Dialogical tuning of the sampling period in fuzzy control systems

  • It is the purpose of this paper to present a dialogical tuning method of the sampling period in fuzzy control systems. Last year, the authors gave a dialogical tuning technique of fuzzy control system under the fixed sampling period in this symposium. In the case where sampling period is chosen larger, the response of the control system is unsatisfactory, and in the case where the sampling period is smaller, ineffective control actions are repeated. The appropriate sampling period is chosen through the step response of the closed loop fuzzy control process. As the tuning technique depends on the controlled plant, it is necessary to estimate the rough characteristics of it. The authors propose a method to decide th appropriate sampling period, by inspecting the characteristics of the plant.

EFFECT OF FEEDING PATTERN ON DIURNAL VARIATION IN FAECAL CHROMIC LEVEL WHEN USING CONTROLLED RELEASE DEVICES IN SHEEP

  • Diurnal variation in faecal chromic oxide levels was estimated from 4 hourly faecal sampling of 56 wethers allotted to one of six different feeding patterns. Sampling occurred on days 6 and 7 (Period 1) after a controlled release device was administered, and was repeated on days 14 and 15 (Period 2) following re-randomisation of the wethers to the feeding patterns. Increasing the frequency of feeding tended to be associated with higher faecal chromic oxide levels (p < 0.05), particularly in wethers fed thrice daily at 8 hour intervals. There was no interaction between feeding pattern and period, sampling day or time within-day. There were significant period x time within-day (p < 0.05) and day x time within-day (p < 0.001) interactions, indicating that variation in faecal chromic oxide between sample times was not consistent. This implies that sampling at any time of day is unlikely to result in a biased estimate of pasture intake, providing sufficient samples are collected. Significant period (p < 0.001) and period x day (p < 0.01) effects were associated with slow faecal chromic oxide equilibration in period 1. Equilibration did not occur until after day 7, indicating a need for caution when commencing sampling.

  • In sensor network environments, each sensor measures the physical environments according to the sampling period, and transmits a sensor reading to the base station. Thus, the sample period influences against importance resources such as a network bandwidth, and a battery power. In this paper, we propose new adaptive sampling technique that adjusts the sampling period of a sensor with respect to the features of sensor readings. The proposed technique predicts a future readings based on KF (Kalman Filter). By using the differences of actual readings and estimated reading, we identify the importance of sensor readings, and then, we adjust the sampling period according to the importance. In our experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique.

  • We have proposed a digital control method, where the controlled variable is a joint angular velocity, of space robot manipulators using the transpose of Generalized Jacobian Matrix. The explicit relationship between the control law and the sampling period, however, is unknown because the controller gains include the sampling period implicitly. This paper presents a novel digital control method which explicitly describes the relation between the sampling period and the controller gains. Computer simulation of a 3-DOF planar space robot manipulator is peformed. Simulation result demonstrates the effctiveness of the proposed method.

  • The fatigue damages in structural details of offshore plants can be accumulated due to various environmental loadings such as swell, wave, wind and current. It is known that load histories acting on mooring and riser systems show stationary and ergodic bimodal wide-banded process. This paper provides refined approach to obtain time signals representing stress range histories from wide-banded bimodal spectrum which consists of ideally narrow-banded and fully separated two spectrums. Variations of the probabilistic characteristics for time signals according to frequency and sampling time increments are compared with the reference data to be the probabilistic characteristics such as zero-crossing period, peak period, and irregularity factor obtained from an assumed ideal spectrum. It is proved that the sampling time increment more affects on the probabilistic characteristics than frequency increment. The fatigue damages according to the frequency and sampling time increments are also compared with the ones with minimum increment condition which are thought to be exact fatigue damage. It is concluded that the maximum sampling time increment to obtain reliable time signals should be determined that ratio of applied maximum sampling time increment and minimum period is less than approximately 0.08.

Optimal Sampling Period of the Digital Control System for the Nuclear Power Plant Steam Generator Water Level Control (증기발생기 수위 제어를 위한 디지탈 제어기의 적정 샘플링 주기)

  • A great effort has been made to improve the nuclear plant control system by use of digital technologies, and a long term schedule for the control system upgrade has been prepared with an aim to implementation in the next generation nuclear plane. In case of digital control system, it is important to decide the sampling period for analysis and design of the system, because the performance and the stability of a digital control system depend on the value of the sampling period of the digital control system. There is, however, currently no systematic method used universally for determining the sampling period of the digital control system. Generally, a traditional way to select the sampling frequency is to use 20 to 30 times the bandwidth of the analog control system which has the same system configuration and parameters as the digital one. In this paper, a new method to select the sampling period is suggested which takes into account of the performance as well as the stability of the digital control system. By use of the frying's model of steam generator, the optimal sampling period of an assumptive digital control system for steam generator level control is estimated and is actually verified in the digital control simulation system for KORI-2 nuclear power plant steam generator level control. Consequently, we conclude the optimal sampling period of the digital control system for KORI-2 nuclear power plant steam generator level control is 1 second for all power ranges.

  • Particle contamination in a hard disk drive has been recognized as an important issue because particles can significantly affect the reliability of the drive. In this study, characteristics of the particle generation in a hard disk drive during the start/stop period were investigated. The number of particles generated in the drive was measured at 5 locations by using condensation nucleus counters(CNC) with sampling probes. It was found that most of particles were generated whenever the drive started or stopped. The number of particles detected by the condensation nucleus counter depended on sampling parameters including sampling location, shape of sampling probe, and sampling velocity.

  • Performance of the mobile devices, such as Smartphones, is sensible by the early-stage of the execution of the applications. To addressing this issue, the dynamic frequency scaling by the ondemand governor has an inherent weakness by the sampling period that may induces some delay in the execution time of the applications. In this paper, we propose an adaptive sampling method that varying the sampling period of the ondemand governor in accordance with the execution of the applications. By the experiment result, the proposed method outperforms 3.34% in early-stage of the execution time that impacts the sensible performance, and exhibits negligible differences in terms of the energy consumption.

  • This paper deals with establishing correspondent points of feature pints and sampling period when we estimate object motion parameters from image information of freely moving objects in space of gravity-free state. Replacing the inertial coordinate system with the camera coordinate system which is equipped within a space robot, it is investigated to be able to analyze a problem of correspond points from image information, and to obtain sequence of angular velocity $\omega$ which determine a motion of object by means of computer simulation. And if a sampling period ${\Delta}t$ is shortened, the relative errors of angular velocity are increased because the relative errors against moving distance of feature points are increased by quantization. In reverse, if a sampling period ${\Delta}t$ is lengthened too much, the relative error are likewise increased because a sampling period is long for angular velocity to be approximated, and we confirmed the precision that grows according to ascending of resolution.

  • In phase controlled rectifier, it's been known that a fast response is achieved by predictive current control without any overshoot. The frequent sampling period is essential to improve the firing accuracy in conventional predict current control. However, improving the firing accuracy if difficult to reduce the period of sampling efficiently because current sampling and predictive current control is carried out in every period and the ON-OFF current control is performed by comparing two different one. To improve the firing accuracy at the predictive current control, the calculated firing angle is loaded into the high-accuracy hardware timer. So the calculation of exact crossing point between the predictive and actual current is the most important. In this paper, the flow chart for proposed firing angle calculation algorithm is obtained for the fastest current control performance in transient state. The performance of proposed algorithm is verified through simulations and experiments.
