Diurnal and Nocturnal Behaviour of Airborne Cryptomeria japonica Pollen Grains and the Allergenic Species in Urban Atmosphere of Saitama, Japan

  • Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) pollinosis is the most popular pollinosis in Japan. It has been reported that Cryptomeria japonica pollen allergenic species are suspended as fine particles in the urban atmosphere. These allergenic fine particles are responsible for inducing asthma by breaking into the lower respiratory tract. It has also been found that pollinosis symptoms on the sufferers appear mainly at night-time by the results from epidemiological studies. However, the exact reason for these phenomena is not yet clarified. In this study, the diurnal and nocturnal behaviours of Cryptomeria japonica pollen grains and their allergenic species in the urban area of Saitama city of Kanto Plain were investigated. Airborne pollen grains and allergenic Cry j 1 concentrations in total suspended particulate matter (TSP) were investigated at two sampling sites, a heavy traffic road (roadside site) and at the balcony of the $10^{th}$ floor of the Building of Research and Project of Saitama University (general urban site). The latter sampling site where located about 300 m away from the roadside site was used as a general urban site unaffected by automobile traffic. The airborne pollen counts were measured with a real-time pollen monitor. Cry j 1 particles were collected with two high volume air samplers, and these concentrations were measured by surface plasmon resonance method with a Biacore J system. The diurnal variation of the airborne pollen counts was similar to the trends of temperature and wind speed during the day-time; whereas its tendency with wind speed trend was not observed during the night-time. Airborne pollen counts were lower with northern wind than with southern wind because the pollen comes from the mountainous areas, and the mountains in the south are closer, about half the distance to the northern mountains. It is suggested that the peaks of airborne pollen counts during night-time in the sampling site occurred by transport of pollen grains released during day-time in the mountainous forest areas, located c.a. 100 km away from the sampling site. On the roadside site the allergenic Cry j 1 concentrations were higher than at the general urban site, nevertheless pollen grains counts were lower. These results suggested that worsening of pollinosis symptoms during night-time in urban area was caused by transport of pollen grains during day-time in the mountainous forest areas. Moreover, pollen allergenic species become different morphology from pollen grain at roadside site, and the subsequent pollen grains re-suspension by automobile traffic.

Tracer Experiment for the Investigation of Urban Scale Dispersion of Air Pollutants - An Improved Method for the Release and Determination of Perfluorocarbon Tracers in the Urban Atmosphere (추적자 확산 실험에 의한 서울 도심 확산 현상 연구 - 도시규모 대기확산 실험을 위한 PFCs 추적자 방출 및 분석 시스템의 개발 및 적용 연구)

  • The release, sampling and analytical methods have been developed and tested for perfluorocarbons (PFCs) atmospheric tracers in order to gain insight into the atmospheric transport and dispersion over the urban conditions of Seoul, Korea. Although PFCs tracer experiments provide unique opportunities to test local and urban scale of transport and dispersion, no previous experiment with PFCs has been conducted in Korea. PMCH and PDCH were chosen as targeted tracers in our study due to their extreme low ambient concentrations and great sensitivities among various PFCs. For PFCs release system, a set of micro-metering pump, electronic balance, vaporizing furnace and high speed blower was constructed for precise and accurate release of tracers. The precision of released rate by this system was estimated to be 1%. Samplings of PFCs were carried out by fabricated portable air samplers with micro pumps and rotameters into glass tubes packed with 150 mg of Carboxen-569. The uncertainty of these sampling system was maintained below 14%. PMCH and PDCH were quantified in GC/ECD with preconditioned injection system to eliminate the interference compounds using traps and subsequent catalytic conversion system prior to column separation. Three intensive field test were undertaken during the springtime of 2002 to 2004 in eastern part of Seoul. Daily background samples were collected to characterize the background levels of PMCH and PDCH prior to their release. The observed background concentrations of PMCH ranged from 3.5 to 10.1 fL/L and varied randomly in location and time in this study. Its mean and standard variation of background concentration ($6.8{\pm}1.9\;fL/L$) are higher than those ($3.2{\sim}5.8\;fL/L$) of other historic tracer studies. Identified uncertainty for background PMCH was $1.7{\sim}2.0\;fL/L$ using this analytical system. Combined relative uncertainty in determining the tracer's concentrations was estimated as 17%. However, its background concentrations and uncertainty in concentration determination were found to be low and stable enough for tracer study.

