Object : This study was done to evaluate the inhibitory effect of Samul-tang (Siwu-tang) on collagen production by cultured murine hepatic non-parenchymal cells. Methods : Hepatic non-parenchymal cells were cultured from normal Sprague-Dawley rats and established in a primary cell culture on uncoated plastic culture plates. The Samul-tang (Siwu-tang) was treated into the cell culture media for 72 hours and the cells were harvested for analysis. Analyses were done on cell proliferation, [3H]thymidine incorporation assay and procollagen type IC-peptide. Results : The cultured cells resembled fibroblasts in shape and produced procollagen which is consistent to fibrogenesis in vivo. Proliferation of the non-parenchymal cells was inhibited slightly and the [3H]thymidine incorporation assay showed a dose-dependent decrease by Samul-tang (Siwu-tang) treatment. Production of procollagen type I C-peptide was decreased by low-concentration treatment of the Samul-tang (Siwu-tang), but increased by high-concentration treatment. Conclusion : It seemed that the cells were responding to the Samul-tang (Siwu-tang) in low-concentration, thus producing less collagen. However, when the drug was administered with high enough concentration to cause excessive stimulation of cells, it seemed that the activated cells might overly produce procollagen, the precursor of collagen, thus aggravating fibrosis of the liver. So, it is considered that the proper concentration of Samul-tang (Siwu-tang) is important when treating patients with liver cirrhosis based on the patients' status.

Objectives: Samul-tang(Siwu-tang) has been traditionally prescribed a medicine as a restorative. Methods: In this study, we investigated the acute toxicity about water-extracted Samul-tang(Siwu-tang). Twenty-five mice completed 14 days of oral Samul-tang(Siwu-tang) at the respective doses of 0(control group), 2560, 3200, 4000 and 5000mg/kg. Results: We observed survival rates, general toxicity, change of body weight, and autopsy. Conclusions: Compared with the control group, we could not find any toxic alteration in all treated groups (2560, 3200, 4000 and 5000mg/kg). $LD_{50}$ of Samul-tang(Siwu-tang) was over 5000mg/kg and it is very safe to ICR mice.

Samul-tang(Siwu-tang) has been traditionally prescribed as a restorative. The present study was undertaken to determine the possible toxic effects of Samul-tang on SD rats. In this study, we investigated the subacute toxicity of water-extracted Samul-tang(Siwu-tang) on SD rats. Twenty rats were orally adiministered Samul-tang for 28 days at a dose of 0 mg/kg(control group) or 1500 mg/kg(treated group), respectively. All of subjects was survived. No significant difference in abnormal clinical signs, related to hematological values, serum biochemical values, water and feed intake, coagulation time, autopsy analysis, organ weight, tissue microscopically, funduscopy, urine intake and urinalysis, was detected. Compared with the control group, we could not find any subacute toxic alteration in treated group (1500 mg/kg) for 28 days. This result suggests that Samul-tang(Siwu-tang), a herbal medicine prescription, is a safe prescription to body.

Objectives : To report cases of HIVD of L-Spine successfully treated with Korean medical treatment including Samul-tang(Siwu-tang) Gagam. and Chuna manual treatment. Methods : Three patients diagnosed with HIVD of L-Spine were treated with Korean medical treatment including Samul-tang(Siwu-tang) Gagam and Chuna manual treatment. Numeric Rating Scale(NRS), Oswestry low back pain Disablility Index(ODI) scores and EQ-5D were collected before and after treatment for comparison. Results : There was a significant decrease in NRS, ODI scores.And, there was a significant increase EQ-5D. The mean NRS score decresed from 10 to 1.33, ODI from 66.66 to 8.88. Tne mean EQ-5D score incresed from 0.225 to 0.856. Conclusion : The result suggests Korean medical treatment including Samul-tang(Siwu-tang) Gagam and Chuna manual treatment can be an effective treatment on patients with HIVD of L-Spine.

Through analyzing the frequencies of medicinal herb combinations in the prescriptions of "Bangyakhappyeon(方藥合編)", we could understand the characteristics of prescription composition and author's medical thoughts. So we conducted this study that analyze combination of 324 medicinal herbs in 467 prescriptions, and found meaningful combinations of 5,045. Among these, the most meaningful combination is the one of 10 herbs, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer, Angelica gigas Nakai, Ziziphus jujube Mille, Atractylodes japonica Koidzumi, Poria cocas Wolf, Zingiber officinale, Rehmanniae radix preparata, Cinnamomum loureirii, Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer, Astragalus membranaceus. This combination is Sibjeondaebo-tang(Shiquandabu-tang) without Cnidium officinale and Paeonia japonica which compose Samul-tang(Siwu-tang). It means this combination is kind of modified Sibjeondaebo-tang(Shiquandabu-tang), which is more effective in tonifying qi than tonifying blood. Prescriptions of "Bangyakhappyeon(方藥合編)" involve herbs mostly used to improve weak and frail health and the herbs which are more effective in tonifying qi than tonifying blood. Through this study, we know the author' s one of medical view points on tonifying qi and blood, attaching importance to tonifying qi relatively to tonifying blood.
