  • The purpose of this study was to test and analyze the effects of the mechanical properties and structural changes of the austenitized and tempered martensite STS 410 stainless steel containing 11.5~13%Cr and 0.10%C on its temper embrittlement. The STS 410 stainless steel test pieces for each 3 hours at 960℃, 1000℃ and then, tempered them for 2 hours at 300℃, 350℃, 400℃, 450℃, 500℃, 550℃, 600℃, 650℃ and 700℃ known as the intervals vulnerable to temper embrittlement to observe the changes of their structures and mechanical properties. In case autenitizing was insufficient due to lower temperature of thermal treatment for solution, unsolved carbides and ferrites remained in the structure after quenching, which meant that the parts could wear out and corrode to embrittle at the room temperature. Elongation and impact energy changes with Tempering conditions showed minimum results in range of 400~500℃. The decrease in elongation and impact energy at 400~500℃ was the hardening effect of the subgrain due to the precipitation of many M3C or M7C3, M23C6. And STS 410 stainless steel corrosion tested in 10% NaCl solution at 30℃ after tempering treatment. The degree of corrosion sensitization showed increasing tendency with increase of tempering temperature and Cr carbide precipitation were observed in grain boundary.

  • Nitrided compound layer and diffusion layer structure were observed by SEM. The compound layer and the constituent of nitrided surface of STS 304, STS 316, STS 410 and SACM 645 steel were analysed using EMPA and XRD respectively. The depth of nitriding layer that is obtained from similar nitriding condition decrease in the order of SACM 645 > STS 410 > STS 316 > STS 304. Result of phase transformation of the nitrided at $550^{\circ}C$ by XRD analysis were as follows; The austenitic stainless steel was mainly consist of $Cr_2N$ accompanying with $Fe_4N$ and $Fe_{2-3}N$ phase and martensitic stainless steel was mainly consist of present $Fe_{2-3}N+Cr_2N$ phase, but SACM 645 steel was $Fe_{2-3}N$ phase present only.

  • STS 410, a representative martensitic stainless steel, contains 13 % chromium and is used for building materials, automobile parts, office equipment, kitchen utensils, and tableware. In general, the strength of STS 410 changes by the carbon content, and STS 410 of low carbon has excellent toughness and high carbon has excellent abrasion resistance. In this study, a fatigue test was performed on the STS 410 material to evaluate the exact fatigue limit and to evaluate the behavior of the material against fatigue. In addition, the effect on burnishing, a kind of plastic processing that creates a smooth surface by pressing a ball or roller on the inner and outer surfaces of the material was evaluated. The fatigue limit was 509 MPa for the STS 410 material, and the result was 54.5 % of the tensile strength. The fatigue limit was 542 MPa for the specimen of diamind burnished STS 410 material, and it was 58.5 % of the tensile strength.

  • Microstructural changes during tempering at the temperature range of $300^{\circ}C{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ for the nitrogen-permeated STS 410 and 410L martensitic stainless steels has been investigated. After nitrogen permeation at temperature between 1050 and $1150^{\circ}C$, the surface layer appeared fine $Cr_2N$ of square and rod types in the martensite matrices. Hardness of the nitrogen-permeated surface layer represented 680Hv and 625Hv, respectively, for 410 and 410L steels. It is considered that the fine homogeneously dispersive effect of precipitates by nitrogen caused the increased hardness. Due to the counter current effect of carbon from interior to surface during nitrogen diffusion from surface to interior, the 0.1%C alloyed 410 steel showed the low nitrogen content of 0.025% compared with 0.045% of 410L steel at the distance of $100{\mu}m$ from the surface. Tempering of nitrogen-alloyed 410 and 410L showed the maximum hardness at $450^{\circ}C$. This maximum hardness was considered to be the secondary hardening effect of very fine carbide and nitride. The decrease in hardness at $700^{\circ}C$ was the softening effect of the matrix due to the precipitation of many needle-shaped $Cr_2N$ for 410 steel and the precipitation of coarse nitride of $Cr_2N$ in line with the spherical precipitates with directionality for 410L steel. For 410 steel, the corrosion resistance of nitrogen permeated surface in the solution of 1 N $H_2SO_4$ were nearly unchanged, however the superior corrosion resistance was obtained for nitrogen permeated 410L steel compared to the solution annealed condition.
