Pedestrian injury have been the most important cause of death in children 1 to 14 years of age. This study was attempted to analyze the status and factors of the pedestrian safety education for primary school children. The purpose of this study was to provide the baseline study on pedestrian safety education. The data were collected from 313 respondents of 5th grade elementary school children in Seoul during April 26 through May 6, 1993. The data were cross tabulated for percent distribution and analyzed by multiple regression using SAS for personal computer program package. Major findings are as follows: (1) 50% of the respondents had never received any safety education for Pedestrian. The primary provider of pedestrian safety education was parent. (2) Respondents' knowledge on traffic rules, traffic signals, natures of motor vehicle is high(above 88%). (3) Respondents are very negative to the attitude of playing on the street and transversing under d1e overpass(about 80%). (4) 58% of respondents had never played on the street and 49% of respondents had never run on the street. (5) Factors affecting the knowledge of traffic safety was respondents' sex and job of their mothers(p<0.05). (6) Factors affecting the attitude of traffic safety was economic status(p<0.01). (7) Factors affecting the practice of traffic safety was education of respondents' fathers. (8) The multiple regression analysis showed that sex was statistically significant in affecting traffic accident of pedestrians (p=0.05). In order to prevent children's traffic accidents, education for pedestrians' safety by both parents and teachers should be strengthened.

In accordance with ICAO SARPs, the states should implement appropriate aviation-related health promotion for airmen subject to an aviation medical examination to reduce future medical risks to flight safety. We aimed to analyze the results of the aviation medical examination to use as objective evidence for establishing an aviationrelated health promotion plan. The results of the final issuance of airmen medical certificate from 2015~2017 were collected from the e-sky computer system. The 30 cases (0.3%) in 2015, 22 cases (0.2%) in 2016, 38 cases (0.3%) in 2017 were unfit for flight duty. The 34 unfit out of the total 90 cases were renewal physical examinations. The cardiovascular disease was most commonly in 11 cases, followed by 8 tumors, 4 psychiatric diseases, 3 ophthalmic diseases, 2 respiratory diseases, 2 neurologic diseases, 2 otolaryngological diseases, 1 endocrine disease and 1 digestive disease. The results of this study can be used as objective data in aviation-related health promotion plan. The health promotion activities based on objective data can contribute to improving aviation safety by improving the lifestyles of airmen.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to create the deveopment plan for promotion of advanced disaster-safety awareness, which is noted as a major factor in the large disaster. Method: This study is to conduct theoretical review with regard to disaster management and safety awareness. Consciousness surveys on safety awareness and previous disaster case was analyzed to derive the cause of the disaster, and the development plan for promotion of advanced disaster-safety awareness was suggested. Result: In the survey on the public's sense of safety on the disaster management evaluation, 'Response' stage was well performed, but the 'Recovery' stage was not. Especially, it was found that disaster safety education at the 'Prevention' stage was very lacking. In the survey on the public's safety awareness, the awareness level of the evacuation facility was very low, information on infectious diseases and collapse accident was insufficient. Especially, it has been found that the awareness on safety regulation in daily life is very insufficient. Through the case study on previous disaster(COVID-19, Fire in Miryang Sejong Hospital, Forest fire in the east coas at 2004'), it was derived that the lack of safety awareness(such as safety insensitivity) was the main factor of the expansion of the damage scale. Conclusion: The development plan for promotion of advanced disaster-safety awareness are as follow. First, it is necessary to spread the safety culture movement through the expansion of safety education and safety promotion. Second, disaster confrontation training for the public should be implemented to improve the effectiveness of disaster response. Finally, it is necessary to change the individual awareness on safety. When these factors are implemented systematically, advanced disaster-safety awareness can be promoted. Ultimately, disaster accidents in our society can be reduced.
Objectives: The purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of participatory road safety education program for the lower grade in elementary schools. This program was developed based on the Activated Health Education model. Methods: Study design was compromise experimental group pre-post design. 456 students in 8 schools were nonrandomly assigned to study group(n=224) or control(n=232). The students finished self-administered questionnaire before and after education. Collected data was analyzed by using the SPSS. Results: 1. The common relevant factors in road safety knowledge and attitude were 'residential state' and 'experience of traffic accident'. 2. The knowledge showed that the case and control scored at 6.48 and 6.41 points before. After this intervention, the case and control scored at 8.38 and 6.51. The difference of the case was significant(p<0.001). 3. The attitude showed that the case and control scored at 19.67 and 19.63 before. After this, the case and control scored at 19.86 and 19.63. The difference of the case was significant(p<0.05). Conclusion: In order to implement the road safety education, children's socio-demographic characteristics were considered. Because this education was effective in both improving knowledge and attitude and bringing interest, various participatory program will be applied in road safety education for children.
