  • In order to investigate the temporal variability of dissolved and particulate trace metals in the Han River, water samples were collected intermittently at two sites for 3 years (August 91 to December 94). Surface seawaters covering the range of salinity were also collected at the estuarine region to evaluate the role of estuary for the riverine fluxes of trace metals within the estuary during October 95 and 96. During the study period, dissolved metal concentrations in riverwaters varied by a factor of 5-10 for Fe, Ni, Co and Cu and 50-100 for Mn, Cd and Pb depending upon the water level; high concentration during the low water and low concentration in high water period except for Fe. The concentration of dissolved Fe increased with increasing water discharge. These concentration-discharge relationships of the studied trace metals are explained by the successive dilution of waters from two different origins, which can be presumably identified as anthropogenic discharges and watershed flushing. Although estuarine waters at early mixing region were not collected due to the difficulty of sampling, mixing behaviors of metals were inferred from the concentration-salinity relationships through the laboratory mixing experiment and field sampling, and distribution coefficients between dissolved and labile particulate phases. It is suggested that the Han River estuary plays a role of accumulating Fe, Mn, Co and Pb from riverine sources due to high turbidity caused by strong tidal current, whereas this system serves as a source of dissolved Cd due to release caused by extended residence time of riverine particles.

  • A comparison was made between the chlorophyll a and suspended solid (SS) retrievals from OSMI and SeaWiFS sensor to chlorophyll a and SS values determined with the standard method during the NFRDI's research cruises. The percentage of organic and inorganic materials from the SS was calculated to study the contribution of turbid water in the northern part of the East China Sea. The open sea waters in the Kuroshio regions of the East China Sea showed relatively higher concentration of volatile SS. However, towards the northwestern part of the East China Sea, the situation became much more optically different with the non-volatile SS from the Yangtze river and the sea bottom sources in the sea in winter and spring seasons. Furthermore, in order to indirectly detect low salinity water with high turbidity, which related to the Yangtze river using remote sensed data from the satellites, a comparison between the results of the band ratio(nLw 490nm/nLw 555nm) of SeaWiFS (OSMI) and the distribution of low salinity around the Jeju Island was presented.

  • SEAWAT, a linked modeling program of Visual MODFLOW was used to analyze the change in groundwater levels and salinity related groundwater dam construction in Cheongsan island, Wando-Gun, Jeollanam-Do. The steady-state model results show the groundwater flow and salinity distribution of the studied area. The groundwater flows from north-west and south-east highlands into the river, located in the middle part of the basin, and is eventually discharged to the ocean. Part of the sea water infiltrates into the river; and through the estuary's alluvium aquifer, the sea water intrusion takes place spreading to about 830 m from the ocean. The transient model results show that after the groundwater dam construction, groundwater levels will rise to a maximum of 2.0 m upstream, and the groundwater storage will increase 21,000 after 10 years. Meanwhile 31% of the total area affected by sea water intrusion will decrease. To conclude, the groundwater dam is a very useful method for a secure water resource in preparation for drought and water shortages in the island regions.

  • This study analyzes guidelines to select optimum number of grids to represent behavior of a given water system appropriately. The EFDC model was chosen as a 3-D hydrodynamic and water quality model and salt was chosen as a surrogate variable of pollutant. The model is applied to an artificial canal that receives salt water from coastal area and fresh water from a river from respective gate according to previously developed gate operation rule. Grids are subdivided in vertical and horizontal (longitudinal) directions, respectively until no significant changes are found in salinity concentrations. The optimum grid size was determined by comparing errors in average salt concentrations between a test grid systems against the most complicated grid system. MSE (mean squared error) and MAE (mean absolute error) are used to compare errors. The CFL (Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy) number was used to determine the optimum number of grid systems for the study site though it can be used when explicit numerical method is applied only. This study suggests errors seem acceptable when both MSE and MAE are less than unity approximately.

  • This study was carried out to investigate phytoplankton distributions and water properties at 6 sampling places in Yongsan lake during the period from Jun. 30 to Nov. 17, 1991.Results obtained were as follows: 1. At sampled sites, BOD value ranges from 1.0~14.0 mg/l except Sangmongtan where it was 14.0 mg/l on Nov. 17. 2. T-N and T-P were generally high and the former was 0.26~1.42 mg/l, the latter 0.010~0.158mg/l. 3. At all sampled places, salinity was in the range of 0.04~0.57% but especially downstream of Yongsan lake was high, 0.39~0.57% on Oct. 27. 4. The phytoplankton identification in this survey period showed Cyanophyceae is 11 genera 14 species, Bacillariophyceae 13 genera 22 species, Chlorophyceae 30 genera 55 species: total 54 genera 91 species. 5. Dominant species were Anacystis aeruginosa, Lyngbya contorta, Anabeana Sp, Melosira granulata, Melosira granulata var. angustissima, Dictyosphaerium pulchellurn and Actinastrurn hantzschii var. fiuviatile during the period from summer to fall. 6. Lyngbya contorta was seemed to adapt to the circumstance of low transparency. 7. Phytoplankton distributions were seemed to be influenced by salinity and thransparency. And so they might appear much fewer in the downstream than the upperstream in Yongsan lake.

  • In order to investigate seasonal variations of the physical environments in the region of Jinhae Bay-Nakdongpo, we carried out hydrographic surveys from November 2000 to November 2001. Horizontal and vertical distribution of salinity and temperature shows large seasonal variations. Water column is well mixed in winter and stratified in summer. Low-salinity water is distributed in the form of patches because of the drainage control at the Nakdong River. Seasonal variations in the sea near Gadeok-Sudo are affected by topography, river discharge and tidal current. Currents have been measured using a bottom mounted ADCP and DCM12 between November 2000 and August 2001 in the Gadeok-Sudo. The current in the Gadeok-Sudo shows a distinct two-layer structure with reversed current. Low-pass filtered time series of wind, sea elevation and current are coherent for the period of 1-2 days and are attributed to Ekman-like dynamics. Spatial and temporal circulation pattern shows a slight different. The subtidal current in Jinhae Bay goes northward, however is reversed in the Gadeok-Sudo mouth.

  • Marine algal flora and community structure were investigated seasonally at four stations in Busan, in which coastal area and estuary affected by Nakdong river are involved, from February 2011 to October 2011. Total 78 species including 9 of cholophyta, 17 of phaeophyta and 52 of rhodophyta were found during the study period. Maximum and minimum species number were recorded at station 1(57 species) and at 3(32 species). As based on the cluster analysis, grouping pattern between the four stations was significantly affected by season and Nakdong river run off. At station 3 directly exposured on Nakdong river run off, species diversity was relatively low and dominant species were similar throughout four seasons. However, coverage at the station was relatively high because of Ulva bloom. This difference results from salinity and nitrates concentrations closely related with river runoff controlled according to precipitation. Marine algal coverage was high at lower salinity and higher nitrate concentration. In conclusion, the spatio-temporal distribution of benthic marine algae in estuary of Nakdong river was mainly determined by the precipitation and river run off with the seasons, whereas that in coastal area was seasonally affected by general physical, chemical, biological and dynamic factors.
