  • Intelligent schemes for an automatic generation of DEM (digital elevation model) are implemented. The need for these post-processing schemes is that interpolation alone produces severe blunders, however sophisticated it is. These blunders occur most seriously along the boundaries of a scene, over rivers, and along the coast. Even a state-of-the-art commercial software retains such blunders. The intelligent schemes implemented are (1) center-of-gravity and empty-center-index which quantify how evenly distributed interpolants are within in interpolation radius. (2) a segmentation scheme to discern whether or not an empty segment in stereo-match results should be interpolated, and (3) a segmentation scheme for removing noise-like features, with these methods, in the final DEM, identical coastline and river region to those in the original SPOT scenes are achieved. The DEM exhibits substantial improvements over the products of an existing commercial software.

  • This study aims to develop techniques for generating Digital Elevation Model(DEM) from SPOT Computer Compatible Tape(CCT) data, so as to present an effective way of generation of DEM for large area. As the first phase of extracting ground heights from SPOT stereo digital data, the bundle adjustment technique was used to determine the satellite exterior orientation parameters. Because SPOT data has the characteristics of multiple perspective projection, exterior orientation Parameters were modelled as a function of scan lines. In the second phase, a normalized cross correlation matching technique was applied to search for the conjugate pixels ill stereo pairs. The preliminary study showed that the matching window size of 13$\times$13 was adequate. After image coordinates of the conjugate pixels were determined by the matching technique, the ground coordinates of the corresponding pixels were calculated by the space intersection method. Then DEM was generated by interpolations. In addtion an algorithm for the elimination of abnormal elevation was developed and applied. The algorithm was very effective to improve the accuracy of the generated DEM.

  • Quantitative accuracy assessment of a SPOT DEM (Digital Elevation Model) generated by a fully automatic software is performed along the 90km long coast around Donghae city. The theoretical requirement on the layout of the CPS (Global Positioning System) check points is derived: the Nyquist sampling. Since in practice the Nyquist frequency of a terrain is difficult to determine, the relaxed requirements are introduced and 31 check points are collected accordingly. Accuracy of the SPOT DEM is calculated to be 8.9, 11.5 and 12.0m r.m.s. in latitudinal, longitudinal and elevation directions. The bias is distinguishable from zero only for elevation and is 2.2m. The simple comparison with the world's leading commercial softwares reveals the similar accuracy level.

  • The most widespread techniques for DEM generation are stereoscopy for optical sensor images and interfereometry for SAR images. These techniques suffer from certain sensor and processing limitations, which can be overcome by the synergetic use of both sensors and DEMs respectively. In this paper, different strategies for fusing SAR and optical data are combined to derive high quality DEM products. The multiresolution wavelet transform, which take advantage of the complementary properties of SAR and stereo optical DEMs, will be applied for the fusion process. By taking advantage of the fact that errors of the DEMs are of different nature using the multiresolution wavelet transform, affected part are filtered and replaced by those of the counterpart and is tested with two sets of SPOT and ERS DEM, resulting in a remarkable improvement in DEM. For the analysis of results, the reference DEM is generated from digital base map(1:5000).

  • This paper focused on generation of more accurate DEM and analysis of accuracy. For this, we applied suitable sensor modeling technique for each satellite image and automatic pyramid matching using image pyramid was applied. Matching algorithm based on epipolarity and scene geometry also was applied for stereo matching. IKONOS, Quickbird, SPOT-5, Kompsat-2 were used for experiments. In particular, we applied orbit-attitude sensor modeling technique for Kompsat-2 and performed DEM generation successfully. All DEM generated show good quality. Assessment was carried out using USGS DTED and we also compared between DEM generated in this research and DEM generated from common software. All DEM had $9m{\sim}12m$ Mean Absolute Error and $13m{\sim}16m$ RMS Error. Experimental results show that the DEMs of good performance which is similar to or better than result of DEMs generated from common software.

  • The purpose of this paper is to estimate the attitude and the position of SPOT satellite which are needed in producing DEM(Digital Elevation Model) using SPOT satellite image pairs. DEM extraction is consists of three parts. First part is the modeling of satellite position and atitude, second part is the matching of two images to find corresponding point of them and third part is to calculate the elevation of each point by using the result of the first and second part. For modeling inaccessible area, extended modeling algorithm which removes the GCP(Ground Control Point) most errorneous from the GCPs extracted from map iteratively is proposed According to the experiments using a collinearity equation, the second order polynomials are shown to the optimal for .omega.(pitch), and Zs parameters while the first order ones for .kappa.(yaw) .PHI.(roll), Xs, and Ys parameters. The input images used in this paper are 6000*6000 level 1A panchromatic digital SPOT images of Chungchong-do, Korea. With 30 GCPs, experiments on SPOT images show that the planimetric and altimetric RMS errors are 7.11m and 7.10m, respectively, for test points.

  • Tsunami disaster caused great damages and very large victims especially when occurs in urban area along coastal region. Therefore information of evacuation in a map is very important for disaster preparedness in order to minimize the number of victims in affected area. Here, information generated from remote sensing satellite data (SPOT 5 and DEM) and secondary data (administration boundary and field survey data) are used to simulate evacuation route and to produce a map for Padang City. Vulnerability and evacuation areas are determined based on DEM. Landuse/landcover, accessibility areas, infrastructure and landmark are extracted from SPOT 5 data. All the data obtained from remote sensing and secondary data are integrated using geospatial modelling to determine evacuation routes. Finally the simulation of evacuation route in Padang City for tsunami preparedness is provided based on the parameters derived from remote sensing data such as distances from shelters, save zones, city's landmarks and the local community experiences how they can survive with the disaster.

  • Satellite remote sensing images have much more information compared to a paper map. But these images are generally handled as particular image format gained from optical sensor, and must be processed and analyzed by computer with high priced digital image processing system. For the extraction of digital elevation model(DEM) from satellite image, we used the overlay image by SPOT-3 of Chuncheon area at the Kangwon province. According to the image condition, the precious geometric correction, the bundle adjustment for ortho-image generation and the stereo image mapping by several technical approaches were processed. So that we developed the methods of automatic DEM extraction and efficient stereo image map generation which can improve the digital image processing steps. Also, we applied the multiple direction birdeye view image for modeling and analysis using the remotely sensed overlay images with high resolution.

  • Many techniques of image processing have been developed to analyse more precisely geological information obtained from satellites. SPOT, which is a recent project in France, will furnish stereoscopic image, with good resolution of surfaces(20m $\times$ 20m or 10m $\times$ 10m), and give altitudes(DEM) which can be restored automatically. One of the researches for the exploitation of this data, intends to recognize and distinguish automatically the geomorphological forms, containing important geological information from DEM. Along which the information obtained obtained from image processing, it will play an important role in the understanding of the surface of the terrain. This study was carried out in collaboration with University of Paris-6 and Ecole National des Sciences G$\'{e}$ographiques(Institute G$\'{e}$ographique National of France: IGN).
