  • The authors examined the variations of environmental factors, the distributions of cyanobacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, and microorganisms that inhibit the growth of Anabaena cylindrica according to development and extinction of cyanobacterial bloom at a site in Daechung Dam reservoir. And certified the relationship between each other. Water temperature variated in a typical pattern. pH and concentrations of dissolved oxygen and chlorophylla was high in bloom period, and lowered with the decline of bloom. Phosphorus played as a growth-limiting factor at this study site. Total nitrogen concentration increased during blooming period, which indicated that nitrogen has been fixed by aquatic organisms such as cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria distributed from June 17, and such cyanobacterial species as Anabaena spp., Aphanizomenon spp., Microcystis spp., Oscillatoria spp. and Phormidium spp. was detected during study period. Anabaena spp. distributed relatively highly distributed from July 23 to September 22, and disappeared completely at September 29. Heterotrophic bacterial and cyanobacterial populations varied inverse-proportionally. There was a relevancy between the variations of Anabaena spp., heterotrophic bacteria, and microorganisms that inhibit the growth of Anabaena cylindrica. Microorganisms that inhibit the growth of Anabaena cylindrica distributed from early growth phase of Anabaena spp. population to immediately after the extinction of Anabaena spp. With the population of Anabaena cylindrica growth-inhibiting microorganisms decreasing, increases of heterotrophic bacterial population followed it. Thease results indicate that microorganisms have a part in the extinction of cyanobacterial bloom, especially at its destroying period.

  • Fusarium spp. were isolated from the postharvest fruit rot of oriental melon fruits at commercial fruit markets in Korea during 2001 to 2003. The decayed fruits were covered with the fungal mycelia and eventually soft rotted. The disease started at the fruit stalk area, the calyx end of the fruit and skin of fruit. As the disease advanced, white to pinkish mycelia covered with the surface of decayed fruit. The cultural and morphological characteristic of Fusarium spp. were compared with descriptions of those reported previously, and identified as Fusarium equiseti, F. graminearum, F. moniliforme, F. proliferatum, F. sambucinum, and F. semitectum. Pathogenicity of the isolates was proved by artificial wound and unwound inoculation onto the healthy fruits. Two days after inoculation, aerial mycelia were noticed on the wound inocultion region of the fruit and developed soft rot symptoms. Although Fusarium spp. causing fruit rot disease in oriental melon have been reported in Korea, identification of the those species was not described. Therefore, this is the first report of Fusarium spp. causing postharvest fruit rot on oriental melon in Korea.

  • In a survey of seed-borne mycofloras of Glycine max, 21 species have been isolated. Alternaria tenuis, Aspergillus spp., Cercospora kikuchii, Penicillium spp. and Fusarium spp. were the predominant fungi. C. kikuchii was isolated more often from purple stained seed than from unstained seed, and Fusarium spp., Phomopsis sp., Aspergillus spp. and Penicillium spp. were isolated less frequently in stained than unstained seeds. In inoculation experiments, C. kikuchii, Colletotrichum dematitum, Phomopsis sp. produced mild to severe symptoms on leaves when suspension of their conidia and mycelia were sprayed on to plants. In soil inoculation experiments, Fusarium oxysporum, F. moniliforme and F. semitectum showed pathogenicity causing seed rot and seedling blight.

  • A major cause of diarrhea in a dog is an infection with bacteria which include Salmonella spp., Campylobacter (C.) spp., and Clostridium (Cl.) spp.. It is fastidious to identify these bacteria by the culture. The purpose of this experiment is to devise the method for detecting Cl. perfringens, C. jejuni, C. coli, and Salmonella spp. with rapid and high sensitivity. The fecal samples collected from 71 normal and 66 diarrheic dog feces were used to compare the prevalence of the enteric pathogens and to develop a multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for clinical use. Detection of Cl. perfringens, C. coli, and C. jejuni in diarrhea feces was higher than normal feces. A developed multiplex real-time PCR is useful for determining the presence and quantity of pathogen-specific or other unique sequences with in a fecal sample.

  • A total of 3,879 cases of feces and rectal swab from patient was collected in H. hospital from January 1974 to December 1986 in Seoul. Among the materials, the number of cases of Shigella spp. isolated were 197 strains of 139 patients. Infectous pattern and antibiotic sensitivity of Shigella spp. were as follows; The range of percentage of an identified Shigella spp. among total feces and rectal swabs was $1.5{\sim}12.5%$ yearly. The isolation ratios of Shigella spp. per each patient 1.35 for male and 1.19 for female. The isolation ratio of male to female was 1.28:1 in whole group. The isolated Shigella species was 81.0% in S. flexneri, 1.1% in S. boydii and 17% in S. sonnei. The highest number of Shigella spp. was found in August and September according to monthly isolation, on the other hand the lowest number of Shigella spp. was obserbed in March. The seasonal isolation rate of Shigella spp. was 31.7% in Fall, 27.3% in Summer, 21.6% in Winter and 19.3% in Spring. The age specific frequency of Shigellosis was 46.8% in $0{\sim}9$ year group, 8.6% in $10{\sim}19$, 7.2% in $40{\sim}49$ and 6.5% in $50{\sim}59$. The antibiotics showing over 80% susceptibility against Shigella spp. were gentamicin, kanamycin, amikacin, tobramycin, cefoperazone, cefoxitin, cefamandole nafate, cefotaxine and sisomycin.

  • Dogs with canine babesiosis may present with wide variation in the severity of clinical signs, ranging from a hyperacute, shock-associated, hemolytic crisis to an inapparent, subclinical infection. Dogs typically present with the acute form of babesiosis, which is characterized by general findings such as pyrexia, weakness, mucous membrane pallor, depression, hemorrhagic anemia. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of babesia spp. infection in dogs of Seogwipo-si. A survey of canine babesia spp. infections among 173 dogs in Seogwipo-si was performed from July 2008 to August 2008. Blood samples were collected from dogs raised outdoors through cephalic or jugular vein and Babesia spp. was diagnosed by examination of blood smear stained with Giemsa stain. Of 173 dogs, 9 dogs (5.2%) were infected with the babesia spp. This result was a little lower than the prevalence of Babesia spp. in dogs of other areas.
