Filaments and Dense Cores in IC5146: Roles of Gravity, Turbulence, and Magnetic Field

  • Filamentary structures pervade the whole kind of molecular clouds from low- to high-mass star-forming clouds, and the non-star-forming clouds. It is supposed to be a prerequisite stage of star formation, and hence how filaments and dense cores form is one of the critical questions in the early star formation study. We investigated the dynamics and chemistry of dense cores in IC5146 using TRAO FUNS (TRAO Survey of the nearby Filamentary molecular clouds, the Universal Nursery of Stars) data. In addition, we performed polarization observation using JCMT Pol-2 polarimetry to investigate the magnetic field morphology within a core-scale. In the presentation, we will present the result of TRAO FUNS and JCMT/Pol2 observation toward the filaments and dense cores in the IC5146. We aim to reveal the roles of gravity, turbulence, and magnetic field in the formation of dense cores in the western hub-filament structure of IC5146.

Effect of Recent Star Formation of Galaxies on their Chemical Abundance Estimation

  • We investigate the effect of recent star formation (RSF) on the α-elements-to-iron ratio ([α/Fe]) estimation for galaxies. Measuring galactic [α/Fe] is a powerful tool to pinpointing the timescale of chemical evolution and star formation. Our working hypothesis is that, with increasing stellar surface temperature, absorption equivalent width (EW) of α-elements decreases faster than that of Fe-peak elements, and thus RSF will lower the line ratio of EW(α)/EW(Fe). Moreover, young stars outshine, effectively lowering EW(α)/EW(Fe) of integrated light of RSF galaxies. Here we test our hypothesis using SDSS (optical spectrophotometric), GALEX (UV photometric) and IllustrisTNG datasets, and show that, if RSF is not considered thoroughly, EW(α)/EW(Fe) lowered by RSF can be routinely misinterpreted as low [α/Fe]. We discuss possible implications of the result in the context of the conventional [α/Fe]-mass relation of galaxies.

PATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF STAR FORMATION ACTIVITY ON NGC 253 BY FIR AND RADIO EMISSION LINES

  • The aim of this research is to reveal the spatial distribution of the star formation activity of nearby galaxies by comparing CO molecular emission lines with the large area observation in far-infrared (FIR) lines. We report the imaging observations of NGC 253 by FIR forbidden lines via FIS-FTS and CO molecular lines from low to high excitation levels with ASTE, which are good tracers of star forming regions or photo-dissociation regions, especially spiral galaxies, in order to derive the information of the physical conditions of the ambient interstellar radiation fields. The combination of spatially resolved FIR and sub-mm data leads to the star formation efficiency within galaxy. The ratio between the FIR luminosity and molecular gas mass, $L_{FIR}/M_{H_2}$, is expected to be proportional to the number of stars formed in the galaxy per unit molecular gas mass and time. Moreover the FIR line ux shows current star formation activity directly. Furthermore these can be systematic and statistical data for star formation history and evolution of spiral galaxies.

  • 2009년 이후 오디션 프로그램을 통해 배출된 스타들은 연예기획사에서 만들어진 스타와 달리 시청자들과 친숙한 유대관계를 맺는 과정을 거치며 등장했다. 이 연구는 2020년 jtbc 팬텀싱어3에 출연했던 성악가 강동훈과 그의 팬카페를 중심으로 오디션 출신 스타의 인터넷 라이브 방송(라방)의 특징과 역할, 정체성을 알아보는 사례연구이다. 연구 결과, 팬카페가 만들어지기 전부터 SNS를 중심으로 팬들이 결집하면서 팬들의 요청에 의해 '라방'이 시작되었고, 강동훈의 '라방'은 팬들이 적극적으로 참여하는 '형식 없는 형식의 참여형 토크 쇼'로서 팬들의 유대감과 소속감을 높이며 팬덤의 활성화를 촉진시켰다. 스타와 팬 모두 '라방'을 '서로를 알아가는 소통의 창구'로 인식했으며 '즉시성을 가진 댓글 소통'으로 TV 속에서 재현된 비현실적인 모습이 아니라 친숙하고 꾸밈없는 스타의 진솔한 모습 볼 수 있다는 점에 만족감을 드러냈다. '라방'은 스타의 일상생활, 음악활동, 방송출연, 취미 등 다양한 내용으로 구성되었으며 팬들의 적극적인 참여로 스타와 팬들의 일상사를 공유하면서 '라방'을 보지 않는 사람들과 '미학적 차별화'를 하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

Feedback-regulated star formation and escape of LyC photons from mini-haloes during reionization

  • Reionisation in the early Universe is likely driven by dwarf galaxies. Using cosmological RHD simulations, we study star formation and the escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons from mini-haloes with Mhalo<108Msun. We find that feedback reduces star formation very efficiently in mini-haloes, resulting in the stellar mass consistent with the empirical stellar mass-to-halo mass relation derived in the local Universe. Because star formation is stochastic and dominated by a few gas clumps, the escape fraction in mini-haloes is generally determined by photo-ionization, rather than supernova explosions. We find that the photon number-weighted mean escape fraction in mini-haloes is higher (20-40%) than that in atomic-cooling haloes. Despite their high escape fractions, LyC photons from mini-haloes are of minor importance for reionization due to inefficient star formation. We confirm previous claims that stars in atomic-cooling haloes with masses $10^8M_{sun}$$10^{11}M_{sun}$ are likely to be the most important source of reionization.

