  • A graphic user interface program for the design of vehicle suspension system is developed in this work. Graphic templates are designed by using a graphic language and a library and given to users for interactive data input. Several suspension types are graphically given, and the information of hard points can be directly provided on the graphic templates by users. The information is saved in a data structure which can be efficiently accessed, and transformed into another data format. The data transformation is for the interface to an analyzer by which suspension design characteristics can be calculated.

  • Suspension effect has been studied by using superconductor of BiPbSrCaCuO ceramics containing $Ag_2O$. It has been cleared that $Ag_2O$ acts as pinning center which plays an important role to the suspension effect. Magnetic repulsive force which affects a superconductor located in magnetic flux from toroidal magnet has been investigated. It has been concluded that the suspension effect arises from the interaction between the pinning effect and the diamagnetic effect.

  • In this paper, a modified skyhook control for the semi-active Macpherson suspension system is investigated. A new model for the semi-active type suspension, which incorporates the rotational motion of the unsprung mass, is introduced and an output feedback control law using the skyhook control method is derived. The gains in the skyhook controller are adaptively adjusted by estimating the road conditions. Because two vertical acceleration sensors, one for the sprung mass and another for the unsprung mass, are used rather than using the angle sensor for the rotational motion of the control arm, the relative velocity of the rattle space is filtered using the acceleration signals. For testing the control performance, the actual damping force has been incorporated via the hardware-in-the-loop simulations. The performances of a passive damper and a semi-active damper are compared. Simulation results are provided.

  • A conventional quarter-car suspension system is a single input system with one actuator. Thus, the performance enhancement for ride quality could be limited. In this paper, we propose a novel automotive suspension system for a quarter-car with two independent actuators to improve the control performance. The left eigenstructure assignment method for multi-variable systems has been applied to the proposed novel quarter-car model.

  • The nonlinear characteristics of a suspension is directly related to the ride quality of a passenger car. In this study, a dynamic experiment for a spring and a damper of a passenger car is performed to analyze the nonlinear characteristics using MTS 1-axial testing machine and a mathematical nonlinear dynamic suspension model based on experimental data is devised to estimate the ride quality using Billings' method. The devised nonlinear model is applied to the ride quality analysis using K factor and the effect of suspension parameters is examined. As a result, the friction between the cylinder and the piston of a damper is the most effective parameter for the ride quality of a passenger car.

  • Passive control of the flutter condition of suspension bridges using a combined vertical and torsional tuned mass damper (TMD) system is presented. The proposed TMD system has two degrees of freedom, which are tuned close to the frequencies corresponding to vertical and torsional symmetric modes of the bridge which get coupled during flutter. The bridge-TMD system is analyzed for finding critical wind speed for flutter using a finite element approach. Thomas Suspension Bridge is analyzed as an illustrative example. The effectiveness of the TMD system in increasing the critical flutter speed of the bridge is investigated through a parametric study. The results of the parametric study led to the optimization of some important parameters such as mass ratio, TMD damping ratio, tuning frequency, and number of TMD systems which provide maximum critical flutter wind speed of the suspension bridge.

  • By using the nonlinear aerostatic stability theory together with the method of mean wind decomposition, a method for nonlinear aerostatic stability analysis is proposed for long-span suspension bridges under yaw wind. A corresponding program is developed considering static wind load nonlinearity and structural nonlinearity. Taking a suspension bridge with three towers and double main spans as an example, the full range aerostatic instability is analyzed under wind at different attack angles and yaw angles. The results indicate that the lowest critical wind speed of aerostatic instability is gained when the initial yaw angle is greater than $0^{\circ}$, which suggests that perhaps yaw wind poses a disadvantage to the aerostatic stability of a long span suspension bridge. The results also show that the main span in upstream goes into instability first, and the reason for this phenomenon is discussed.

  • Sensitivity analysis of suspension elements of an articulated bogie for light railway vehicles is presented. The ride, stability and safety are used as dynamic performance index. Suspension elements of 10 and a conicity of wheel are used as design variables, To analyze sensitivity of design variables, the railway vehicle dynamics analysis program AGEM is used. The results shows that the secondary suspension elements have a strong effect on ride and the primary suspension elements have a moderate effect on ride. Conicity of wheel has a strong effect on the stability, The safety is not effected by all the design variables.

  • This paper addresses the problem of damage detection in suspension bridge hangers, with an emphasis on the modal flexibility method. It aims at evaluating the capability and the accuracy of the modal flexibility method to detect and locate single and multiple damages in suspension bridge hangers, with different level of severity and various locations. The study is conducted numerically and experimentally on a laboratory suspension bridge mock-up. First, the covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification is used to extract the modal parameters of the bridge from experimental data, using only output measurements data from ambient vibration. Then, the method is demonstrated for several damage scenarios and compared against other classical methods, such as: Coordinate Modal Assurance Criterion (COMAC), Enhanced Coordinate Modal Assurance Criterion (ECOMAC), Mode Shape Curvature (MSC) and Modal Strain Energy (MSE). The paper demonstrates the relative merits and shortcomings of these methods which play a significant role in the damage detection ofsuspension bridges.

  • Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin disease of the pilose-baceous unit. It appears as lesions consisting of comedones, papules, pustules, and nodules of varying shapes and severity. In general, the first-line treatment for acne vulgaris includes topical and oral medication. Recently, various physical modalities have also been investigated. The use of laser therapy is steadily increasing because of its fewer side effects, short procedure time, and rapid results. In particular, laser therapy assisted with carbon suspension application is effective for acne vulgaris but may sometimes result in discomfort due to odor and dust formation during the procedure. Herein, we report that acne vulgaris and enlarged facial pores can be safely and effectively treated with laser therapy assisted with diamond particle suspension and gold microparticle application, which can address the discomfort caused by the carbon suspension application.
