Flash memory has several features such as low~power consumption and fast access so that there has been various research on using flash memory as new storage. Especially the Solid State Disk which is composed of flash memory chips has recently replaced the hard disk. At present, SSD adopts the multi-channel and multi-way architecture to exploit advantages of parallel access. In this architecture, data are written on SSD in a unit of a superblock which is composed of multiple blocks in which some blocks are put together. This paper proposes two schemes of selecting, segmenting and re-composing victim superblocks to optimize concurrent processing when a buffer flush occurs. The experimental results show that 35% of superblock- based write operations is reduced by selecting victims and additional 9% by composition of superblock.

In this paper, we propose a system-level simulator for the performance analysis of a Solid-State Disk (SSD) in PC environment by using TLM (Transaction Level Modeling) method. Our method provides quantitative analysis for a variety of architectural choices of PC system as well as SSD. Also, it drastically reduces the analysis time compared to the conventional RTL (Register Transfer Level) modeling method. To show the effectiveness of the proposed simulator, we performed several explorations of PC architecture as well as SSD. More specifically, we measured the performance impact of the hit rate of a cache buffer which temporarily stores the data from PC. Also, we analyzed the performance variation of SSD for various NAND Flash memories which show different response time with our simulator. These experimental results show that our simulator can be effectively utilized for the architecture exploration of SSD as well as PC.

Flash memory is becoming widely prevalent in various area due to high performance, non-volatile features, low power, and robust durability. As price-per-bit is decreased, NAND flash based SSDs (Solid State Disk) have been attracting attention as the next generation storage device, which can replace HDDs (Hard Disk Drive) which have mechanical properties. Especially for the single package SSD, if channel number or FIFO buffer size per channel increases to improve performance, the size of a controller and I/O pin count will increase linearly with channel numbers and form factor will be affected. We propose a novel technique which can minimize form factor by optimizing the number of NAND flash channels and the size of interface FIFO buffer in the SSD. For SSD with 10 channel and double buffer, the experimental results show that buffer block size can be reduced about 73% without performance degradation and total size of a controller can be reduced about 40% because control block per channel and I/O pin count decrease according to decrease channel number.

This paper has proposed parallel BCH, one of error correction coding methods which has been used to NAND flash memory for SSD(solid state disk). To alter error correction capability, the proposed design improved reliability on data block has higher error rate as used frequency increasingly. Decoding parallel process bit width is as two times as encoding parallel process bit width, that could reduce decoding processing time, accordingly resulting in one half reduction over conventional ECC.
Traditional technologies that are used to improve the performance of hard disk drives show many negative cases if they are applied to solid state drives (SSD). Access time and block sequence in hard disk drives that consist of mechanical components are very important performance factors. Meanwhile, SSD provides superior random read performance that is not affected by block address sequence due to the characteristics of flash memory. Practically, it is recommended to disable prefetching if a SSD is installed in a personal computer. However, this paper presents a combinational method of a prefetching scheme and a memory management that consider the internal structure of SSD and the characteristics of NAND flash memory. It is important that SSD must concurrently operate multiple flash memory chips. The I/O unit size of NAND flash memory tends to increase and it exceeded the block size of operating systems. Hence, the proposed prefetching scheme performs in an operating unit of SSD. To complement a weak point of the prefetching scheme, the proposed memory management scheme adaptively evicts uselessly prefetched data to maximize the sum of cache hit rate and prefetch hit rate. We implemented the proposed schemes as a Linux kernel module and evaluated them using a commercial SSD. The schemes improved the I/O performance up to 26% in a given experiment.

Although there are many efficient techniques to minimize the speed gap between processor and the memory, it remains a bottleneck for various commercial implementations. Since secondary memory technologies are much slower than main memory, it is challenging to match memory speed to the processor. Usually, hard disk drives include semiconductor caches to improve their performance. A hit in the disk cache eliminates the mechanical seek time and rotational latency. To further improve performance a divided disk cache, subdivided between metadata and data, has been proposed previously. We propose a new algorithm to apply the SSD that is flash memory-based solid state drive by applying FTL. First, this paper evaluates the performance of such a disk cache via simulations using DiskSim. Then, we perform an experiment to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm.
During several decades, hard disk drive(HDD) has been used in most computer systems as secondary storage and, however, the performance enhancement of HDD is limited by its mechanical properties. On the other hand, although the flash memory based solid state drive (SSD) has more advantages over HDD such as high performance and low noise, SSD is still too expensive for common usage and expected to take several years to replace HDD completely. Therefore, SSD caching mechanism using the SSD as a cache of high capacity HDD has been highlighted lately. The representatives of SSD caching mechanisms are typically bcache, dm-cache, Flashcache, and EnhanceIO. Each of them has its own internal mechanism and implementation, and this makes them to show their own pros. and cons. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of each SSD caching mechanisms and compare the performance of them under various workloads. We expect that our contribution will be useful to enhance the performance of SSD caching mechanisms.
