  • This study was to investigate the phytoplankton communities and phytohydrographic characteristics of the inside and outside of the Saemangeum Reservoir from May to November 2006 directly after dike construction. As the cluster analyses, phytohydrographic regions were devided into fresh river water and seawater regions, and the similarities between the sampling sites fluctuated temporarily. Distinctive phytohydrographic difference was shown between inside and outside of the dike in summer. After the dike construction, declining salinity and changing water quality have caused to change the phytoplankton communities and phytohygrographic regions.

  • Multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are widely used to simulate the physical and biogeochemical processes in the surface water systems such as reservoirs and estuaries. Most of the models have adopted the Eulerian grid modeling framework, mainly because it can reasonably simulate physical dynamics and chemical species concentrations throughout the entire model domain. Determining the optimum grid cell size is important when using the Eulerian grid-based three-dimensional water quality models because the characteristics of species are assumed uniform in each of the grid cells and chemical species are represented by concentration (mass per volume). The objective of this study was to examine the effect of grid-size of a three dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (EFDC) on hydrodynamics and mass transport in the Saemangeum Reservoir. Three grid resolutions, respectively representing coarse (CG), medium (MG), and fine (FG) grid cell sizes, were used for a sensitivity analysis. The simulation results of numerical tracer showed that the grid resolution affects on the flow path, mass transport, and mixing zone of upstream inflow, and results in a bias of temporal and spatial distribution of the tracer. With the CG, in particular, the model overestimates diffusion in the mixing zone, and fails to identify the gradient of concentrations between the inflow and the ambient water.

  • In order to understand hydrodynamic and water quality changes on the Saemangeum reservoir in accordance to inner development plan, intensive numerical simulations using EFDC have been done. Due to inner dike construction and proposed dredging plans, stratification might occur and yield flow field change. It should be noticed that very conditional gate operation schedule adjusting target water elevation of -1.5 meter causes severe stratification and hence plays an important role in poor water qualities. By using random walk particle tracking residence simulations, it is found that hydrodynamic characteristics depends greatly on riverine inflow conditions. It is also inferred that the northern part of the Mangyeong reservoir behaves as a dead zone and acts as major reasoning of water quality deterioration owing to benthic flux from long-term residing settled sediment.

  • In order to understand the extent of contamination of the sediments on the Mankyoung and Dongjin Rivers flowing into the Saemangeum Reservoir, the concentrations of ignition loss (IL), COD, total nitrogen (T-N), total phosphorus (T-P), and heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn) were measured. The average concentrations of IL, COD, and T-P were 2.40 (${\pm}2.18$)%, 2.97 (${\pm}3.06$) mg/g sediment, 0.370 (${\pm}0.351$) mg/g sediment, respectively, showing the extent of contamination is not serious. However, the concentrations of these parameters in the samples taken in year 2009 were higher than those in year 2008, indicating the contamination of sediments goes on gradually. The concentrations of T-N were in the range of 0.59~13.11 mg/g sediment with variation of locations and seasons. It was determined that the T-N contamination is serious when the concentrations were compared with the dredging guidelines of sediments in the Korean freshwaters, indicating the countermeasures are required to maintain the water quality of the Saemangeum Reservoir. The concentrations of heavy metals except chromium did not exceed the worrisome level of soil contamination stipulated by the Soil Environment Conservation Act of Korea. The high concentration of chromium to be concerned in some samples from the upstream of Mankyoung River requires source analysis and countermeasure to control the contamination.

  • A Saemangeum Development Project, which is a national project in South Korea, has started with the objective of developing the reclaimed area mainly agricultural land use since the mid'80s. To develop a model of the global eco-reclamation, constructions of the eco-friendly counter facilities such as sluice gates and inner dikes, as well as environmental preservation measures for an estuary reservoir, have been carried out. However, reasonable measures of the water quality management for the Saemangeum area are required. Thus, the purpose of this study is to rigorously analyze and quantitatively evaluate the environmental problems due to the water level management associated with inner dike constructions. To achieve these objectives, the affecting factors on determination of water level management are described and a series of calibrated transient-state numerical simulations was performed to demonstrate the salinity distribution difference in the estuary before and after the construction of inner dikes. The overall salinity reduced about 2~5 psu, and the seawater intrusion was weakened by a well-regulated waterway after construction of the inner dikes compared to before construction of them.

  • Saemangeum lake is an artificial lake created by reclamation works and an estuary embankment since 2006. The sea water flows into the lake by the operation of two sluice gates, and the freshwater enters into the lake by the upper streams. For the reflection of hydrology and hydrodynamics effects in Saemangeum area, a hydrodynamics model was developed by connecting Hydrological Simulation Program with Fortran (HSPF) and Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code (EFDC). The HSPF was applied to simulate the freshwater discharge from the upper steam watershed, and the EFDC was performed to compute water flow, water temperature, and salinity based on time series from 2008 to 2009. The calibration and validation are performed to analyze horizontal and vertical gradients. The horizontal trend of model simulation results is reflected in the trend of observed data tolerably. The vertical trend is conducted an analysis of seasonal comparisons because of the limitation of vertically observed data. Water temperature reflects on the seasonal changes. Salinity has an effect on the near river input spots. The impact area of salinity is depending on the sea water distribution by gate operation, mainly.

  • Water quality simulations on the Saemangeum inner reservoir have been carried out using EFDC model to understand water quality variations caused by abrupt physical changes due to closing of tidal barrier. According to hydrodynamic simulation, model reproduces not only outer regional dynamics but also inner superelevation very well. Calibration and verification of water quality models accomplished using observed data taken before closing. Also sensitivity tests regarding riverine discharges and tidal flats were done. Due to enlarging of always wet zone caused by super elevation on inner tidal flats, predicted DO decreases at that region as a result of SOD. Moreover shrink of mixing zone after closing of dike causes deteriorating of water quality showing DO as 2 mg/L during summer at Mangyeong and Dongjin estuaries, however it does not spread to middle part of the reservoir. Vertical stratification occurs after closing and shows vertical differences in DO concentration at least 6 mg/L to 7 mg/L in summer season. Most part of the reservoir is getting stratified and it leads to an oxigen deficit zone near bottom.

  • It is investigated using ADCIRC model to find an optimal gate operation in order to maintain target water level of the inner Saemangeum Reservoir. Various developing procedures and river inflows conditions are considered in modeling. For the gate operations, consecutive openings to inflow and outflow, such as once a day, twice a day and once per two days are considered. However water level increases gradually due to river inflows regardless of gate operations. In order to maintain target level 0.0 m, it is recommended to shut down of gate in order to prevent inflows of outer sea water at least once per 6 days for normal riverine inflows and once per 3 days for flood inflows during consecutive operations. Then it is balanced within maximum of ${\pm}0.4m$ of deviations from target level of 0.0 meter.
