  • Layer-by-layer assembled multilayers of poly(ethersulfone)s were deposited on the surface of Nafion membrane for the application of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). Aminated poly(ethersulfone) (APES) and sulfonated poly(ethersulfone) (SPES) were used as a polycation and a polyanion for fabrication of the multilayer films. UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy verified a linear build-up of the multilayers of APES and SPES on the surface of Nafion. Thin multilayer films deposited on the Nafion membrane enabled methanol permeability of the membrane to decrease by 78% in comparison with the pristine Nafion. The performance of DMFCs in concentrated methanol was highly enhanced by using the multilayer modified Nafion.

  • In this work a new process was developed for the sulfonation of the chemicallly stable engineering polymer polyethersulfone as membrane materials for electrodialysis or a flow battery applications. Commercially available polyethersulfone polymer was partially sulfonated using a CSA sulfonating agent in a dichloromethane solvent, which sulfonated polyethersulfone with various sulfonation levels have been prepared. Sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) membranes with different ion capacities were prepared for the purpose of identifying cation exchange membrane properties, in an attempt to find a low cost replacement for Nafion, which most of the perfluorinated membranes, known to exhibit a prolonged service life, are expensive and difficult to process. The following features were determined: the degree of sulfonation, water uptake, thermal analysis, and electrochemical properties such as ion exchange capacities, resistivity, selectivity of ion permeation. The surface of the cation exchange membranes, decomposed with the H202-treatment, were observed by using scanning electron microscope. The area resistivities of SPES mebranes in 5N-NaOH decreased from $2,150{\;}{\Omega}-cm2$ to less than $15{\Omega}-cm2$ as the ion exchange capacity (IEC) increased from 0.62 to 1.73 millieequivlants per dry gram(meq/dg).eq/dg).

  • Cortico-cortical evoked potential (CCEP) mapping is a rapidly developing method for visualizing the brain network and estimating cortical excitability. The CCEP comprises the early N1 component the occurs at 10-30 ms poststimulation, indicating anatomic connectivity, and the late N2 component that appears at < 200 ms poststimulation, suggesting long-lasting effective connectivity. A later component at 200-1,000 ms poststimulation can also appear as a delayed response in some studied areas. Such delayed responses occur in areas with changed excitability, such as an epileptogenic zone. CCEP mapping has been used to examine the brain connections causally in functional systems such as the language, auditory, and visual systems as well as in anatomic regions including the frontoparietal neocortices and hippocampal limbic areas. Task-based CCEPs can be used to measure behavior. In addition to evaluations of the brain connectome, single-pulse electrical stimulation (SPES) can reflect cortical excitability, and so it could be used to predict a seizure onset zone. CCEP brain mapping and SPES investigations could be applied both extraoperatively and intraoperatively. These underused electrophysiologic tools in basic and clinical neuroscience might be powerful methods for providing insight into measures of brain connectivity and dynamics. Analyses of CCEPs might enable us to identify causal relationships between brain areas during cortical processing, and to develop a new paradigm of effective therapeutic neuromodulation in the future.

  • We studied the solar proton events (SPEs) associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) during the solar cycle 23 (1997-2006). Using 63 SPE dataset, we investigated the relationship among SPE, flare, and CME, and found that (1) SPE rise time and duration time depend on CME speed and the earthward direction parameter of the CME, and (2) the SPE peak intensity depends on CME speed and X-ray Flare intensity. While inspecting the relation between SPE peak intensity and the direction parameter, we found there are two groups: first group consists of large six SPEs (> 10,000 pfu at > 10 MeV proton channel of GOES satellite) and shows strong correlation (cc = 0.65) between SPE peak intensity and CME direction parameter. The second group has a weak intensity and shows poor correlation between SPE peak intensity and the direction parameter (cc = 0.01). By investigating characteristics of the first group, we found that all the SPEs are associated with very fast halo CME (> 1400km/s) and also they are mostly located at central region and within ${\pm}20^{\circ}$ latitude and ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ longitude strip.

  • ion conducting polymers have been extensively investigated because of their potential application as an electrolyte in solid state batteries [1]. Among the polymer electrolytes, solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) composed of ion conducting polymer and alkali metal salt have many advantages such as high ionic conductivity, high energy density and light weight. This made them suitable replacement for liquid electrolytes. (omitted)

