouring metal, bonding materials, additive materials and molding sand. The results obtained from thease experiments are as follows; 1) The burn-on layer of silica sand decreased in order of carbon steel, gray cast iron and stainless steel, and thease burn layer proceeded mostly by producing FeO. 2) The burning reaction of silica sand mold in carbon steel castings declined with increasingly bentonite content, but water-glass scarcely took part in the burn-on reaction. 3) The addition of feldspar and seacoal to silica sand promoted the inhibiting burn-on. 4) The burn-on layer of sand mold decreased of silica sand, chromite sand and olivine sand.
Silica sand, zircon sand, and steel shots were used as mold packing materials in lost foam casting of the aluminum alloy bar. Vibration acceleration in three directions and temperatures in the casting and mold were measured, and packing and cooling characteristics of these materials were investigated. Packing densities increased with increase in vibration magnitude and time, and were $1.41{\sim}1.49g/cm^2$ for silica sand, $2.54{\sim}2.86g/cm^2$ for zircon sand, and $3.92{\sim}4.52g/cm^2$ for steel shots. Sound castings were obtained only without evacuation of the flask during pouring. Solidification time became faster in order of silica sand, zircon sand and steel shot packing because steel shot has the highest cooling capacity of them. Solidification time of steel shot packing was shortened to about 1/2 of silica sand packing. Cooling capacity of sand mold was generally evaluated by heat diffusivity of the mold, however could be simply evaluated with specific heat per unit volume of the packing material in lost foam casting.
An accident from machine work is often fatal to the worker. This accident is mostly preventable through perfect process jig. In case of this machine work, however, the disaster frequently occurred because of the design which is not considered the beginning of product design, post-process and mass process of production. As for sand casting method, this has the merits of the production; the product is easily produced by manual labor. On the other hand, this method has the demerits of a bigger dimensional error contrary to other mass process of production. When the sand casting product is in machine work, there are various problems such as unsafe fix and excessive cutting, product desorption and rapid life depreciation of equipment and tools. Considering the characteristics of sand casting method, it is accepted as difficulty to improve the problems. In this study, it suggests shell mold method for mold instead of the machine work after the sand casting of the circle shape container product. And the surface accomplishes the following average of surface roughness Ra$9.94{\mu}m$ of machine work with the casting of flask mold by shell mold method. In accordance with the simplification of processing process and reducing the average thickness variation by mass production of product with detailed appearance, it has a good influence on safety accident prevention caused by production and damaged product. It is confirmed that making higher degree of size precision of all machine work product is possible to increase the safety and productivity, reduce the processing process and improve environment.
These are many kinds of self-hardening methods for sand mold using sodium silicate. When sodium silicate solution is mixed with calcium-orthosilicate powder hardening reaction occurs, which is based for self-hardening method at high temperature. The high temperature strength and resicual strength of mold are related to the mole ratio of sodium silicate and the contents of calcium-orthosilicate powder. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1) The high temperature strength of mold was maximum at about $600^{\circ}C$, and at higher temperature showed lower value on the contrary. 2) The high temperature strength of mold was increased by increasing the amount of sodium silicate having lower mole ratio and high concentration. 3) The residual strength of mold was reduced by increasing the mole ratio of sodium silicate and increasing the concentration of calcium-orthosilicate.
The effects of melting and casting conditions on cast structures of Cu-Sn-Pb alloys were studied. Specimens were prepared at different pouring temperatures of $1100^{\circ}C$ to $1260^{\circ}C$ with use of various kind of molds, green sand mold, $CO_2$ sand mold, shell mold, furan sand mold and metallic mold. (1) The transition of equiaxed to columnar structure greatly influenced by adding elements and mold binders. (2) The change of equiaxed structure according to pouring temperatures were expressed by separation theory. Lower pouring temperature and rapid cooling rate increase hardness and it's further increase was shown in the region of columnar structure. (3) Proper controls of pouring temperature, cooling rate and mold binder were important factors to improve wear properties of Cu-Sn-Pb alloys castings.

The heat transfer of the mold in the casting process has been calculated by considering the mold as a uniform isotropic material. Since the mold was not a uniform isotropic material, however, the calculation was performed with approximate values, and in particular, estimated values were used when considering compaction and the amount of added binder. In this study, a calculation algorithm of the thermal properties of the sand mold was developed. An algorithm for calculating the thermal conductivity and specific heat based on a thermal resistance model in the case of mono-dispersed sand grains was also developed and applied to sand molds with various size distributions. The thermal properties of sand were calculated for artificial sand, and relatively close values compared to the experimental values were obtained.

The Part of slot on rotary compressor which plays an important part of the reliability and performance is studied on machinability and the wear characteristics for the specimen made by sand mold and permanent mold. The experiment are used the face cutter of milling machine which make the processing surface like broaching process and rollblock wear test machine. Permanent-mold casting iron is not affected by variation of RPM of milling machine, but sand-mold cast-iron is improved to increasing RPM. Also sand-mold casting iron shows superior wear characteristic to permanent-mold casting iron. This results from harder matrix of pearlite structure and self-lubrication characteristics of graphite. And wear particles in tested oil show shape and size similar to severe wear particles of oil taken from rotary compressor. The material and surface condition of slot play important part of the reliability and performance.
