Effect of Web-supported Health Education on Knowledge of Health and Healthy-living Behaviour of Female Staff in a Turkish University

  • Background: Once limited with face-to face courses, health education has now moved into the web environment after new developments in information technology This study was carried out in order to give training to the university academic and administrative female staff who have difficulty in attending health education planned for specific times and places. The web-supported training focuses on healthy diet, the importance of physical activity, damage of smoking and stress management. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in Sakarya University between the years 2012-2013 as a descriptive and quasi experimental study. The sample consisted of 30 participants who agreed to take part in the survey, filled in the forms and completed the whole training. The data were collected via a "Personel Information Form", "Health Promotion Life-Style Profile (HPLSP)", and "Multiple Choice Questionnaire (MCQ). Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the total points from "Health Promotion Life-Style Profile" and the total points from the sub-scale after and before the training (t=3.63, p=0.001). When the points from the multiple choice questionnaire after and before training were compared, it was seen that the average points were higher after the training (t=8.57, p<0.001). Conclusions: It was found that web-supported health training has a positive effect on the healthy living behaviour of female staff working at a Turkish university and on their knowledge of health promotion.

Thermo mechanical analysis of a ceramic coated piston used in a diesel engine

  • The aim of this paper is to determine temperature and stress distributions in a ceramic based on Partially Stabilized Zirconia coated steel piston crown by using plasma spraying for improving performance of a marine diesel engine. Effects of coating constituent and thickness on temperature and stress distributions were investigated including comparisons with results from an uncoated piston by means of finite element method namely ANSYS. Temperature developed at the coated surface is significantly higher than that of the uncoated piston. The maximum stress components occur between bond coat and adjacent ceramic layer. Provided that coating thickness is constant as 0.5 mm, when numbers of layers increase, magnitude of the normal stress decrease about 34.1% on the base metal surface according to uncoated piston, but the base metal surface temperature of the steel piston increase about 13.1%.

  • Let Q and R be the well-known matrices associated with Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, and k, m, and n be any integers. It is mainly established all solutions of the matrix equations c1Qn + c2Qm = Qk, c1Qn + c2Qm = RQk, and c1Qn + c2RQm = Qk with unknowns c1, c2 ∈ ℂ*. Moreover, using the obtained results, it is presented many identities, some of them are available in the literature, and the others are new, related to the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers.

Prevalence of Clostridium difficile Isolated from Beef and Chicken Meat Products in Turkey

  • The concern about the possibility of food can be a vehicle for the transmission of Clostridium difficile to humans has been raised recently due to the similarities among the strains isolated from patients, foods and food animals. In this study, therefore, the prevalence of C. difficile was investigated in beef and chicken meat products collected from 57 different butcher shops, markets and fast food restaurants in Sakarya province of Turkey. Two out of 101 samples (1.98%) was positive for C. difficile indicating a very low prevalence. The pathogen was isolated from an uncooked meatball sample and a cooked meat $d{\ddot{o}}ner$ sample, whereas not detected in chicken meat samples. The meatball isolate was resistant to vancomycin and tetracycline, while the cooked meat $d{\ddot{o}}ner$ isolate was resistant to vancomycin and metronidazole. Both isolates were sensitive to moxifloxacin and clindamycin. Toxins A and B were not detected. This study reveals the presence of C. difficile in further processed beef products in Turkey.

  • In this work, a method is given to construct quantum codes from cyclic codes over F4 + vF4 which will be denoted as R throughout the paper, where v2 = v and a Gray map is defined between R and where F4 is the field with 4 elements. Some optimal quantum code parameters and others will be presented at the end of the paper.

  • In this paper, we study on spinors with two hyperbolic components. Firstly, we express the hyperbolic spinor representation of a spacelike curve dened on an oriented (spacelike or time-like) surface in Minkowski space ${\mathbb{R}}^3_1$. Then, we obtain the relation between the hyperbolic spinor representation of the Frenet frame of the spacelike curve on oriented surface and Darboux frame of the surface on the same points. Finally, we give one example about these hyperbolic spinors.

Effectiveness of diagonal shear reinforcement on reinforced concrete short beams

  • In the study, an experimental and numerical study is performed to investigate the efficiency of diagonal shear reinforcement (DSR) on reinforced concrete (RC) short beams. For this purpose, 7 RC short beam specimens were tested under a 4-point loading, and a numerical study is conducted by using finite element method. Additionally, the efficiency of addition of DSR to specimens is observed in the experimental study together with the increase in stirrup spacing. Analysis results are compared in terms of load-displacement behavior and failure modes. As a result of the study, a significant improvement both in shear and displacement capacities of the RC short beams are achieved along with addition of DSR in short beams. Moreover, it is deduced from the numerical results that increasing both the diameter and yield strength of DSR makes a significant contribution to the shear capacity and ductility of shear critical RC members.

  • In this study, tubular surfaces that play an important role in technological designs in various branches are examined for the case of the base curve is not satisfying the fundamental theorem of the differential geometry. In order to give an alternative perspective to the researches on tubular surfaces, the modified orthogonal frame is used in this study. Firstly, the relationships between the Serret-Frenet frame and the modified orthogonal frame are summarized. Then the definitions of the tubular surfaces, some theorems, and results are given. Moreover, the fundamental forms, the mean curvature, and the Gaussian curvature of the tubular surface are calculated according to the modified orthogonal frame. Finally, the properties of parameter curves of the tubular surface with modified orthogonal frame are expressed and the tubular surface is drawn according to the Frenet frame and the modified orthogonal frame.

  • In this study, some new relations between generalized Fibonacci numbers and matrices are given. The work is designed in three stages: Firstly, it is obtained a relation between generalized Fibonacci numbers and integer powers of the matrices X satisfying the relation X2 = pX +qI, and also, many results are derived from obtained relation. Then, it is established more general relation between generalized Fibonacci numbers and the square matrices X satisfying the condition X2 = VnX - (-q)nI. Finally, some applications and numerical examples related to the obtained results are given.

  • In this paper, we study the instantaneous geometric properties of motion of rigid bodies in the Lorentzian plane. For this purpose we define Lorentzian form of Bottemas instantaneous invariants. In these regards, we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition of a Lorentzian plane to be at Cardan position with respect to these invariants.