  • We investigated the skin permeability and various biological activities of porcine homogenate of placenta (HP) with the highest protein contents (452.89 ${\mu}g/mg$). The content of protein in subcritical extract of HP (SPE) was decreased from the initial content of 452.9 ${\mu}g/mg$ to 262.7 ${\mu}g/mg$ at 3 h subcritical extract. The contents of amino type nitrogen (A-N) were sharply increased from 35.1 ${\mu}g/mg$ of initial content to 305.9 ${\mu}g/mg$ at 3 h subcritical extract. The HP showed a noticeable activity in terms of antioxidant capacity for ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay and especially for 2,2'-Azinobis- (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) method. HP, SPE-0.5, SPE-2 and SPE-3 showed inhibitory effect on elastase activities with an $IC_{50}$ of 46.1, 42.9, 31.6 and 34.7 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. SPEs showed more significantly inhibitory effect than HP (p<0.05). The skin permeability of the SPEs was higher than that of the HP. SPE-3 showed highest skin permeation and the permeability was significantly higher than that of HP. SPE-2 also showed significantly higher permeation than HP after 4 h. As expected, increase of extraction time significantly increased skin permeability in the subcritical extract of HP (SPE). From these results, in terms of cost and source availability, porcine placenta extracted with subcritical extraction has advantages over untreated PE and have potential as a cosmetic ingredient.

  • We investigate the dependence of solar proton events (SPEs) on solar and interplanetary type II bursts associated with solar flares and/or CME-driven shocks. For this we consider NOAA solar proton events from 1997 to 2012 and their associated flare, CME, and type II radio burst data with the following subgroups: metric, decameter-hectometric (DH), and meter-to-kilometric (m-to-km) type II bursts. The primary findings of this study are as follows. First, about half (52%) of the m-to-km type II bursts are associated with SPEs and its occurrence rate is higher than those of DH type II bursts (45%) and metric type II bursts (19%). Second, the SPE occurrence rate strongly depends on flare strength and source longitude, especially for X-class flare associated ones; it is the highest in the central region for metric (46%), DH (54%), and m-to-km (75%) subgroups. Third, the SPE occurrence rate is also dependent on CME linear speed and angular width. The highest rates are found in the m-to-km subgroup associated with CME speed 1500 kms-1: partial halo CME (67%) and halo CME (55%). Fourth, in the relationships between SPE peak fluxes and solar eruption parameters (CME linear speed, flare flux, and longitude), SPE peak flux is mostly dependent on SPE peak flux for all three type II bursts (metric, DH, m-to-km). It is noted that the dependence of SPE peak flux on flare peak flux decreases from metric to m-to-km type II burst.

  • Multi-block sulfonated poly (arylene ether sulfone) (SPES) membranes were synthesized by post-sulfonation and its properties characterized. Two types of oligomers, F-terminated and OH-terminated telechelic oligomers, were synthesized by controlling the feed ratio of dihydroxyl- and difluoro-monomers. Their number of repeating unit (X and Y) was analyzed by GPC and $^1H$ NMR. Copolymerization with F-terminated and OH-terminated telechelic oligomers via nucleophilic aromatic substitution, gave high-molecular-weight multi-block PESs. Each block length was controlled to have different values with X5Y10, X10Y10, X20Y10 and X20Y20. Successful polymerization and its successful sulfonation was confirmed by GPC and $^1H$ NMR. RH dependence of proton conductivity of multi-block SPES membranes was comparable to that of Nafion 212 at high RH conditions.

  • This study was a comparative investigation of the influence of demographic variables and teacher's empowerment on organizational effectiveness in public and private kindergartens. The subjects were 303 teachers at either public or private kindergartens. The measures used for this study were questionnaires, the SPES(School Participant Empowerment Scale) and the Organizational Effectiveness Scale. The survey used in this study and data were analyzed by means of a t-test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analyses. The results showed that teachers in public kindergartens had higher scores in terms of both empowerment and organizational effectiveness than teachers in private kindergartens. Empowerment was seen to be an influential factor in measuring teacher's organizational effectiveness.

  • The two-component type enzyme amplified amperometric DNA assay is described to use an ambient $O_2$ of the substrate of the DNA labeling enzyme. Although the assay detects DNA only at > 0.5M concentration, a concentration $\~10^6$ fold higher than the sandwich-type enzyme amplified amperometric DNA assay, it can be run with an always available substrate. The assay utilizes screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPEs) which were pre-coated by a co-electrodeposited film of an electron conducting redox hydrogel and a 37-base long single-stranded DNA sequence. The DNA in the electron conducting film hybridizes and captures, when present, the 37-base long detection-DNA, which is labeled with bilirubin oxidase (BOD), an enzyme catalyzing the four-electron reduction of $O_2$ to water. Because the redox hydrogel electrically connects the BOD reaction centers to the electrode, completion of the sandwich converts the film from non-electrocatalytic to electrocatalytic for the reduction of $O_2$ to water when the electrode is poised at 200 mV vs. Ag/hgCl. The advantage or the assay over the earlier reported sandwich type enzyme amplified amperometric DNA assay, in which the amplifying enzyme was horseradish peroxidase, is that it utilizes ambient $O_2$ instead of the less stable and naturally unavailable $H_2O_2$.
