To successfully operate safety management system, safety culture factors such as the organization member's level of consciousness, attitude and faith regarding safety must be put together. However, the aviation field currently lacks programs to promote safety culture and the exact understanding of some safety culture concepts. Method: This research inquired into the definition of safety culture in the aviation field and the surveying tools used to measure it. It then described the development and application process of the Korea-Safety Culture Survey Indicator (K-SCSI) mainly focusing on case studies. Results: In this research are presented safety culture promoting programs that can be applied to subordinate indicators of K-SCSI such as organization commitment, management involvement, rationality of reward system, employee empowerment and reporting system. Conclusion: For a mature safety culture to settle successfully, it is essential that safety culture survey indicators are developed and applied in a way that fits the organization's features. Also, behavior measuring indicators are required to develop a more objective indicator and thus must be standardized. Application: Cases that deal with the development and application of safety culture measuring tools within the aviation field can be studied and applied in other domains to spread safety culture.

  • A brief emergency planning educational presentation was taught during work hours to a convenience sample of employees of various workplaces in Northern Missouri, USA. Participants were familiarized with details about how an emergency plan is prepared by management and implemented by management-employee crisis management teams - focusing on both employee and management roles. They then applied the presentation information to assess their own organization's emergency preparedness level. Participants possessed significantly (p < 0.05) higher perceptions of their organization's level of emergency preparedness than non-participants. It is recommended that an assessment of organizational preparedness level supplement emergency planning educational presentations in order to immediately apply the material covered and encourage employees to become more involved in their organization's emergency planning and response. Educational strategies that involve management-employee collaboration in activities tailored to each workplace's operations and risk level for emergencies should be implemented.

  • Background: safety and healthy working environment has received numerous research attention over the years. Majority of these researches seem to have been conducted in the construction industry, with little attention in the health sector. Nonetheless, there are couple of studies conducted in Africa that suggest pressure in hospitals. Therefore the aim of the study was to examine how pressure influence safety behavior in the hospitals. With reference to the relevance of safety behavior in primary health care delivery, there was the need for the study. Method: Data was obtained from 422 public hospital employees. Respondents were assured that all information would be kept confidential to increase the response rate and acquire more accurate information. Collection of questionnaires from participants took four weeks (20 working days), after which the data was analyzed. Results: The result of the study showed that work pressure correlated negatively with safety behavior. General safety climate significantly correlated positively with safety behavior and negatively with work pressure, although the effect size for the latter was smaller. Hierarchical regression analysis showed management commitment to safety to moderate the relationship between work pressure and safety behavior. Conclusion: When employees perceive safety communication, safety systems and training to be positive, they seem to comply with safety rules and procedures than voluntarily participate in safety activities.
