This study examined how a Structured Reading Framework (SRF) is related to improving students' critical thinking ability in an argument-based inquiry approach, called the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach. A total of 75 $8^{th}$ graders participated in the study, with 34 in the control group and 41 in the treatment group. The gains in critical thinking skills were compared between two groups, and relationships among the components of the reading framework and the critical thinking skills were explored at the group level. Result indicates that the treatment group who used the SRF had larger gains in critical thinking scores than control group who used the Original Reading Framework (ORF). In addition, results show that the correlations between Reading Framework (RF) components and critical thinking scores are statistically significant in the treatment group, while no correlations exist in the control group. It appears that using the SRF have an impact on developing students' critical thinking ability by providing a scaffold to assist argumentation practice.
Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an effective and environment friendly technique; it possesses extensive potential towards producing high-energy density solid fuels. it is a carbonization method of thermochemical process at a relatively low temperature ($180-250^{\circ}C$). It is reacted by water containing raw material. However, the production and quality of solid fuels from HTC depends upon several parameters; temperature, residence time, and pressure. This study investigates the influence of operating parameters on solid fuel production during HTC. Especially, when food waste was reacted for 2 hours, 4 hours, and 8 hours at $200^{\circ}C$ and 2.0-2.5 MPa, Data including heating value, proximate analysis and water content was consequently collected and analyzed. It was found that reaction temperature, residence time are the primary factors that influence the HTC process.
Objectives: Wastewater treatment plants typically produce a large volume of waste sludge. In this study, the conditioning and dewatering properties of a digested and thickened sludge from an industrial wastewater treatment plant were investigated in order to improve the dewaterbility of the sludge. Methods: Jar-tests and Buchner funnel tests were carried out to assess the conditioning and dewatering properties of a waste sludge. TTF (Time to Filter Test) and SRF (Specific Resistance to Filtration) were adopted as the indices of sludge dewaterbility. Results: The valuation indices influencing the dewaterbility of the waste sludge, including TTF, SRF, water contents, VS/TS ratio and turbidity, were measured. The TTF and SRF of the digested and thickened sludge were decreased to 40 sec, $3.43{\times}10^{12}$ m/kg, and 39 sec, $1.09{\times}10^{12}$ m/kg, respectively. Conclusions: The conditioner composed of natural inorganic materials turned out to be effective in the reduction of sludge water contents.
Identifying disease genes from human genome is a critical task in biomedical research. Important biological features to distinguish the disease genes from the non-disease genes have been mainly selected based on traditional feature selection approaches. However, the traditional feature selection approaches unnecessarily consider many unimportant biological features. As a result, although some of the existing classification techniques have been applied to disease gene identification, the prediction performance was not satisfactory. A small set of the most important biological features can enhance the accuracy of disease gene identification, as well as provide potentially useful knowledge for biologists or clinicians, who can further investigate the selected biological features as well as the potential disease genes. In this paper, we propose a new stepwise random forests (SRF) approach for biological feature selection and disease gene identification. The SRF approach consists of two stages. In the first stage, only important biological features are iteratively selected in a forward selection manner based on one-dimensional random forest regression, where the updated residual vector is considered as the current response vector. We can then determine a small set of important biological features. In the second stage, random forests classification with regard to the selected biological features is applied to identify disease genes. Our extensive experiments show that the proposed SRF approach outperforms the existing feature selection and classification techniques in terms of biological feature selection and disease gene identification.

This study was designed to understand characteristics of oxy-combustion of coal, dried sewage sludge and solid refuse fuel (SRF). Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted by burning the fuels with air, 21% oxygen ($O_2$)/79% carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and 30% $O_2/70%$$CO_2$. Heating rates were varied as 5, 10, 25, 40 and $100^{\circ}C/min$. Complete coal combustion was found at the heating rates of 5, 10, 25 and $40^{\circ}C/min$, and different combustion behavior was found with the gas composition at the heating rates of 10, 25, 40 and $100^{\circ}C/min$. Coal combustion with 30% $O_2/70%$$CO_2$ showed the highest while coal combustion with 21% $O_2/79%$$CO_2$ showed the lowest combustion rate. On the other hand, the combustion of dried sewage sludge and SRF showed similar combustion behavior with respect to the combustion gas composition. This suggests that oxy-combustion of dried sewage sludge and SRF which contain a large amount of volatile matter may show similar combustion behavior to their air combustion.
