The current road traffic signal controller developed in the 1990s has limitations in flexibility and scalability due to power supply problems, various communication methods, and hierarchical black box structures for various equipment and devices installed to improve traffic safety for road users and autonomous cooperative driving. In this paper, we designed a road traffic safety facilities equipment and devices integrated management system that can cope with the rapidly changing future traffic environment by solving the using direct current(DC) and power supply problem through the power over ethernet(PoE) technology and centralized data-driven control through message broker technology. In addition, a data-driven real-time control method for road traffic safety facilities equipment and devices operating based on time series data was implemented and verified.
Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) have become one of the active areas of research, standardization, and development because they have tremendous potentials to improve vehicle and road safety, traffic efficiency, and convenience as well as comfort to both drivers and passengers. However, message trustfulness is a challenge because the propagation of false message by malicious vehicles induces unreliable and ineffectiveness of VANETs, Therefore, we need a reliable reputation method to ensure message trustfulness. In this paper, we consider a vulnerability against the Sybil attack of the previous reputation systems based on blockchain and suggest a new reputation system which resists against Sybil attack on the previous system. We propose an initial authentication process as a countermeasure against a Sybil attack and provide a reliable reputation with a cooperative message delivery to cope with message omission. In addition, we use Homomorphic Commitment to protect the privacy breaches in VANETs environment.
In vehicular safety service, every vehicle broadcasts Basic Safety Message (BSM) periodically to inform neighbor vehicles of host vehicle information. However, this can cause network congestion in a region that is crowded with vehicles resulting in a reduction in the message delivery ratio and an increase in the end-to-end delay. Therefore, it could destabilize the vehicular safety service system. In this paper, in order to improve the congestion control and to consider the hidden node problem, we propose a congestion control scheme using entire network congestion level estimation combined with transmission power control, data rate control and time slot based transmission control algorithm. The performance of this scheme is evaluated using a Qualnet network simulator. The simulation result shows that our scheme mitigates network congestion in heavy traffic cases and enhances network capacity in light traffic cases, so that packet error rate is perfectly within 10% and entire network load level is maintained within 60~70%. Thus, it can be concluded that the proposed congestion control scheme has quite good performance.

In a Vehicular Cloud (VC) network, an announcement protocol plays a critical role in promoting safety and efficiency by enabling vehicles to disseminate safety-related messages. The reliability of message exchange is essential for improving traffic safety and road conditions. However, verifying the message authenticity could lead to the potential compromise of vehicle privacy, presenting a significant security challenge in the VC network. In contrast, if any misbehavior occurs, the accountable vehicle must be identifiable and removed from the network to ensure public safety. Addressing this conflict between message reliability and privacy requires a secure protocol that satisfies accountability properties while preserving user privacy. This paper presents a novel announcement protocol for secure communication in VC networks that utilizes group signature to achieve seemingly contradictory goals of reliability, privacy, and accountability. We have developed the first comprehensive announcement protocol for VC using group signature, which has been shown to improve the performance efficiency and feasibility of the VC network through performance analysis and simulation results.

Vehicular safety service reduces traffic accidents and traffic congestion by informing drivers in advance of threats that may occur while driving using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications in a wireless environment. For vehicle safety services, every vehicle must broadcasts a Basic Safety Message(BSM) periodically. In congested traffic areas, however, network congestion can easily happen, reduce the message delivery ratio, increase end-to-end delay and destabilize vehicular safety service system. In this paper, to solve the network congestion problem in vehicle safety communications, we approximate the relationship between channel busy ratio and the number of vehicles and use it to estimate the total network congestion. We propose a new context-aware transmit power control algorithm which controls the transmission power based on total network congestion. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using Qualnet, a network simulator. As a result, the estimation of total network congestion is accurately approximated except in specific scenarios, and the packet error rate in vehicle safety communication is reduced through transmit power control.

Several multi-hop applications developed for vehicular ad hoc networks use broadcast as a means to either discover nearby neighbors or disseminate useful traffic information to othet vehicles located within a certain geographical area. However, the conventional broadcast mechanism may lead to the so-called broadcast storm problem, a scenario in which there is a high level of contention and collision at the link layer due to an excessive number of broadcast packets. To solve broadcast storm problem, we propose an RPB-MACn-based LV-CAST that is a vehicular broadcast algorithm for disseminating safety-related emergency message. The proposed LV-CAST identifies the last node within transmission range by computing the distance extending on 1 hop from the sending node of an emergency message to the next node of receiving node of the emergency message, and the last node only re-broadcasts the emergency message. The performance of LV-CAST is evaluated through simulation and compared with other message dissemination algorithms.