  • Uncertainty and sensitivity analyses with respect to nuclear data are performed with depletion calculations for BWR and PWR fuel assemblies specified in the framework of the UAM-LWR Benchmark Phase II. For this, the GRS sampling based tool XSUSA is employed together with the TRITON depletion sequences from the SCALE 6.1 code system. Uncertainties for multiplication factors and nuclide inventories are determined, as well as the main contributors to these result uncertainties by calculating importance indicators. The corresponding neutron transport calculations are performed with the deterministic discrete-ordinates code NEWT. In addition, the Monte Carlo code KENO in multi-group mode is used to demonstrate a method with which the number of neutron histories per calculation run can be substantially reduced as compared to that in a calculation for the nominal case without uncertainties, while uncertainties and sensitivities are obtained with almost the same accuracy.

Spatiotemporal Traffic Density Estimation Based on Low Frequency ADAS Probe Data on Freeway (표본 ADAS 차두거리 기반 연속류 시공간적 교통밀도 추정)

  • The objective of this study is to estimate and analyze the traffic density of continuous flow using the trajectory of individual vehicles and the headway of sample probe vehicles-front vehicles obtained from ADAS (Advanced Driver Assitance System) installed in sample probe vehicles. In the past, traffic density of continuous traffic flow was mainly estimated by processing data such as traffic volume, speed, and share collected from Vehicle Detection System, or by counting the number of vehicles directly using video information such as CCTV. This method showed the limitation of spatial limitations in estimating traffic density, and low reliability of estimation in the event of traffic congestion. To overcome the limitations of prior research, In this study, individual vehicle trajectory data and vehicle headway information collected from ADAS are used to detect the space on the road and to estimate the spatiotemporal traffic density using the Generalized Density formula. As a result, an analysis of the accuracy of the traffic density estimates according to the sampling rate of ADAS vehicles showed that the expected sampling rate of 30% was approximately 90% consistent with the actual traffic density. This study contribute to efficient traffic operation management by estimating reliable traffic density in road situations where ADAS and autonomous vehicles are mixed.

  • Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers are intrinsically vulnerable to radio frequency jamming signals due to the fundamental property of radio navigation systems. A GNSS jamming monitoring system that is capable of jamming detection, classification and localization is essential for infrastructure for autonomous driving systems. For these 3 functionalities, a GNSS jamming monitoring network consisting of a multiple of low-cost GNSS receivers distributed in a certain area is needed, and the precise time synchronizaion between multiple independent GNSS receivers in the network is an essential element. This paper presents a precise time synchronization method based on the direct use of Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) technique in signal domain. A block interpolation method is additionally incorporated into the method in order to maintain the precision of time synchronization even with the relatively low sampling rate of the received signals for computational efficiency. The feasibility of the proposed approach is verified in the numerical simualtions.

  • This work describes the installation and preliminary measurements of an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) system to monitor the injection of recycled water into a confined aquifer in the area of Sindos (Thessaloniki N. Greece). The aim is to provide, through time-lapse ERT measurements and processing, geoelectrical images of rather increased volumetric sampling around and between the holes and to obtain improved understanding of the flow and transport of the injected water. The details about the general setting, the construction and installation of the ERT cables into the boreholes are explained in full. Preliminary measurements involving single and cross-hole ERT measurements were obtained and processed with a 2D inversion algorithm to produce images of the subsurface. Results depict a very good correlation between ERT images and the lithology and resistivity logs; an indication of the reliability of the approach.