Soy (Glycine max, family Leguminosae) contains isoflavones and saponins as main constituents. In our preliminary study, soybean ethanol extract (SE) ameliorated scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice in the passive avoidance task. Therefore, to confirm its ameliorating effect for memory impairments, we measured its effect in scopolamine-induced memory-impaired mice in Morris water maze task. SE significantly prevented scopolamine-induced memory impairment in the Morris water maze task. SE also increased the swimming time within quadrant section of the platform on the day after the final training session test. SE protected the reduction of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression and cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) phosphorylation in the hippocampi of scopolamine-treated mice. However, SE did not inhibit acetylcholinesterase. To understand the possible role of soysaponins in memory impairments, we prepared soyasaponins-rich (butanol) fraction of soybean (SRF) and investigated its protective effect against in the passive avoidance and Morris water maze tasks. SRF ameliorated scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice. The memory impairment-ameliorating effect of SRF was more effective than that of SE. Based on these findings, soybean may improve memory impairment by regulating CREB phosphorylation and BDNF expression.
In this study, we found that dewatering properties were related with physico-chemical properties such as sludge concentration, pH, and zeta potential with sewage sludge, Ionic contents in digested sludge were in the order of $Ca^{2+}$ (14.2 mg/g) > $Mg^{2+}$ (1.9 mg/g) > $Na^+$ (1.4 mg/g) > $K^+$ (1.0 mg/g). Divalent ion more than monovalent have influenced on physico-chemical and dewatering properties. Floc size distribution in activated (AS) and digested sludge (DS) increased on lower pH range to be near isoelectric point and than specific resistance to filtration (SRF) decreased. A linear increase in SRF ($5.25\times10^{13}\sim2.86\times10^{14}$ m/kg in AS and $6.89\times10^{14}\sim1.09\times10^{15}$ m/kg in DS) was observed throughout low concentration range of 1230~9960 mg/L in AS and 2700~5400 mg/L in DS.
Usually, a LPF (low pass filter) is used in the feedback loop of a SRF (synchronous reference frame) - PLL (phase locked loop) system because the measured grid voltage contains harmonic distortions and sensor noises. In this paper, it is shown that the cut-off frequency of the LPF should be designed to suppress the harmonic ripples contained in the measured voltage. Also, a new design method for the loop gain of the PI-type controller in the SRF-PLL is proposed with consideration of the dynamics of the LPF. As a result, a better transient response can be obtained with the proposed design method. The LPF frequency and the PI controller gain are designed in coordination according to the steady state and dynamic performance requirements. Furthermore, in the proposed method, the controller gain and the LPF cut-off frequency are changed from their normal value to a transient value when a voltage disturbance is detected. This paper shows the feasibility and usefulness of the proposed methods through the computer simulations and experimental results.
To evaluate the effects of slow release fertilizer and chemical dispersant on oil biodegradation, mesocosm studies were conducted on sand seashore. The rapid removal rates (85%) of aliphatic hydrocarbons and the simultaneous decreases of n-$C_{17}$/pristane (69%) and $n-C_{18}/phytane$ (61%) ratios by the addition of slow-release fertilizer (SRF) within 37 days of experiment indicated that SRF could enhance the oil degrading activity of indigenous microorganisms in sand mesocosm. Although the growth of heterotrophic bacteria and petroleumdegrading bacteria in the mesocosm treated with $Corexit 9527^{R}$ was stimulated, the biological oil removal based on the ratios of $Corexit 9527^{R}$ and $n-C_{18}/phytane$ was inhibited. Removal rates of aliphatic hydrocarbons (56%), and n-$C_{17}$/pristane (27%) and $n-C_{18}/phytane$ (17%) ratios by the addition of chemical dispersant $Corexit 9527^{R}$ were similar or lower than those values of control (50, 60, 46%), respectively. The biodegradation activity, however, when simultaneously treated with SRF and $Corexit 9527^{R}$, was not highly inhibited and even recovered after the elimination of chemical dispersant. From these results it could be concluded that the addition of SRF enhanced the oil removal rate in oligotrophic sand seashore and chemical dispersant possibly inhibit the oil biodegradation. Hence, in order to prevent the unrestrained usage of chemical dispersant in natural environments contaminated with oil, the National Contingency Plan of Oil Spill Response should be carefully revised in consideration of the application for bioremedaition techniques.
This experiment was conducted to determine the rice quality between slowlelease fertilizer(SRF) and conventional fertilizer (CF) with the amount of 100% and 80% under direct seeding on dry paddy field, respectively. In rice quality, the percentage of matured grain and immatured grain was higher in CF with machine transplanting than in SRF with direct seeding, and the less amount of fertilizer applied, the lower percentage of immatured grain was obtained. The percentage of carbohydrate showed the difference between CF and SRF, and higher at the level of 100% applicated than that of 80% application. The contents of fat and ash were higher in CF with less fertilizer, and there was no trend to different cultural methods but it was related to the amount of fertilizer in amylose content. The nitrogen and sodium content of milled rice was high in SRF under machine transplanting as well as direct seeding. Calcium and magnesium content showed high in direct seeding but there was not significantly difference between CF and SRF.