Objectives: More than 80% of unintentional injury was related to risk-taking behaviors involved in child accidents. Therefore, diverse care and concerns on safety should be provided from teachers as well as parents to build child safety behaviors. The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of safety concerns from students, teachers, and parents on elementary students' safety behaviors in Korea. Methods: The 5th and 6th grade students participated in this study in 14 elementary schools in Korea and the total number of students was 1,033. The study schools were selected by the stratified cluster sampling method throughout 7 metropolitan areas in Korea. Data were collected by the self-administered survey and the questionnaires were delivered to the vice-principals of the designated schools by ground postal service and the vice-principals conducted survey data collection. The questions on students' safety concerns, teachers' safety concerns, parents' safety concerns, safety practices, safety education, and demographics were included in the survey. All survey responses were encoded into SPSS program and t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were utilized. Results: The students taking accidents one time more per year were more than 60% and the two thirds of them recognized that their accidents were due to their risk behaviors. Parents' education on safety practices was more frequent than teachers' education; furthermore, teachers' concerns on safety behaviors were poorer than students' or parents' concerns. In terms of safety behaviors, the scores of fire and home-related safety behavior were high but the scores of traffic and bicycle, in particular, helmet wearing practice were low. Three concerns from students, parents, and teachers all were significantly related to children's safety behaviors. Conclusions: In conclusion, safety concerns from the close networks are the important indicator of child safety behaviors and, the safety training programs, therefore, for parents and teachers as well as for students need to be developed for improving children's safe behaviors.
Childhood injuries are the primary cause of death and disability among children aged 5 to 14. Consistent practice of learned safety behaviors can reduce the occurrence of severe injuries among children. However, safety behavior concern is low among Korean-American children specifically and American children, in general. The objective of the study is to evaluate the impact of an unintentional injury prevention curriculum, Risk Watch among Korean-American children. A quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group was used for the designed of the study. Two intervention and two control Korean schools in Atlanta participated in this study. The intervention consisted of weekly lessons in traffic, bicycle, pedestrian, and fire safety. One hundred and two students completed a pre-test and a post-test. The main outcomes were safety behaviors (seat belt use or helmet use), behavioral intentions, and safety knowledge. Analysis of covariance was used for the statistical analyses. Strong intervention effects were found for increasing knowledge of all safety topics in the intervention group. Additionally, statistically significant intervention effects were detected for increasing seat belt and helmet use, as well as behavioral intentions of wearing a seat belt and wearing a helmet, among pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. For students in grades 1 and 2, intervention effects were found for increasing helmet use. Among students in grades 3 to 8, the intervention group showed statistically significant increases for seat belt use. Limitations of the study and recommendations for modifying and supporting unintentional injury prevention programs for school children are discussed.
Electrochemical promotion of the reaction rate was investigated for CO oxidation in a solid electrolyte catalytic reactor where a thin film of Pt was deposited on the yttria stabilized zirconia as an electrode as well as a catalyst. It was shown under open circuit condition that potential was a mixed potential of $O_2$exchange reaction and electrochemical reaction induced by CO. The effect of electrochemical modification on the CO oxidation rate was studied at various overpotentials and $P_{CO}$$P_{O2}$.
This study was intended to help workplaces set up an occupational health & safety management system by investigating the certification of the system and by conducting a questionnaire to survey the necessity, purpose, effect and promotion of the system. The occupational health & safety management systems generally adopted in Korea are OHSAS 18001 and K-OHSMS 18001, which are the PDCA model, such like the quality and environment management system. Because these standards have a compatibility with other management systems, individual or integral certification is available. A telephone questionnaire was conducted with 30 workplaces in Kyeonggi Province and Incheon Metropolitan City, which have been certified for the occupational health & safety management systems (OHSAS 18001, KOSHA 2000, and/or K -OHSMS 18001). About 92 percent of them were large-sized workplaces with over 500 employees. For the question on the necessity of the system, most of the respondent answered very necessary. The purposes of the certification were to control the risks in safety and health, to have a systematic approach for accident prevention and sustainable improvement, and to comply with a range of regulations voluntarily, in that order. Most of the answers to the question on the effect of the system were prevention of accident. For the question on the promotion of the system, the most prominent answer was reduction in the workers compensation rate.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to estimate total sugar intake and identify major food sources of total sugar intake in the diet of the Korean population. Methods: Dietary intake data of 33,745 subjects aged one year and over from the KNHANES 2008-2011 were used in the analysis. Information on dietary intake was obtained by one day 24-hour recall method in KNHANES. A database for total sugar content of foods reported in the KNHANES was established using Release 25 of the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, a total sugar database from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and information from nutrition labeling of processed foods. With this database, total sugar intake of each subject was estimated from dietary intake data using SAS. Results: Mean total sugar intake of Koreans was 61.4 g/person/day, corresponding to 12.8% of total daily energy intake. More than half of this amount (35.0 g/day, 7.1% of daily energy intake) was from processed foods. The top five processed food sources of total sugar intake for Koreans were granulated sugar, carbonated beverages, coffee, breads, and fruit and vegetable drinks. Compared to other age groups, total sugar intake of adolescents and young adults was much higher (12 to 18 yrs, 69.6 g/day and 19 to 29 yrs, 68.4 g/day) with higher beverage intake that beverage-driven sugar amounted up to 25% of total sugar intake. Conclusion: This study revealed that more elaborated and customized measures are needed for control of sugar intake of different subpopulation groups, even though current total sugar intake of Koreans was within the range (10-20% of daily energy intake) recommended by Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans. In addition, development of a more reliable database on total sugar and added sugar content of foods commonly consumed by Koreans is warranted.