In this paper, we introduce a warning message providing methodology by considering the elderly's walking behavior in V2P(: Vehicle-to-Pedestrian) communication systems. Using the elderly's accident records in Kyounggi-do area from 2011 to 2014, the elderly's accident behaviors are analyzed by categorizing accidents as road type (single road/ crossing road), existence of traffic signal (with signal/ without signal), existence of crosswalk (crosswalk/ jaywalk), cause of accident (jaywalk/ signal violation/ carelessness accident/ Etc.). In addition, the elderly's behavior variable and vehicle speed are applied, then some threshold values are utilized in a warning message providing in conflict area. Finally, we propose a distance which can protect an accident depending on the elderly's walking speed, safety margin and vehicle speed. By applying the results of this research to the V2P/P2V communication based road safety message providing system with the elderly's walking behavior, it may be helpful to reduce accident rate of the elderly.
Recently, studies have been conducted to cluster vehicles and disseminate safety messages in a VANET environment for driver safety and smoothy traffic. This paper proposes cluster management scheme for safety message dissemination through V2V communication and V2I communication in a VANET environment with high vehicle density and mobility. The proposed scheme reduces packet loss by selecting CH considering reception quality, total data owned by vehicles, moving speed, and connected vehicles, and maintaining cluster head candidates, which are the main agents of message dissemination, considering frequent cluster departures and subscriptions. In addition, the proposed scheme reduces duplicate messages by utilizing clusters by collaborating with a Road side unit(RSU). To prove the excellence of the proposed scheme, various performance evaluations are performed in terms of message packet loss and the number of RSU processing requests. As a result of performance evaluation, the cluster management scheme proposed in this paper shows better performance than the existing scheme.

The Vehicle Safety Communications (VSC) is one of VANET applications for preventing vehicle accidents, and it utilizes vehicle-to-vehicle communication to exchange emergency messages. To propagate such messages in VSC, several schemes based on selective flooding have been proposed. Their common idea is that an emergency message is relayed by one of vehicles receiving the message. However, the schemes do not consider the transmission errors and duplications of an emergency event. In the schemes, if there are transmission errors and a vehicle detects a hazard, there may be vehicles which fail to receive an emergency message. If k vehicles detect a hazard, k emergency messages are created and propagated. The duplications of an event increase reliability of the message delivery but decrease efficiency. In this paper, we propose an emergency message delivery scheme which is efficient and robust to transmission errors. Our proposed scheme utilizes clustering for massage aggregation and retransmissions in a cluster. It also uses an acknowledgment mechanism for reliable inter-cluster communication. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms Least Common Neighbor Flooding which is one of the selective flooding schemes.

This study is situated in the context of intelligent transport systems, where in-vehicle devices assist drivers to avoid accidents and therefore improve road safety. The vehicles present in a given area form an ad' hoc network of vehicles called vehicular ad' hoc network. In this type of network, the nodes are mobile vehicles and the messages exchanged are messages to warn about obstacles that may hinder the correct driving. Node mobilities make it impossible for inter-node communication to be end-to-end. Recognizing this characteristic has led to delay-tolerant vehicular networks. Embedded devices have small buffers (memory) to hold messages that a node needs to transmit when no other node is within its visibility range for transmission. The performance of a vehicular delay-tolerant network is closely tied to the successful management of the nodes' transit buffer. In this paper, we propose a message transit buffer management model for nodes in vehicular delay tolerant networks. This model consists in setting up, on the one hand, a policy of dropping messages from the buffer when the buffer is full and must receive a new message. This drop policy is based on the concept of intermediate node to destination, queues and priority class of service. It is also based on the properties of the message (size, weight, number of hops, number of replications, remaining time-to-live, etc.). On the other hand, the model defines the policy for selecting the message to be transmitted. The proposed model was evaluated with the ONE opportunistic network simulator based on a 4000m x 4000m area of downtown Bouaké in Côte d'Ivoire. The map data were imported using the Open Street Map tool. The results obtained show that our model improves the delivery ratio of security alert messages, reduces their delivery delay and network overload compared to the existing model. This improvement in communication within a network of vehicles can contribute to the improvement of road safety.
