The transient response of an airfoil to a rapidly deploying spoiler is numerically investigated using the turbulent compressible Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions. Algebraic Baldwin-Lomax model, Wilcox $\kappa-\omega$ model, and SST $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model are used to calculate the unsteady separated flow due to the rapid spoiler deployment. The spoiler motion relative to a stationary airfoil is treated by an overset grid hounded by a Dynamic Domain-Dividing Line which has been devised by the authors. The adverse effects of the spoiler influenced by the spoiler location and the hinge gap are expounded. The numerical results are in reasonably good agreement with the existing experimental data.

Electric fans, which consist of axial blades, are operated by the induction motor. In this paper, the objective of this study is the performance improvement of the base model fan using the design optimization. In order to aerodynamic analysis, computational simulations are performed using commercial tool ANSYS-CFX ver. 14.5. And k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model is used for the CFD analysis. The design variables are set up as sweep and lean angles. Volumetric flow rate and torque of the fan blades are fixed to objective function. The optimized model is shown the increment of the volumetric flow rate and the reduction of the torque compared with the base model. The experimental procedure is followed KS C 9301. CFD results and experimental results are fairly well matched.

Numerical analysis was conducted as a preliminary study for evaluating the dual bell nozzle. For future parametric studies, a dual bell nozzle was designed, and thereafter inlet condition, turbulence model, and the number of optimum grids were determined. Dual bell nozzle was designed based on the KSLV-II first stage nozzle. Inlet condition was determined to frozen flow model of non-reacting eight species by comparing with the design values. SST $k-{\omega}$ model turned out to be suitable as turbulence model. About 150 thousand of the grids were selected after grid sensitivity tests. Based on the results determined in this study, we plan to investigate performance gain of the KSLV-II by adopting a proposed dual bell nozzle.

To identify the detailed 3D flow characteristics of a model scramjet engine, a unified 3D numerical analysis was performed. The numerical domain of concern includes the entire flow path of the model scramjet engine extending from the intake to the nozzle exhaust. Turbulent models($k-{\omega}$ SST and low Reynolds number k-e with Sarkar model) were applied with comparison of experiment result. Intake side wall's effect on flow characteristics was analyzed in view points of flow quality at inlet duct and near the flame holder as well. The code is paralleled with multi-block feature using MPI(Massage Passing Interface) library to speed up the 3D calculation.
The fluid flow over structures has been widely investigated by many researchers because its extensive application in offshore structures, skyscrapers, chimneys and cooling towers, brides. In the viewpoint of reducing the drag for offshore structure, it becomes challenging problem in the field of hydrodynamic of offshore structure. The purpose of this study is to investigate a flow over a square cylinder with an attached splitter plate using RANS method. First, RANS turbulent models such as a standard $k-{\omega}$ model, SST $k-{\omega}$ model, RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model, realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model, standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model were used for choosing suitable turbulent model which has the best agreement with available experimental result. Drag of single cylinder estimated by using standard $k-{\omega}$ has a good agreement with published experimental result. Therefore, the stand $k-{\omega}$ was selected for simulation for flow over a square cylinder with an attached plate. Second, the numerical results of drag of square cylinder with an attached splitter plate in various length of an attached plate were performed using RANS method in ANSYS Fluent. In this paper, the numerical simulations were conducted at a Reynolds number of 485 and the thickness of the splitter plate is chosen as a constant value about 10% of cylinder width. The numerical results of drag coefficient of square cylinder are compared with experimental result published by other researchers. Finally, the effect of the splitter plate attached to the rear side of the square cylinder has been investigated numerically with a focus on the drag coefficient and flow characteristic. As a result, the drag coefficient decreases with an increase in splitter plate length.
In this paper, we study the effect of various turbulence models by comparing the aerodynamic characteristics and the flow patterns computed for aircraft models. An in-house CFD solver, MSAPv, that solves the three dimensional RANS equations with the turbulence model equations is used. The turbulence models used in this study are the Spalart-Allmaras model, Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST model, Coakley's $q-{\omega}$ model, and Huang and Coakley's $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. DLR-F6 WB and WBNP configurations are selected for the study. We concentrate on the separated flow pattern variations with the turbulence models at the wing-body junction and the wing-pylon junction as well as drag polar curves.
In this study, aerodynamic analyses have been conducted for 4-Bladed Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) configuration and the results are compared with experimental data. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation with LES turbulence model is solved for unsteady flow problems. In addition, the computation results by standard k-${\omega}$ and SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence models are also presented and compared. An experiment model of 4-Bladed VAWT model has been designed and constructed herein. Experimental tests for aerodynamic performance of the present VAWT model are practically conducted using the vehicle mounted testing system. Comparison results between the experiment and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses are presented in order to show the accuracy of CFD analyses using the different turbulent models.

The comparison of two commercial codes(FLUENT and STAR-CCM+) and an open-source code(OpenFOAM) are carried out for the aerodynamic analysis of flight vehicles at low speeds. Tailless blended-wing-body UCAV, main wing and propeller of HALE UAV(EAV-3) are chosen as geometries for the investigation. Using the same mesh, incompressible flow simulations are carried out and the results from three different codes are compared. In the linear region, the maximum difference of lift and drag coefficients of UCAV are found to be less than 2% and 5 counts, respectively and shows good agreement with wind tunnel test data. In a stall region, however, the reliability of RANS simulation is found to become poor and the uncertainty according to code also increases. The effect of turbulence models and meshes generated from different tools are also examined. The transition model yields better results in terms of drag which are much closer to the test data. The pitching moment is confirmed to be sensitive to the existence and the location of transition. For the case of EAV-3 wing, the difference of results with ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model is increased when Reynolds number becomes low. The results for the propeller show good agreement within 1% difference of thrust. The reliability and uncertainty of three codes is found to be reasonable for the purpose of engineering use. However, the physical validity and reliability of results seem to be carefully examined when ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model is used for aerodynamic simulation at low speeds or low Reynolds number conditions.
Turbulent flow analysis is conducted around the multi-stage launch vehicle including base region and detachment motion of strap-on boosters due to resultant aerodynamic forces and gravity is simulated. Aerodynamic solution procedure is coupled with rigid body dynamics for the prediction of separation behavior. An overset mesh technique is adopted to achieve maximum efficiency in simulating relative motion of bodies and various turbulence models are implemented on the flow solver to predict the aerodynamic forces accurately. At first, some preliminary studies are conducted to show the importance of base flow for the exact prediction of detachment motion and to find the most suitable turbulence model for the simulation of launch vehicle configurations. And then, developed solver is applied to the simulation of KSR-III, a three-stage sounding rocket researched in Korea. From the analyses, after-body flow field strongly affects the separation motions of strap-on boosters. Negative pitching moment at initial stage is gradually recovered and a strap-on finally results in a safe separation, while fore-body analysis shows collision phenomena between core rocket and booster. And a slight variation of motion is observed from the comparison between inviscid and turbulent analyses. Change of separation trajectory based on viscous effects is just a few percent and therefore, inviscid analysis is sufficient for the simulation of separation motion if the study is focused only on the movement of strap-ons.