Sustained Nuclear Star Formation and the Growth of a Nuclear Bulge

  • Hydrodynamic simulations of gas clouds in the central hundred parsecs region of the Milky Way that is modeled with a three-dimensional bar potential are presented. Our simulations consider realistic gas cooling and heating, star formation, and supernova feedback. A ring of dense gas clouds forms as a result of $X_1-X_2$ orbit transfer, and our potential model results in a ring radius of ~200 pc, which coincides with the extraordinary reservoir of dense molecular clouds in the inner bulge, the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). The gas clouds accumulated in the CMZ can reach high enough densities to form stars, and with an appropriate choice of simulation parameters, we successfully reproduce the observed gas mass and the star formation rate (SFR) in the CMZ, ${\sim}2{\times}10^7\;M_{\odot}$ and ${\sim}0.1\;M_{\odot}/yr$. Star formation in our simulations takes place mostly in the outermost $X_2$ orbits, and the SFR per unit surface area outside the CMZ is much lower. These facts suggest that the inner Galactic bulge may harbor a mild version of the nuclear star-forming rings seen in some external disk galaxies. We also find that the stellar population resulting from sustained star formation in the CMZ would be enlogated perpendicularly to the main bar, and this "inner bar" can migrate the gas in the CMZ further down to the central parsecs region.

Dual effects of ram pressure on star formation in multiphase disk galaxies with strong stellar feedback

  • We investigate the impact of ram pressure stripping due to the intracluster medium (ICM) on star-forming disk galaxies with a multiphase interstellar medium maintained by strong stellar feedback. We carry out radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of an isolated disk galaxy embedded in a 1011 M⦿ dark matter halo with various ICM winds mimicking the cluster outskirts (moderate) and the central environment (strong). We find that both star formation quenching and triggering occur in ram pressure-stripped galaxies, depending on the strength of the winds. HI and H2 in the outer galactic disk are significantly stripped in the presence of moderate winds, whereas turbulent pressure provides support against ram pressure in the central region, where star formation is active. Moderate ICM winds facilitate gas collapse, increasing the total star formation rates by ~40% when the wind is oriented face-on or by ~80% when it is edge-on. In contrast, strong winds rapidly blow away neutral and molecular hydrogen gas from the galaxy, suppressing star formation by a factor of 2 within ~200 Myr. Dense gas clumps with nH≳10 M⦿ pc-2 are easily identified in extraplanar regions, but no significant young stellar populations are found in such clumps. In our attempts to enhance radiative cooling by adopting a colder ICM of T=106K only a few additional stars are formed in the tail region, even if the amount of newly cooled gas increases by an order of magnitude.

CCD PHOTOMETRY OF THE GLOBULAR CLUSTER NGC 4372

  • We present a deep(B, V) color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 4372. According to the recent inside-out picture of Galaxy formation, this cluster is predicted to be one of the oldest globulat clusters in the Galaxy. Our CMD shows a well defined main-sequence extending ∼ 2 magnitudes below the trunoff. Despite the uncertainty that stems from the small sample size of bright stars, comparison with the Revised Yale Isochrones suggests that this cluster may indeed be one of the oldest (∼16.6 Gyrs) globular clusters in our Galaxy.

New Photometric System for CN and CH

  • During the last decade, there has been a dramtic paradigm shift on the definition of the globular cluster (GC) systems. The decades-long lighter elemental variation issue in GC stars is now considered to be a generic feature of normal GCs in our Galaxy, most likely engraved during the multiple-phase normal GC formation. In this talk, we will introduce the new photometric system, so-call the JWL System, to measure CN and CH abundances in multiple stellar populations in GCs. The utility and the future application of the JWL System will be discussed.

PHOTOMETRIC EVOLUTION OF ELLIPTICAL GALAXIES

  • We have examined the photometric evolution of elliptical galaxies, using stellar evolutionary models covering the wide ranges of metallicity and mass, and the different IMFs (simple IMP & time-dependent bimodal IMF). The model with a time-dependent bimodal IMF can reproduce the observed integrated magnitudes and colors at all wavelengths. The computed model shows that the star formation in elliptical galaxies is still going on, although the number of newly born stars is very small. The chemical evolutionary effect is clearly seen in the C-M diagram of computed elliptical galaxies.
