Bone age assessment has been widely used in pediatrics to identify endocrine problems of children. Since the number of trained doctors is far less than the demands, there has been numerous requests for automatic estimation of bone age. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an automatic bone age assessment method that utilizes pattern classification techniques. The proposed method consists of three modules; a finger segmentation module, a normalized shape model generation module and a bone age estimation module. The finger segmentation module segments fingers and epiphyseal regions by means of various image processing algorithms. The shape model abstraction module employ ASM to improves the accuracy of feature extraction for bone age estimation. In addition, SVM is used for estimation of bone age. Features for the estimation include the length of bone and the ratios of bone length. We evaluated the performance of the proposed method through statistical analysis by comparing the bone age assessment results by clinical experts and the proposed automatic method. Through the experimental results, the mean error of the assessment was 0.679 year, which was better than the average error acceptable in clinical practice.

Gunnery has been used to detect and classify artilleries. In this paper, we used electro-optical data to get the information of muzzle flash from the artilleries. Feature based approach was applied; we first defined features and sub-features. The number of sub-features was 38~40 generic sub-features, and 2 model-based sub-features. To classify multiclass data, we introduced tree structure with clustering the classes according to the similarity of them. SVM was used for each non-leaf nodes in the tree, as a sub-classifier. From the data, we extracted features and sub-features and classified them by the tree structure SVM classifier. The results showed that the performance of our classifier was good for our muzzle flash classification problem.

A newly developed fall recognition algorithm using gravity weighted 3-axis accelerometer data as the input of HMM (Hidden Markov Model) is introduced. Five types of fall feature parameters including the sum vector magnitude(SVM) and a newly-defined gravity-weighted sum vector magnitude(GSVM) are applied to a HMM to evaluate the accuracy of fall recognition. A GSVM parameter shows the best accuracy of falls which is 100% of sensitivity and 97.96% of specificity, and comparing with SVM, the results archive more improved recognition rate, 5.2% of sensitivity and 4.5% of specificity. GSVM shows higher recognition rate than SVM due to expressing falls characteristics well, whereas SVM expresses the only momentum.
Railway point machines act as actuators that provide different routes to trains by driving switchblades from the current position to the opposite one. Since point failure caused by the aging effect can significantly affect railway operations with potentially disastrous consequences, replacement detection of point machine at an appropriate time is critical. In this paper, we propose a replacement condition detection method of point machine in railway condition monitoring systems using electrical current signals, after analyzing and relabeling domestic in-field replacement data by means of OLAP(On-Line Analytical Processing) operations in the multidimensional data cube into "does-not-need-to-be replaced" and "needs-to-be-replaced" data. The system enables extracting suitable feature vectors from the incoming electrical current signals by DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) with reduced feature dimensions using PCA(Principal Components Analysis), and employs SVM(Support Vector Machine) for the real-time replacement detection of point machine. Experimental results with in-field replacement data including points anomalies show that the system could detect the replacement conditions of railway point machines with accuracy exceeding 98%.

There are two unique characteristics of the datasets from a manufacturing process. They are the severe class imbalance and lots of Out-of-Distribution samples. Some good strategies such as the oversampling over the minority class, and the down-sampling over the majority class, are well known to handle the class imbalance. In addition, SMOTE has been chosen to address the issue recently. But, Out-of-Distribution samples have been studied just with neural networks. It seems to be hardly shown that Out-of-Distribution detection is applied to the predictive model using conventional machine learning algorithms such as SVM, Random Forest and KNN. It is known that conventional machine learning algorithms are much better than neural networks in prediction performance, because neural networks are vulnerable to over-fitting and requires much bigger dataset than conventional machine learning algorithms does. So, we suggests a new approach to utilize Out-of-Distribution detection based on SVM algorithm. In addition to that, bagging technique will be adopted to improve the precision of the model.
In this paper, TI was measured to classify the presence or absence of mild left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. Of the total 306 data, 206 were used as training data and 100 were used as test data, and the machine learning models used for classification used SVM and KNN. As a result, it was confirmed that SVM showed relatively higher accuracy than KNN and was more useful in diagnosing the presence of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. In future research, it is expected that classification performance can be further improved by adding various indicators that evaluate not only TI but also cardiac function and securing more data. Furthermore, it is expected to be used as basic data to predict and classify other diseases and solve the problem of insufficient medical manpower compared to the increasing number of tests.

We propose a recognition system for superimposed patterns based on selective attention model and SVM which produces better performance than artificial neural network. The proposed selective attention model includes attention layer prior to SVM which affects SVM's input parameters. It also behaves as selective filter. The philosophy behind selective attention model is to find the stopping criteria to stop training and also defines the confidence measure of the selective attention's outcome. Support vector represents the other surrounding sample vectors. The support vector closest to the initial input vector in consideration is chosen. Minimal euclidean distance between the modified input vector based on selective attention and the chosen support vector defines the stopping criteria. It is difficult to define the confidence measure of selective attention if we apply common selective attention model, A new way of doffing the confidence measure can be set under the constraint that each modified input pixel does not cross over the boundary of original input pixel, thus the range of applicable information get increased. This method uses the following information; the Euclidean distance between an input pattern and modified pattern, the output of SVM, the support vector output of hidden neuron that is the closest to the initial input pattern. For the recognition experiment, 45 different combinations of USPS digit data are used. Better recognition performance is seen when selective attention is applied along with SVM than SVM only. Also, the proposed selective attention shows better performance than common selective attention.
Although Support Vector Machine(SVM) has been used in various fields such as bankruptcy prediction model, the hyperplane learned by SVM in class imbalance problem can be severely skewed toward minority class and has a negative impact on performance because the area of majority class is expanded while the area of minority class is invaded. This study proposed optimized uneven margin SVM(OPT-UMSVM) combining threshold moving or post scaling method with UMSVM to cope with the limitation of the traditional even margin SVM(EMSVM) in class imbalance problem. OPT-UMSVM readjusted the skewed hyperplane to the majority class and had better generation ability than EMSVM improving the sensitivity of minority class and calculating the optimized performance. To validate OPT-UMSVM, 10-fold cross validations were performed on five sub-datasets with different imbalance ratio values. Empirical results showed two main findings. First, UMSVM had a weak effect on improving the performance of EMSVM in balanced datasets, but it greatly outperformed EMSVM in severely imbalanced datasets. Second, compared to EMSVM and conventional UMSVM, OPT-UMSVM had better performance in both balanced and imbalanced datasets and showed a significant difference performance especially in severely imbalanced datasets.
