  • The predominant sintering mechanisms of low firing temperature ceramic substrate which consists of borosilicate glass containing alumina as a filler are the rearrangement of alumina particles and the viscous flow of glass powders. In this system, sintering condition depends on the volume ratio of alumina to glass and on the particle size. When the substrate contains about 35 vol% alumina filler and the average alumina particle size is 4 $\mu\textrm{m}$, the best firing condition is obtained at the temperature range of 900∼1000$^{\circ}C$. The extensive rearrangement behavior occurs at these conditions, and the optimum sintering condition is attained by smaller size of glass particles, too. The formation of cristobalite during sintering causes the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between the substrate and Si chip. This phenomenon degradates the capacity of Si chip. Therefore, the crystallization should be prevented. In the alumina filled borosilicate glass system, the crystallization does not occur. This effect may have some relation with aluminum ions in alumina. For aluminum ions diffuse into glass matrix during sintering, functiong as network former.

  • The process of double coating consists of bottom coating using relatively coaser pigments to improve characteristics of base paper and top coating using finer pigments to cover unevenness of the bottom coating and to give various function of the coated paper. The structure of precoating is influenced not only by its components, but also characteristics of base paper, Moreover pore size and its size distribution of precoating are expected to influence the top coating properties, but this is not well understood. Coating and printing operations involve the application of pigmented fluid on top of a porous substrate. The porosity of the substrate has been shown to influence the properties of the coating, but a good understanding of the mechanisms is lacking in the literature. The role of pore size and void volume on top coating structure is unclear.

  • The properties of Ni/Au Ohmic contacts formed on nonpolar a-plane GaN grown on r-plane sapphire substrate with different tilt angles are investigated using current-voltage (I-V) measurements. To investigate the effects of pattern direction and size on Ohmic contact properties of a-plane GaN, transmission line method (TLM) patterns are formed either along c-axis and m-axis on nonpolar GaN surface with different size. I-V measurement results show that the size of TLM pattern and formation direction of electrode have an effect on the electrical properties of a-plane GaN. The large sized patterns show the relatively lower sheet resistance compared to the small sized patterns. In addition, the sheet resistance of a-plane GaN along m-axis shows lower values than that along the c-axis. Finally, the effects of miscut angle of r-sapphire substrate ($0.2^{\circ}$, 0.4oand $0.6^{\circ}$) on electrical properties of a-plane GaN will be discussed.

  • New type of the base material of the light-emitting diode requires copper wafer in view of heat and electrical conductance. Therefore, polishing process of the substrate level is needed to get a nanometer level of surface roughness as compared with pattern structure of nano-size in the semiconductor industry. In this paper, a series of lapping and polishing technique is shown for the rough and deflected copper substrate of thickness 3mm. Lapping by sand papers tried air cooling method. And two steps of polishing used the diamond abrasives and the $Al_2O_3$ slurry of size 100mm considering the residual scratch. White-light interferometer proved successfully a mirror-like surface roughness of Ra 6nm on the area of $0.56mm{\times}0.42mm$.

  • A coplanar waveguide employing periodic 3D coupling structures (CWP3DCS) was developed for application in miniaturized on-chip passive components on silicon radio frequency integrated circuits (RFIC). The CWP3DCS showed the shortest wavelength of all silicon-based transmission line structures that have been reported to date. Using CWP3DCS, a highly miniaturized impedance transformer was fabricated on silicon substrate, and the resulting device showed good RF performance in a broad band from 4.6 GHz to 28.6 GHz. The device as was 0.04 mm2 in size, which is only 0.74% of the size of the conventional transformer on silicon substrate.