Benzylacyclouridines ad Nucleoside Transport Inhibitors in Human Erythrocytes (Benzylacyclouridines의 적혈구에 있어서 Nucleoside 수송 억제)

  • Various Benzylacyclouridine (BAU, HM-BAU, suc-BAU, BBAU, HMBBAU, suc-BBAU, and BBBAU) developed as specifc inhibitors of uridine phosphorylase (UrdPase), inhibit transport (zero-trans influx) of ridine (Urd) in human erythrocytes. The inhibition pattern of these compounds is competitive, though suc-BBAU and BBBAU show a slight noncompetivieness. The order of potency as an inhibitor of the nucleoside transport system is BBAU ${\sim}$ HM-BBAU ${\sim}$ suc-BBAU > BBBAU > BAU ${\sim}$ suc-BAU ${\sim}$ HM-BAU ($K_1$ values of 19, 23, 38, 112, 124, 174 and 176 ${\mu}M$, respectively). These data indicate that there is a differnece in potency of Urd transport inhibition between the analogs of BAU and BBAU. Further, the potency correlates with the hydrophobicity of the compound, but it has a limit in the size of $C_5$ substitution. Lead Transport in Groundwater in Door County, Wisconsin (위스컨신주 도어지역의 지하수내 납성분의 이동)

  • This study examined the mechanisms of lead transport in the groundwater system and those of irregular detections in groundwater in Door County, Wisconsin. During the spring recharge period in 1991, water-level movement and water-quality change were monitored from two monitoring wells equipped with three piezometers each and from five house wells, respectively. Water-level responses to recharge events were fast with a relatively short lag time ranging from 3 to 10 days, indicating that recharge of groundwater occurs through the high hydraulic conductivity (K) zones in the Silurian dolomite aquifer system. Lead was detected only on particles filtered from groundwater, but not in dissolved state. Concentrations ranged from 0.2 to $7.1{\mu}g/mg$, converted into the total lead concentration in groundwater ranging from $0.3{\mu}g/l$ to $4.7{\mu}g/l$. A lag time between recharge events and peak particle movement at the sampled wells was estimated to range from 19 to 22 days. Due to the particulate nature of lead in groundwater, only the wells connected with the high K zones detect lead, causing the spatial variation. In a given well, lead concentration varies at different sampling times due to the variation in the initial amounts of lead-carrying particles introduced into the groundwater system during recharge events, the lag in particle transport and the dispersion of lead-carrying particles along the advective flowpaths.

Adaptive QoS Study for Video Streaming Service In MMT Protocol (비디오 스트리밍 서비스를 위한 MMT 기반 적응적 QoS 연구)

  • This paper discusses QoS enhancement in the Best-effort services of the service plan provided by MPEG Media Transport (MMT) systems for video streaming applications. Among MMT services, i.e. per-flow, per-class, and best-effort services, the server does not provide guaranteed bandwidth for the best-effort service only. Therefore, in the best-effort services, a bandwidth access priority is defined for various services, where the lowest priority is assigned to the low-level video services. To alleviate the issue of bandwidth limitation in the best-effort services, this paper investigates transmission of low-resolution video with low bitrate and up-sampling. Our experimental results prove the superiority of the proposed method in terms of delivered video quality.

Estimating magnitude of suspended sediment transport in ungauged east coastal zone (미계측 동해안 유역의 토사유출 규모의 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Coastal sediment archives are used as indicators of changes on shore sediment production and fluvial sediment transport, but rivers crossing coastal plains may not be efficient conveyors of sediment to the coast. In some case there is a net loss of sediment in lower coastal plain reaches, so that sediment input from an upstream exceeds the sediment yield (SY) at the river mouth. The main source of sediment in coastal area is the load from land. In Korea, data on suspended SY are limited owing to a lack of logistic support for systematic sediment sampling activities. This paper presents an integrated approach to estimate SY for ungauged coastal basins, using a soil erosion model and a sediment delivery ratio (SDR) model. For applying the SDR model, a basin specific parameter was validated on the basis of field data. The proposed relationships may be considered useful for predicting suspended SY in ungauged basins that have geologic, climatic and hydrologic conditions similar to the study area.
