  • The hot-stamping technique is used to manufacture high-strength parts by press forming by heating at a temperature above the Austenite transformation temperature and then rapid cooling. Boron steel, which contains a very small amount of boron, is one of the materials used for hot stamping. The purpose of this study is to show the microstructures and to investigate the mechanical properties under different heat-treatment conditions. The heat treatment of water quenching was conducted at the various temperatures and different elapsed times. These can be practical data useful when boron steels are used for hot stamping. Furthermore, the microstructures and mechanical properties of the spot-welded specimen with coatings and counterpart materials (SPRC 340, SPRC 590) is investigated in order to determine the welding characteristics of boron steel at different welding condition.

  • This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior and temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity of steel sheet for an auto-body. In order to Identify the temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity of SPRC35R and SPRC45E, uniaxial tension tests are performed with the variation of the strain rates from 0.001/sec to 200/sec, and the variation of environmental temperatures from $-40^{\circ}C\;to\;200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained with the static tensile test and at the intermediate strain rate is from the high speed tensile test. The experimental results show that the strain rate sensitivity increases at low temperature and it decreases at high temperature. It means that as the strain rate getting increasing, the variation of flow stress is more sensitive on the temperature. The results also indicates that the material properties of SPRC35R is more depend on the changes of strain rates and temperature than those of SPRC45E.

  • The behavior of metallic materials at high strain rates shows different characteristics from those in quasi-static deformation. Therefore, the strain rate should be considered when simulating crash events. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the dynamic tensile characteristics of SPRC440 as a function of the volume fraction of phases. As-received SPRC440 is composed of ferrite and pearlite phases. However, ferrite and martensite phases were observed after heat treatment at $730^{\circ}C$ and $780^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes, as expected by calculations based on the curves from dilatometry tests. High cross-head speed tensile tests were performed to acquire strain-stress curves at various strain rates ranging from 0.001 to $300\;s^{-1}$, which are typical in real vehicle crashes. It was observed that the flow stress increases with the strain rate and this trend was more pronounced in the as-received specimens consisting of ferrite and pearlite phases. It is speculated that the dislocation density in each phase has an influence on the strain rate sensitivity.

  • This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior of steel sheet for an auto-body including temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity. In order to identify the temperature-dependent strain rate sensitivity of SPRC35R, SPRC45E and TRIP60, uniaxial tensile tests are performed with the variation of the strain rates from 0.001/sec to 200/sec and the variation of environmental temperatures from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained from the static tensile test and that at the intermediate strain rate is obtained from the high speed tensile test. Experimental results show that the variation of the flow stress and fracture elongation becomes sensitive to the temperature as the strain rate increases. It is observed that the dynamic strain aging occurs with TRIP60 at the temperature above $150^{\circ}C$. Results also indicate that the flow stress and tincture elongation of SPRC35R are more dependent on the changes of strain rates and temperature than those of SPRC45E and TRIP60.

  • Most auto-body members fabricated by the sheet metal forming process. During this process the thickness and material properties of the sheet metal are changed with the residual stress and plastic strain. This paper deals with the material properties of the sheet metal at the high strain rate considering the pre-strain effect. Specimens are selected from sheet metals for outer panels and inner members, such as SPCEN, SPRC45E, SPRC35R and EZNCD. The specimens are prepared with the pre-strain of 2, 5 and 10 % by tensile elongation in Instron 5583, which could be equivalent to the plastic strain in sheet metal forming. High speed tensile tests are then carried out with the pre-stained specimens at the strain rate of 1 to 100/sec. The experimental result informs that the material properties are noticeably influenced by the pre-strain when the yield stress of the specimens is moderate as SPCEN, SPRC35R and EZNCD. The result also demonstrates that the ultimate tensile strength as well as the yield stress is increased as the amount of the pre-strain is increased.

  • Punching, blanking, trimming and slitting are widely used in shearing processes in sheet metal forming of automotive parts. In this paper the effects of clearance, cutting angle and tool sharpness on the formation of burr were investigated by experimental method in shearing processes of steel sheets, SPCEN and SPRC35E. The amount of burr and the shapes of burr were different between two kinds of steel sheets. It has been shown that the cutting angle of the shearing blade had no effects on the height of burr when the clearance was below the 10% of the steel sheet thickness, and also that the height and shape of burr were not affected by the cutting angle when the wear of shearing blade was below the 10% of the steel sheet thickness. It was known that there had been existing the critical clearance of 10 to 15% for the tested steel sheet, SPCEN and SPRC35E.

  • Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is a solid-state joining process and a rapidly growing dissimilar material welding technology for joining metallic alloys in the automotive industry. Welding tool shape and process conditions must be appropriately controlled to obtain high bonding characteristics. In this study, FSSW is performed on dissimilar materials AA5052-H32 aluminum alloy sheet and SPRC440 steel sheet, and the influence of the shape of joining tool and tool insertion depth during joining is investigated. A new intermetallic compound is produced at the aluminum and steel sheets joint. When the insertion depth of the tool is insufficient, the intermetallic compound between the two sheets did not form uniformly. As the insertion depth increased, the intermetallic compound layer become uniform and continuous. The joint specimen shows higher values of tensile shear load as the diameter and insertion depth of the tool increase. This shows that the uniform formation of the intermetallic compound strengthens the bonding force between the joining specimens and increases the tensile shear load.
