Analysis on Running Safety for KTX Vehicle (KTX차량의 주행 안전성 해석)

  • Lateral vibration at the tail of KTX train was found during the acceptance test. In order to settle the problem of lateral vibration, the wheel conicity was changed 1/40 to 1/20. However, we should evaluate the running safety of vehicle with 1/20 wheel conicity because modification of wheel conicity may cause the running performance to be worse and critical speed to reduce. In this paper, we calculate critical speed of KTX bogie as wheel conicity increase and analyze the running safety for KTX that has 20 car trainset formation using VAMPIRE. and compare with the test results of KHST to validate analysis results on high speed line. A analysis results show that critical speed of 0.3 wheel conicity is over 375km/h and curving performance of 1/20wheel conicity is better than 1/40. Also, we examinate the running performance of KTX to check out possibility to increase speed of KTX on conventional line. A analysis results show that it is possible to increase up to 10% the speed of KTX on tangent line but KTX on a curved line should be operated with the speed of conventional train.

Estimation of Traffic Safety Improvement by Applying a Traffic Control Device (교통통제장치 적용에 따른 교통안전도 향상에 관한 연구)

  • Speeding is one of the major causes of traffic accidnets in urban areas. Driver feedback sign(DFS) is a traffic control device that can be used for many traffic environments including work zones, school zones, and roadways. In this paper, the effectiveness of DFS was evaluated through a field study using speed data collected from before and after study periods. In addition traffic safety improvement was also quantitatively estimated using the variance of speed data collected. Staistical test results showed that the speed difference was statistically significant, and the distribution of speed data was also shifted greatly. Therefore, it was concluded that installing the DFS in roadways might lead to unifomity of speed of traffic flow, thus, potential safety improvement might be expected.

Research for the Method of Design Consistency Evaluation Using Individual Driving Behavior (개별차량의 주행행태를 이용한 설계일관성 평가 방법에 관한 연구)

  • This study has been developed the way that evaluates the road safety using the speed of individual vehicles at curve sections in 2-lane rural highways. For this study, we developed variation of operational speed for the individual vehicle using the speed of vehicles in 96points of selected roads. Drawing out of variation of operational speed for the individual vehicle, estimation models for speed variation of individual vehicles considering horizontal alignments and vertical alignments of the roads have been developed. These models presents the way to evaluate road safety out of the operational speed and acceleration of individual vehicles. Considering safety and based on the results of these study above, some regular spots are ranked by "good", "fair", "bad". The results that this study showed in this paper could be useful to derive some particular spots that needs to be improve in terms of safety.

  • The Electronic Interlocking unit in railway signalling system is safety-related facilities to determine route and speed for train running. In particular, the SSI(Solid State Interlocking) is Electronic Interlocking unit for high-speed railway, and it performs safety-critical function by MPM(Micro-Processor Module). Meanwhile, MPM is composed of the PES(Programmable Electronic System)-based system, and the PES-based system in railway safety-related facilities should be implemented by complying with the safety requirements defined in IEC 62425 and IEC 61508. In this paper, we performed modeling of failure rate and reliability for MPM implemented by fault tolerance methods and analyzed functional safety for MPM. Moreover, we determined SIL(Safety Integrity Level) for MPM according to the safety requirements defined in IEC 61508 based on an analyzed functional safety.

Study on Algorithm of High-Speed Scanning System for Railway Vehicle Running Units Using High Performance Camera (고성능 카메라를 이용한 철도차량 주행장치용 고속스케닝시스템 알고리즘에 관한 연구)

  • It is necessary to apply a non-contact high-speed scanning system that can measure in real time in order to prevent the dropping and deformation of the main parts of railway vehicles during high-speed running. Recently, research on a scanning system that detects the deformation state of main parts from a video image taken using a high-performance camera has been actively pursued. In this study, we researched an analysis algorithm of a high-speed scanning system that uses a high-performance camera to monitor the deformation and drop-out state of the main components of the running units equipment in real time.

