  • It is investigated that the surface properties of mercaptopyruvic-acid layer formed on gold surfaces may make an effect on the distribution of either gold particle adsorbed to the zirconia surface or vice versa. For the investigation, the atomic force microscope was used to measure the surface forces between the surfaces as a function of the salt concentration and pH value. The forces were quantitatively analyzed with the derjaguin-landau-verwey-overbeek (DLVO) theory to estimate the electrostatic properties, potential and charge density, of the surfaces for each condition of salt concentration and pH value. The estimatedvalue dependence on the salt concentration was explained with the law of mass action, and the pH dependence was interpreted with the ionizable groups on the surface. The salt concentration dependence of the surface properties, found from the measurement at pH 4 and 8, was predictable from the law. It was found that the mercaptopyruvic-acid layer had higher values for the surface charge densities and potentials than the zirconia surfaces at pH 4 and 8, which may be attributed to the ionizedfunctional-groups of the mercaptopyruvic-acid layer.

  • The irreversible capacities caused by the reduction of solvent on the surface of a negative electrode (KMFC:Kawasaki Mesophase Fine Carbon) were examined during the initial cycle in ethylene carbonate (EC)-diethyl carbonate (DEC) electrolyte solut ions at various concentrations of LiPF6. Chronopotentiograms, linear sweep voltammograms, and impedance spectra clearly showed differences in irreversible capacity and that those differences are related to the concentration of electrolyte during the initial charge. These differences were caused by the amount of solvent decomposition as a function of the concentration of LiPF6 electrolytic salt. The data are discussed with reference to the concentration of electrolytic salt and the properties of passivation film formed by solvent decomposition.

  • Growth curves of seven strains of lactic acid bacteria isolated from Kimchi were graphed, when they were cultivated at 3$0^{\circ}C$ in filter sterilized Chinese cabbage juice containing 0, 2, 4 and 6% salt, and then lag time and generation time were calculated. The shapes of growth curves were changed differently among strains, as salt concentrations were increased. The addition of 2~4% salt resulted in prolongation of lag time were most omspicuous in Leu. Paramesenteroides and Leu. Mesenteroides subsp. Dextranicum, and the next in Leu. Mesenteroides subsp. Mesenteroides,m Lac. Bavaricus and Lac. Gomohiochii, and the least in Lac. Plantarum and Lac. Brevis. And then the prolongations of generation time were most remarkable in Lac. bavaricus and Lac. Homohiochii, and the next in Leu. Mesenteroides subsp. Mesenteroides, Leu. Mesenteroides subsp. Dextranicum and Leu. Paramesenteroides, and the least in Lac. Plantarum and Lac. brevis. By increasing salt concentrations from 0 to 2%, the generation times of Leu. Cesenteroides subsp. Dextranicum and Leu. Mesenteriodes subsp. Mesenteroides were prolonged slightly, while those of Lac. Homohiochii and Lac. Brevis were not changed, and those of Lac. Plantarum, Lac. Bavaricus and Leu. Paramesenteroides were shortened slightly. As salt concentrations were increased from 2% to 4%, inversions in the order of generation time occurred among strains. As a whole, lower salt concentrations were more favorable for the growth of Leuconostoc strains, while higher salt concentrations were for Lactobacillus strains.

  • For the development of a large-scale dialysis process for silk fibroin solution, a batch and continuous dialysis chamber was designed and built, which are to be used as a unit module for the process. A series of dialysis experiments were carried out to estimate the kinetic parameters for dialysis using the solutions of salt-solubilized silk fibroin. The solution was dialyzed by distilled water either batch-wise or continuously. Dialysis kinetics was monitored by measuring refractometery at high salt concentration and conductivity at lower salt concentration. The apparent dialysis coefficients were $5.4g/m^2-hr$ and $1.8g/m^2-hr$, for well mixed batch and continuous dialysis, respectively. The alteration of molecular weight distribution of dialyzed silk fibroin solution was monitored.

  • Solubilization of bovine serum albumin(BSA) is performed using a reverse micellar system consisting of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate(AOT). Of particular, effects of pH, salt concentration and its type on the solubilization are investigated by means of the phase-transfer method. One of significant findings in our study is that the protein is to a large extent aggregated in the interface between organic and aqueous phases at lower pH and small salt concentration. In this presentation, the optimal extraction process conditions for BSA, which is bulky, are proposed.

  • The electrorefining experiments with an anode composed of U, Y, Gd, Nd and Ce (or U, Gd, Dy and Ce) were carried out in the KC1-LiCl eutectic melt at $500^{\circ}C$, Uranium was the major component in the cathode deposits at the high initial uranium concentration, and the separation factors of the uranium with respect to the rare earths (REs) were calculated according to the applied voltage and the uranium concentration in the molten salt. The current efficiency was inversely in proportion to the applied voltage in the range of 1.0 V to 1, 9 V (vs. STS304L). The dependency of the applied voltage on the current efficiency as well as the deposition rate was discussed in terms of the microstructural feature and crystal structure of the deposit.

  • The characteristics of cobalt oxide powders prepared by hot petroleum drying method from the cobalt acetate were evaluated by DTA/TGA, XRD, BET, SEM and density measurement. The cobalt oxide powder could be prepared by hot petroleum drying of the emulsion of cobalt acetate salt solution and the subsequent thermal decomposition of the acetate at 300$^{\circ}C$. As the concentration of the salt solution and the calcination temperature of the dried powder increased, the surface area of the synthesized powder decreased due to the particle growth, so that after sintering the density and grain size decreased. For the same concentration of the salt solution, the surface area and sinterability of the powder by hot petroleum drying increased in comparision with those by conventional drying.

  • Rhizobium japonicum was isolated from the nodule of soybean root grown at the reclaimed tidal land in Kang-Wha island. The effect of pH and salt concentration to the viability of the isolated strain were examined in relationship between microbial growth and accumulation of PHB. Optimal pH value for the good viability of the isolated strain was 7.0 and also, at 5.0 and 6.0 viability was favorable to large extent, but 9.0 was unfavorable. Examined the effect of salt concentration treated two times as of the salinity in the reclaimed tidal land, viability of the isolated strain showed about 30 to 40%. And also in treatment with NaCl(40g/l) whatever the pH value adopted, viability was mostly less than 10%. The amount of accumulated PHB was relatively high at low pH value(5-6) and at high salt concentrration, respectively.

  • Hypocotyl-derived callus cultures of Brassica pekinensis cv. Chungseng were grown on Murashige-Skoog medium containing NaCl, Na2SO4 and mannitol to clarify the effect of salts on callus growth, proline accumulation and water relations. Na2SO4 was more inhibitory than NaCl when survival rate, growth and fresh:dry weight ratios of established callus were measured. Fresh weight in 0.25% NaCl treatment was more than twice as increasable in comparison to the same concentration of Na2SO4 or control. Proline concentration was increased on either salt, attained at highest levels at the 5th subculture, and fluctuated as affected by both salts or mannitol. Concentrations of redeucing sugars were sharply increased after 2 or 3 times of subculture and decreased by increasing subculture. The water and osmotic potential in callus reached a maximum negative value after two weeks in culture, regardless of salt type and mannitol and tugor remained relatively constant on both salt and mannitol treatments.
