  • This paper describes the tracking algorithm performance evaluation for autonomous vehicle using a safety envelope based path. As the level of autonomous vehicle technologies evolves along with the development of relevant supporting modules including sensors, more advanced methodologies for path generation and tracking are needed. A safety envelope zone, designated as the obstacle free regions between the roadway edges, would be introduced and refined for further application with more detailed specifications. In this paper, the performance of the path tracking algorithm based on the generated path would be evaluated under safety envelop environment. In this process, static obstacle map for safety envelope was created using Lidar based vehicle information such as current vehicle location, speed and yaw rate that were collected under various driving setups at Seoul National University roadways. A level of safety was evaluated through CarSim simulation based on paths generated with two different references: a safety envelope based path and a GPS data based one. A better performance was observed for tracking with the safety envelop based path than that with the GPS based one.

  • It is well known that the peak strength envelope of geomaterials with no cohesion, such as sand, gravel and rockfill, exhibits significant curvature over a range of stresses. In a practical design of slope, however, the linear Mohr-Coulomb's failure envelope is used as a failure criterion and consequently gives inaccurate safety factors, especially for some ranges of small normal stresses on shallow failure surfaces. Necessity of a nonlinear shear strength envelope in slope stability analysis is on this point. Hence, this study describes how to evaluate nonlinear shear strength of gravel fill materials using the results of large triaxial tests under consolidated-drained condition, and compares the safety factors from slope stability analyses for a homogeneous gravel fill or rockfill embankment incorporating the non-linearity of strength, so as to show its effects on safety factors.

  • Ball bearings are one of main components that support the rotational shaft in high speed rotary machinery. So, it is very important to detect the incipient faults and fault growth of bearing since the damage and failure of bearing can cause a critical failures or accidents of machinery system. In the past, many researchers mainly performed to detect the bearing fault using traditional method such as wavelet, statistics, envelope etc in vibration signals. But study on the detection technique for bearing fault growth has a little been performed. In this paper, we verified the possibility for monitoring of fault growth and detection of fault size in bearing outer-race by using the envelope powerspectrum and probabilistic density function from measured vibration signals.

  • Marine production strings are continuously affected by unstable internal fluid during operation. In this paper, the structural governing equation for marine production string self-induced vibration is constructed. A finite element analysis model is established based on Euler-Bernoulli theory and solved by the Newmark method. Furthermore, based on reliability theory, a self-design procedure is developed to determine the operability envelope for marine production string self-induced vibration. Case studies show: the response frequency of the production strings is consistent with the excitation frequency under harmonic fluctuation and mainly determined by the first-order natural frequency under stochastic fluctuation. The operability envelope for marine production string self-induced vibration is a near symmetrical trapezium. With the increasing of natural gas output, the permissible fluctuation coefficient dramatically decreases. A reasonable centralizer spacing, increasing top tension, and controlling natural gas output are of great significance to the risk control in marine production string operation.

  • An envelope protection system is a control system that allows a submarine to operate freely using its own operational envelope without exceeding the structural limit, dynamic limit, and control input limit. In this paper, an envelope protection system for the pitch angle of a submarine is designed using a dynamic trim algorithm. A linear quadratic regulator and artificial neural network are used for the true dynamics approximation. A submarine maneuvering simulation program developed using experimental data is used to validate the designed envelope protection system. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the designed envelope protection system.

  • This study aimed to compare the primary heating energy consumption of regional apartment houses based on the enhanced thermal insulation performance of building envelope standards. The difference of the heating energy consumption based on the enhanced thermal insulation performance of building envelope standards in the southern region, the largest regional difference in primary heating energy consumption, is $10.3kWh/(m^2{\cdot}year)$. The difference of the heating energy consumption based on the enhanced thermal insulation performance of building envelope standards in the central region is $8.0{\sim}8.5kWh/(m^2{\cdot}year)$ and that of the Jeju region is $0.5kWh/(m^2{\cdot}year)$. These energy consumption differences do not result in building energy efficiency ratings changing. The building energy efficiency ratings have the possibility to be changed.

  • Safety operational envelope (SOE) is the area which guarantees the safety of a submarine from the accident such as jamming and flooding. The maximum safe depth is set to prevent the damage to the hull from increasing water pressure with depth. A minimum safety depth is set to prevent a submarine from the exposure above the free surface and collision against surface ship. The prediction method for the SOE in the design phase is needed to operate the submarine safely. In this paper, the modeling and calculation methods of the SOE are introduced. Main ballast tank blowing modeling and propeller force modeling are conducted to simulate the accidents and the recovery process. The SOEs are established based on the crash stop and emergency rising maneuver simulation. From the simulation results, it can be known that the emergency rising maneuver is more effective recovery action than the crash stop.

  • Most large commercial aircrafts and high performance military aircrafts use fly-by-wire (FBW) or fly-by-light systems to improve their controllability, comfort, and safety. A flight envelope protection technique is used with flight control systems utilizing the FBW technique. Such flight envelope protection systems prevent these aircraft from exceeding the structural/aerodynamic limits and control their surface limits. This is accomplished by predicting the values of the future state variables and adaptively compensating the control action. In this study, the conventional dynamic trim algorithm of the flight envelope protection is modified to increase the method accuracy and to handle cases with multiple variables. Numerical simulation is also performed to verify the performance of the proposed method.

  • As Building Integrated Photovoltaic(BIPV) system replaces the conventional building finishing materials with PV modules, two function of electricity generation and building envelope can be expected. Therefore BIPV can be a good alternative technology for the 21 century environment-friendly buildings. The objective of this paper is to develope BIPV modules for a commercial buildings of which structure is mainly light-weight, curtain wall system. Two types of module are developed for a opaque part and a transparent part of building envelope. Current technology level and market status of Korea determines the configuration of developed BIPV modules. Architectural considerations for the integration of PV module to building envelope such as building structure, construction type, safety, regulation, maintenance etc. have been carefully reflected from the early stage of BIPV module design. Especially the survey result of current building envelope materials determines the size of unit BIPV modules and a unique cladding method for PV module installation is developed. Trial product of BIPV modules and cladding hardwares are manufactured and sample construction details for a demonstration building are proposed.

  • This paper presents a molten salt reactor (MSR) design parameter sensitivity study using a nodal dynamic modelling methodology with explicitly modified point kinetics equation and Mann's model for heat transfer. Six parameters that can impact MSR safety are evaluated. A MATLAB-Simulink model inspired by Thorcon's 550MWth MSR is used for parameter evaluations. A safety envelope was formed to encapsulate power, maximum and minimum temperature, and temperature-induced reactivity feedback. The parameters are perturbed by ±30%. The parameters were then ranked by their subsequent impact on the considered safety envelope, which ranks acceptable parameter uncertainty. The model is openly available on GitHub.
