The purpose of this study is to provide suitable outdoor spaces for Korean elderly, examining characteristics and types of existing outdoor spaces and presenting design guideline of outdoor space for elderly. To do this, this study examined previous research papers and scholastic writings, related to elderly housing, and analyzed twelve cases of elderly housing complex. Additionally evaluation of usage pattern and physical trace carried out on twelve cases. As a result, first, the study showed that outdoor spaces for elderly were classified 5 types; entrance area of housing complex, building entrance area, outdoor living area, in & outdoor neutral area, and parking lots. Outdoor living area is subdivided into residents' public space, green space, health & sports space and landscape space. Characteristics of outdoor space are deeply related to safety, amenity, recognition and efficiency. Second, types of outdoor space in elderly facilities are very limited in verity, just facilitating with rest space, sport space, and garden space. Third, from a standpoint of barrier-free-design, twelve cases are not carefully concerning about outdoor space for elderly.

The open space of the healing facility should contribute to the psychological and social healing of the users, provide a social environment for rest, and provide a design factor to support the walking path to move to the destination-connected space. In this paper, I examined the relationship between the environmental elements, spatial devices, and the characteristics of the design factors in the open space for healing facilities. As a research method, based on the analysis of previous studies, a healing facility in modern society was defined, and the relationship between the social support and physical environment factors of the healing facility where open space was considered. Through the consideration of cases, the characteristics of the physical space environment, and the design factors of the open space in the healing facility were categorized. As a result of research, open space in the healing facility is a space to promote a social exchange of users, as a physical form for accommodating psychological and social healing functions, it is necessary to construct the connection of the external space with the internal space.

Entering into the 21st century, digital culture and the innovation of media technology have drastically changed our understanding of the concept of space. Increased availability of information made possible by technological advancement has, directly or indirectly, contributed to the development of space design, which, in turn, offers a possibility for a new paradigm in space design. Given these fundamental changes, this study seeks to explore how to understand the expansion of the concept of space. In order to answer this question, this study investigates de-materialization tendency in modern architectural design such as transparency, anti-gravity, complexity and simultaneity of space. It examines the interaction-oriented nature of space among human, information and time. Finally, based on concepts such as new hyper-surface, which transcend the limitations of space and time, it explores new emerging trends in space design.

Today, in space design boundaries between spaces have become obscure and space images are changed and overlap each other. Moreover, with the digital technology creating more informational spaces with various interactions, the set up of intelligent space has been made possible in reality. As if to deny the law of physical limitation, interfaces are used as main concept in structuring and expressing the spaces. It appears once again when each section is an expressional factor of interfaces and when meanings are produced through the systemization. Here this study analyzes the hybrid action that appear in contemporary space design. At the very moment, interface emerged as an important concept, defining contemporary space design in a very different way and present interface as a new possibility in space.

Conversion of the building can be a core strategy to activate the urban regeneration. Especially in the decayed district, the conversion or retrofit of old building can be a core catalyst to stimulate the urban regeneration. Throughout the case study, a conversion from office to dwelling, there were figured out the design strategies to respond to spatial, functional requirements. The results are as follows ; 1) The main design strategy is to articulate the space by embedding the wall, mass in the rectangular space. 2) to respond to the small size of space, the flexible, movable wall system Is adopted. This gives the selectiveness to the use of space. 3) to secure the livability of interior space, the buffer zone, a terrace space, is fully utilized. This space acts as thermal buffer zone as well as a semi-interior space.

This study is about Foucault's conceptual and methodological relevance for structural analysis of Korean traditional space design history. By Foucault's Theory, regionalism is product of the instrumentality of space, power, knowledge and provide the basis for making the operation of power both spatial and temporal. The purpose of this study is to establish topographical map of historical progress and to shed new light on the forming of identity in Korean traditional space design on the poststructural-archaeological aspect. The process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, it suggests Foucault's 'Theory of archaeology'. It mentions 'historical apriori' and archive, collateral space and general grammar as theoretical background of archaeological logic. Secondly, it clarifies 'statements' depending on the conditions that is 'episteme' in which they emerge and exist within a field of discourse. And it discuss Korean traditional space design concept as a social product on the situated character of interaction in time-space. Finally, it studies genetic variation process of Korean traditional space design based on the social progress in Korean society. And it analyses practical actions of 'Statements' in terms of general grammar and textuality.

As environmentally friendly life styles become more popular these days, the landscape elements like plants, water, stone etc. which used be considered as just simple interior props, now become the main design concept that decides the whole image of space. The purpose of this thesis is to study the various understandings and approaches on the applications of the landscape elements which are known as the most friendly and positive ways to approach the senses of users, among any other methods and techniques for environmentally friendly elements. The application types of landscape elements in interior space design are as follows; (1) incorporate the surrounding landscape elements. Keeping existing landscape elements, incorporate them into interior elements of beauty; (2) install a transition space with landscape elements; (3) green interior planes ;(4) use landscape as the main design concept; (5) use landscape as decoration elements. Many of landscape spaces incorporated into the interior are often built in a hurry and in low qualities without much consideration of the users and the space. This study intends to set a standard for the application of landscape elements in space design, after collecting various cases that applied the landscape elements in interior space, by categorizing the successful and effective applications into applicable patterns.

The aim of this essay is to broden variety and creativity of the space design in the market from now on.

Design space optimization using design space adjustment and refinement is used to optimize a knuckle in the suspension system of an automobile. This approach is a new efficient method for large-scale topology optimization by virtue of two reasons. First, design space adjustment including design space expansion and reduction is suitable for large-scale problems. Second, the design space refinement can be done globally or locally where and when necessary and thus is very effective in obtaining a target resolution with much less number of elements. Compliance minimization for a knuckle is considered with a realistic working condition to show the effectiveness and superiority of the new approach.