Speed Up Test on conventional Line by using Korean High Speed Train(HSR-350x) (한국형 고속 전철을 활용한 기존선 속도향상 고찰)

  • KTX has started commercial service from Seoul to Busan and Mokpo since April 1, 2004. The service line is composed of new-high speed line and conventional line. Before KTX is runs, the maximum operational speed on conventional line was 140km/h. In order to reduce the traveling time, operation speed of KTX must be increased on the conventional line. So, we performed test running with prototype HSR-350x and verification of safety was made in $10\%$ speed-up. Korean High Speed Train HSR-350x) was developed by G7 - R&D project. In this study, in safety aspect, several technical reviews are introduced and the possibility for reduction of traveling time is investigated on the conventional line by using HSR-350x.

A Study on the Bow Collapse of High-Speed Passenger Craft in Collision with Bridge Pier (고속 여객선의 교각 충돌에 대한 연구)

  • During the last 10 years, the various type of high speed craft have been greatly developed, and since around of 1990 the large size of high speed passenger and/or cargo vessels are also introduced and took into the service in the various routes over the world. In a marine traffic way some bridge need to build across a rivers, cannals or a waterways. This one will be an obstruction and potential risk of collision in the way of high speed craft. Accordingly some of collision accident have been reported, which were caused by a lost control, wind and hydrodynamic forces, fog or human errors. In this paper a high speed craft having 40 m length is assumed to be collided with a circular type of bridge piers at right angle. The mode of deformation, penetration depth of collapse, impact forces, reduction of speed, loss of kinetic energy, and influence of scantlings, etc. have been calculated in each speed with a time variation to find a maximum values within a limit, and are graphically presented.

Highway Design Speed and Its Impacts: Some Evidence in South Korea

  • In an effort to increase the operational efficiency of highways, South Korea has been increasing its design speed recently. However, the use of higher design speed will also increase construction costs. Moreover, increasing the design speed is expected to have an impact on safety. Hence, there is a strong need to demonstrate that the benefits outweigh the cost of having a higher design speed. This study surveyed a sample of design engineers to determine their awareness of the consequences of increasing design speed and their assessment of the right design speed for an actual rural arterial. In addition to the survey, a case study of three recently upgraded highways was conducted to determine the changes in traffic volumes, speeds, travel times, and safety.

Application of Light Collecting Probe with High Spatial Resolution to Spark-Ignited Spherical Spray Flames (불꽃점화 구형분무화염에서 고공간 분해능을 가진 집광프로브의 응용)

  • In order to obtain the flame Propagation speed in freely falling droplet suspension Produced by an ultrasonic atomizer, a light collecting probe named Multi-color Integrated Cassegrain Receiving Optics (MICRO) is applied to spark-ignited spherical spray flames. Two MICRO probes are used to monitor time-series signals of OH chemilumine-scence from two different locations in the flame. The flame propagation speed is calculated by detecting the arrival time difference of the propagating flame front. In addition, time-series images of OH chemiluminescence are simultaneously obtained by a high-speed digital CCD camera to ensure the validity of the MICRO system. Furthermore, relationship between the spray properties measured by phase Doppler anemometer (PDA) and the flame propagation speed are discussed with k different experimental conditions by changing the fuel injection rate. It was confirmed that the MICRO probe system was very useful and convenient to obtain the flame propagation speed and that the flame propagation speed was different depending on the spray properties.

  • Forming characteristics of tailored blank are mostly effected by the welding method. Recently, laser welding is widely used for the tailored blank. However, tensile and forming characteristics vary due to welding conditions such as welding speed, heat flux etc. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effect of welding speed on the tensile and forming characteristics of laser welded tailored blank. For this purpose, tailored blank specimens with different welding speed were prepared and tensile tests were performed. Also forming tests such as LDH and OSU test, were performed to evaluate the effect of welding speed on the forming characteristics. Finally, forming limit diagrams were obtained for different welding speed.
