The omphalomesenteric duct normally obliterates by the sixth week of intrauterine life. Incomplete obliteration results in various abnormalities which may be apparent in the newborn infant. These include fistula resembling ileum, a prolapsed loop of intestine through the umblicus and a fistula draining intestinal contents. The tract may contain ectopic tissue of stomach, colon or pancreas. Although this malformation should be recognizable at birth, 40 % of patients are not treated until after the first month of life. In the past 28 months since the Samsung Medical Center opened its doors to public, the authors have treated 4 cases of patent omphalomesenteric duct remnant including one case of T-shaped total prolapse of the duct and adjacent ileum. These cases will be discussed and the literature reviewed.
This study investigated the contamination of trace metals on edible visceras : tongue, intestine, lung, testis, gira, blood, liver, stomach, and kidney. The edible visceras were selected at random from ten markets in Seoul. The edible visceras underwent freeze drying prior to analysis. The contents of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, magnases, molybdenum, lead, and zinc were detected by ICP(Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrophotometry). The results showed that the levels of trace metals in all the samples fall within the tolerance limit and cadmium in lung tended to be high(>0.1 ppm). Therefore, we may study and investigate continuously on the food contamination of heavy metals for the public health.
The Dongjung Au-Ag-Cu mine area was seriously contaminated with As and heavy metals-Cd, Cu, Hg, Mn, Pb and Zn etc. Those elements were highly accumulated in plants grown at farmland as well as farmland soil. Stream waters and groundwater which has been used as drinking water around the mine site contain high levels of heavy metals, especially As. As a result of human health risk assessment using EHS(Extraction of Heavy metals in Stomach and Small intestine) test for bioaccessible contents of heavy metals, there is a potential of cancer and adverse effects on human health for the residents of the mine area.

To investigate the food organisms of the Tridentiger trigonocephalus during the juveniles stage, the stomach contents of fish, captured in the intertidal zone of Chungchongnam-do Sochon-gun Su-myon Dodun-ri getween on early June from end of May 1999, were observed. Total length of the juveniles of T. trigonocephalus was 5.5mm∼9.0mm size, and the participation rate of feeding was 68.5%. Main food organisms were such as copepods, shrimp larvae, polychaete larvae, and these occupied more than dry weight 2%. Copepods among them dominated the most quantitys by average 67.5%, and next, food organismsms appeared much by order of polychaete larvae and shrimp larvae etc.. Therefore, most important food organisms of juvenile stage of T. trigonocephalus were copepods, polychaete larvae, shrimp larvae etc.
The feeding habits of brown barracuda (Sphyraena pinguis) were analyzed using the stomach contents of monthly samples collected from coastal waters of Gadeok-do, Korea from January to December, 1998. Brown barracuda occurred mainly from summer to autumn in the study area, and ranged from 15 to 35 cm in standard length. Brown barracuda was a piscivorous fish which, mainly consumed teleost fish such as anchovy (Engranlis japonicus) and chefoo thryssa (Thfssa kammalensis). Its diet also included small quantities of shrimp and cephalopods. Although smaller fishes (<25 cm SL) consumed shrimp and cephalopods as well as fish, larger fishes (>30 cm SL) consumed exclusively teleost fish. The prey size increased with increase of fish size.
This study investigated in vitro antioxidant activity of Sonchus oleraceus L. by extraction solvent, which were examined by reducing power, hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity(HRSA) and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assays. 70% MeOH extract had the greatest reducing power while EtOH extract had the greatest HRSA. The antioxidant activity of S. oleraceus extracts was concentration dependent and its $IC_{50}$ values ranged from 47.1 to $210.5\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $IC_{50}$ of 70% MeOH, boiling water and 70% EtOH extracts were 47.1, 52.7 and $56.5\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. 70% MeOH extract of S. oleraceus contained the greatest amount of both phenolic and flavonoid contents. The extracts tested had greater nitrite scavenging effects at lower pH conditions. The cytotoxic activity showed that EtOH extract had the best activity against the growth of stomach cancer cell. These results suggest that S. oleraceus extract could be used as a potential source of natural antioxidants.
The feeding habits of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) were studied based on an examination of the stomach contents of 512 specimens collected between November 2005 and October 2006 in the South Sea of Korea. The specimens ranged in fork length (FL) from 23.4-37.5 cm. Chub mackerel is a piscivore and consumes mainly Teleosts such as Engraulis japonicus. Its diet also includes amphipods, crabs, Euphausia, chaetognaths and shrimp. Smaller individuals (<26 cm FL) consume mainly crabs. The proportion of these prey items decreases with increasing fish size, and this decrease paralleles the increased consumption of fish. The prey size increases with S. japonicus size.

The southern rough shrimp, Trachysalambria curvirostris (Stimpson 1860) (formerly known as Trachypenaeus curvirostris) occur in the East China Sea, Korea and Japan to China(Kubo, 1949; Paulinose, 1982), and is locally abundant species in the coastal areas of Korea(Kim, 1997). The main investigations into diets of shrimps have been on the Penaeidae(Chong & Sasekumar, 1991; Wassenberg & Hill, 1993), Crangonidae(Pihl & Rosenberg, 1984; Allen, 1966; Boddeke et at., 1986). (omitted)
Potential antioxidant activities of methanol and water extracts of Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense (CJ) leaves were examined. The reducing power and hydroxyl raical-scavenging activity assays showed that the methanol extract had a significantly higher activity than the water extract. In addition, the methanol extract showed a concentration-dependent reducing power, ranging from 0.228 to 1.072($0.1{\sim}0.5\;mg/mL$), as well as a high DPPH free radical-scavenging activity($EC_{50}=40.25\;{\mu}/mL$). The total phenolic(as tannic acid) and flavonoid(as quercetin) contents of the extract were 62.41 mg/g and 13.48 mg/g, respectively. The cytotoxic activity indicated that the methanol extract has an inhibition activity in the stomach carcinoma cell (35.40%), suggesting that the methanol extract of CJ leaves could be used as a potential source of pharmaceutical material.
Morgagni, in 1760, 1st. described the findings of substernal herniation of abdominal contents into the thoracic cavity, based upon 25 postmortem dissections. Herniation through the foramen of Morgagni is the rarest occurrence of the congenital diaphragmatic hernias and is usually a few symptoms. With the increasing use of routine chest roentgenogram & the need to exclude the possibility of a mediastinal neoplasm, most such cases are brought to the attention of a surgeon. We had experienced 2 cases of Morgagni hernia, which one caused a simple mechanical intestinal obstruction & diagnosed as acute appendicitis with perforation & another one was diagnosed as mediastinal lipoma on routine chest X-ray film at arrival due to traffic accident. We had performed left paramedian abdominal incision as misdiagnosis of acute appendicitis with perforation and repair of the defect and returned transverse colon & stomach into abdominal cavity in one patient. And in another patient, we preferred to approach through right thoracotomy incision and then left upper paramedian abdominal incision and returned the omentum into the abdominal cavity. The post-operative courses were in uneventful and we report these cases and review and discuss the literatures.
