  • The price-dividend ratio is one of the most frequently used financial variables to predict long-horizon stock return. However, the persistency of the price-dividend ratio is found to cause the spuriousness of the stock return prediction regression. The stable relationship between the stock price and the dividend, however, seems to weaken after World War II and to experience structural break. In this paper, we identify a structural change in the cointegrating relationship between the log of the stock price and the log of the dividend. Confirming a structural break in 1962, we subdivide the sample and apply the fully modified estimator to correct for the nonstationarity of the regressor. With the subdivided sample, we exercise the nonparametric bootstrap procedure to derive the empirical distribution of the test statistics and fail to find return predictability in each subsample period.

  • A variable bit rate speech coder is presented. The coder is based on the observation that a speech signal can be viewed as a combination of piecewise linear signals in a short time period. The encoder detects the sample points where the slope of the signal changes, which are called the inflection points in this paper. The coder transmits the location and value for the detected inflection sample, but only the location information for the noninflection samples. In the decoder, the noninflection samples are estimated with interpolation of the received information. Several factors affecting the performance of the coder have been tested through simulation. Simulation results show that the linear interpolation produces 1 ~ 5 dB improvement over the cubic spline interpolation. And the -law companding does not provide any benefit when it is applied before the inflection detection. With low threshold values in the inflection point detection, the coder shows better MOS and more than 16 dB improvement in SNR compared to the continuously variable slope delta modulation (CVSDM).

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study was to predict the selection of independent auditors in the companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE) using a combination of PSO algorithm and CART. This study involves applied research. Design, approach and methodology - The population consisted of all the companies listed on TSE during the period 2005-2010, and the sample included 576 data specimens from 95 companies during six consecutive years. The independent variables in the study were the financial ratios of the sample companies, which were analyzed using two data mining techniques, namely, PSO algorithm and CART. Results - The results of this study showed that among the analyzed variables, total assets, current assets, audit fee, working capital, current ratio, debt ratio, solvency ratio, turnover, and capital were predictors of independent auditor selection. Conclusion - The current study is practically the first to focus on this topic in the specific context of Iran. In this regard, the study may be valuable for application in developing countries.

  • This study was performed to identify the flavor compnenets of Korean Cnidium officinale M.. The extraction of the flavor compounds of Cnidium officinale M. was accomplished by a simultaneous distillation and extraction method using a Likens and Nickerson's extraction apparatus. The concentrated extract was analyzed and identified by gas chromatography and GC-mass spectrometry. The change of the 림팩 contents in each samples was determined in terms of two different storage conditions. The flavor contents of sample at low temperature storage were higher than those at room temperature storage, and increased until storage period of 70 days. The major components of Cnidium officinale M. were terpene compounds including α-pinene, β -selinene, γ-selinene, and phthalides including butylidenephthalide, cnidilide, neocnidilide, senkyunolide A, ligustilide, which are believed to contribute to the characteristic flavor of the Cnidium officinale M.. Especially, great amount of cnidilide and ligustilide was shown in sample of low temperature storage.

  • For bioassay of the various extracts of ginseng, the growth determination method using Saccharomyces cerevisiae which was cultured with various doses of the extracts, was studied The water extract, Powder. and ethanol extract were more effective (about 45∼ 110% increase) than saponins or its fractions (about 20∼35% increase). The cold methanol residue showed a increase effect but it was not significant. The bioassay curves for the water extract, ethanol extract, the butanol extracted saponins and the cold methanol- residue were made from the experimental data. From these curves it is possible to find the relation between dose and effectiveness and the optimal doses of various ginseng extracts, and the amount of extract in a sample can be estimated The .angers of sample amount were 0.01% (100ppm) ∼0.32% (3200ppm) fo. the water extract, 0.025% (150ppm)∼0.1% (1000ppm) for the ethanol extract, and 0.008% (80ppm)∼0.016% (160ppm) for the saponins. It was impossible to determine the range for the cold methanol- residue, The acceleration effects on the cell proliferation by a only 0.0008% (8ppm) of the diol- and triol-saponin were measurable in earlier Period (24 hour treatment).

  • This paper presents the basic concept of a Solid Freeform Fabrication System using a rapid prototyping procedure. The system can fabricate a ceramic model by laser cutting, accumulating, laminating and sintering of each slice. The system is mainly equipped with a laser apparatus, an x-y table, a material transfer system, and an electric oven. The system could fabricate a small object with smooth surface within comparatively short period of time. The system has also shown its effectiveness in terms of the direct application of the object without the secondary mechanical process. The fabricated sample could directly be applied and used to fairly wide practical areas.

  • The rheological properties of some honey-ginseng powder mixturs, used as pharmaceutical pills, were studied extensively by employing five kinds of honey, acacia, chestnut, buckwheat, green perilla and bush clover. Relation between the viscosity of the sample mixtures and the concentrations of ginseng powder and the temperature effect on the internal change of the structure were studied. The results obtained are as follows: 1) A complete gel formation of honey-ginseng mixtures was observed when about 50 days have passed after the sample preparation. 2) The viscosity of honey-ginseng powder mixtures was related with the concentration of ginseng powder, the temperature and the period of time required in gel formation as shown in the following equation. n=noexp$[{\kappa}_{1}c^{n1}+{\kappa}_{2}(T-273)^{-n2}+{\kappa}_{3} t^{n3}]$

  • As high temperature superconductor applications became a reality due to increase in coated conductor performance, it is important to understand their stability behavior to design safe electrical power systems. Coated conductors can be stabilized with different metals and alloys for different types of application, to yield excellent electrical, thermal and mechanical performance. We have experimentally studied the dependence of quench and recovery characteristics of stainless steel stabilized coated conductors on the amplitude of current and duration time. Stability test of 3cm long sample were performed in a liquid nitrogen bath cooling condition by applying a short period over current pulses for 50 and 100ms, with amplitude up to ~6 times the critical current. The transport current that flows before and after the current pulse was fixed at about ~80-85% critical current. We analyzed the quench and recovery phenomena of the test sample using the current voltage characteristic.

  • The paper analyzes and compares the effects of domestic monetary policy using DSGE, DSGE-VAR, and VAR based on a two-country open economy model of Korea and the U.S. According to impulse response analysis, a domestic interest rate hike raises won value in the case of DSGE and DSGE-VAR models, while in the case of the unrestricted VAR model, it lowers won value. In the marginal data density standard, DSGE-VAR (${\mu}=1$) is superior to DSGE or Bayesian VAR over the sample period. Conversely, in the in-sample RMSE criterion, especially for the won/dollar exchange rate, VARs are superior to DSGE or DSGE-VAR. It is necessary to study further if these differences are caused by model misspecification or omitted variable bias.
