  • Objective: The objective of this research is to study preceding literature on safety culture surveying tools and indicators used in aviation organizations to help the further understanding of aviation safety culture by presenting Korea-Safety Culture Survey Indicator (K-SCSI) as a relevant case. Background: The aviation field puts a great deal of effort in preventive safety management through the application of Safety Management System (SMS), which was co-developed by international aviation organizations such as ICAO and FAA. To successfully operate safety management system, safety culture factors such as the organization member's level of consciousness, attitude and faith regarding safety must be put together. However, the aviation field currently lacks programs to promote safety culture and the exact understanding of some safety culture concepts. Method: This research inquired into the definition of safety culture in the aviation field and the surveying tools used to measure it. It then described the development and application process of the Korea-Safety Culture Survey Indicator (K-SCSI) mainly focusing on case studies. Results: In this research are presented safety culture promoting programs that can be applied to subordinate indicators of K-SCSI such as organization commitment, management involvement, rationality of reward system, employee empowerment and reporting system. Conclusion: For a mature safety culture to settle successfully, it is essential that safety culture survey indicators are developed and applied in a way that fits the organization's features. Also, behavior measuring indicators are required to develop a more objective indicator and thus must be standardized. Application: Cases that deal with the development and application of safety culture measuring tools within the aviation field can be studied and applied in other domains to spread safety culture.

  • A brief emergency planning educational presentation was taught during work hours to a convenience sample of employees of various workplaces in Northern Missouri, USA. Participants were familiarized with details about how an emergency plan is prepared by management and implemented by management-employee crisis management teams - focusing on both employee and management roles. They then applied the presentation information to assess their own organization's emergency preparedness level. Participants possessed significantly (p < 0.05) higher perceptions of their organization's level of emergency preparedness than non-participants. It is recommended that an assessment of organizational preparedness level supplement emergency planning educational presentations in order to immediately apply the material covered and encourage employees to become more involved in their organization's emergency planning and response. Educational strategies that involve management-employee collaboration in activities tailored to each workplace's operations and risk level for emergencies should be implemented.

The purposes of this study were to describe worksite health and safety education and management status in Korean manufacturing companies. Methods: The original population size of Korean manufacturing industry in 2004 was 74,398 and 2,960 factories were selected by the multiple stratified sampling method for this study. The companies which assigned at least one safety manager were 70.5% and which had a health and safety room within the company were only 9.3%. The companies which took the health and safety education for their regular blue-collar employees more than the legal education hours were under 56.1% and the percentage of the companies which took their health and safety education for newcomers less than the legal limits was lower than any other types of health and safety education in workplace. The significant strong workplace health and safety management variables in predicting employee health and safety education were psycho-social variables such as the company own health and safety regulation and the workplace health and safety management committee organization. rather than physical variables such as health manager employment, safety manager employment. Conclusions: Systematic and legal approaches are effective to encourage workplace health and safety education, specifically, through sustaining health and safety managers and building the company-wide health and safety management system. Furthermore, theses approaches should primarily focus on the small companies of which sizes were under 50.

  • Safety-related accidents are continuously increasing in the construction field. In order to prevent or minimize such accidents, a systematic and active safety activities of on-site managers and workers are required. However, preexisting advance research is lacking on how the safety organization systems are built in construction sites varying in sizes, and how well-trained the related personnel are in safety knowledge and task performances. Especially, a research on the analysis of the formation of their safety knowledge sharing and safety performance cooperation and their visualization is virtually nonexistent. In this regard, this research was conducted with a purpose to study the generalized safety organization method of domestic construction sites, analyze the safety knowledge and cooperation system of the members based on the SNA method and ultimately provide a hands-on data that could be effectively utilized in building an effective safety management system in the future.