  • The activity of immobilized cell-support particle aggregates is influenced by physical and biochemical elements, mass transfer, and physiology. Accordingly, the mathematical model discussed in this study is capable of predicting the steady state and transient concentration profiles of the cell mass and substrate, plus the effects of the substrate and product inhibition in an immobilized cell-support aggregate. The overall mathematical model is comprised of material balance equations for the cell mass, major carbon source, dissolved oxygen, and non-biomass products in a bulk suspension along with a single particle model. A smaller bead size and higher substrate concentration at the surface of the particle, resulted in a higher supply of the substrate into the aggregate and consequently a higher biocatalyst activity.

  • The length extensional vibration mode of a piezoelectric ceramic substrate is used in fabricating the ultra-small size resonators and filters. In general, the three side ratios of the rectangular substrate affect the resonant characteristics of the resonator using its length extensional vibration. In this paper, their relationships are studied. We know that changing the ratio of its length to its width makes possible to change the resonant frequency of the width vibration without degrading the length extensional vibration. And frequency constant for length extensional vibration becomes slightly small as the substrate thickness becomes thin, but it does not change as its length changes. Electro-mechanical coupling factor for length extensional vibration, k$\_$31/ does not change as its length changes within length/width$\geq$4, but it becomes small as its width increases.

  • This study was performed employing the two stage aerated submerged biofilter of media pore size 1.5cm and 2cm, and infiuent substrate concentrations were 30.25mg COD/l, 50.1mg COD/l respectively. The purpose was to determine the treatment efficiency at the low concentration infiuent, reaction order and substrate flux with application of variable-order model that was presented by Rittmann and McCarty. . The results are as follows. 1. Treatment efficiency of 1st reactor was about BOD 82% and COD 76%, when effluent concentration was BOD 3.9 ~ 6.8, COD 7.1 ~ 12.5 mg/l, and this effluent concentration didn't satisfy the water quality grade I, II of river and lake. But as treated effluent of 1st reactor with 2nd reactor, we could achieve appropriate water quality, since instillation of 2nd reactor was needed. 2. Difference of media pore size between 1.5cm and 2cm didn't effect significantly to treatment efficiency and since this of 2nd reactor was about BOD 60%, COD 50%, an consideration of economic point of view should be carried out in field application. 3. Reaction order and substrate flux was varied 0.9851~0.9956 and 0.0028~0.0405 mg/$cm^{2} \cdot day$, and the substrate flux was increased as infiuent substrate concentration increased.

  • Vanadium dioxide(VO2) has been reported to be the most attractive material for thermochromic windows due to its semiconductor-metal phase transition at around $68^{\circ}C$. However, our previous experiment showed it is difficult to grow VO2 thin films directly on glass substrate, whereas thermochromic VO2 thin films were successfully grown on R-cut sapphire substrate. Properties of VO2 thin films on different orientations of sapphire substrates were already reported. Furthermore, VO2 thin films were successfully grown heteroepitaxially on (001) preferred oriented ZnO coated glass. We deposited VO2 thin films using V2O5 targets on substrates with various lattice parameters with same orientation(SrTiO3, MgO, and Sapphire substrate of (001) orientation) by pulsed laser deposition. In this work, we will discuss the effects of lattice misfit, substrate-induced stress and grain size on the properties of VO2 thin films deposited on various substrate materials.

  • In this study, characteristics of silver ink-jet printing were investigated under various substrate treatments such as substrate heating, hydrophobic coating, and ultraviolet(UV)/ozone soaking. Fluorocarbon(FC) film was spin-coated on the polyimide (PI) film substrate to obtain a hydrophobic surface. Although hydrophobicity of the FC film could reduce the diameter of the printed droplets, the singlet images printed on the FC film surface showed irregularities in the pattern size and the position of the printed droplet along with droplet merging phenomenon. The proposed UV/ozone soaking of the FC film improved the uniformity of the pattern size and the droplet position after printing and substrate heating was very effective way in preventing droplet merging. By heating of the substrate after UV/ozone soaking of the coated FC film, silver conductive lines of 78-116 ${\mu}m$ line were successfully printed at low substrate temperatures of $40^{\circ}C$.
