  • We assessed the distribution of benthic macroinvertebrate at four surveying sites in Upo Wetland, a Ramsar site and the largest wetland in Korea, from February 2006 to November 2013. A long-term ecological monitoring was done monthly by using quantitative sampling method with dip net for analyzing the community change and correlation between the biodiversity and the environmental factors because environmental factors have a decisive effect on the community structure of the benthic macroinvertebrates. Total samples from the Upo Wetland area were classified into 3 phyla, 6 classes, 17 orders, 68 families, 176 species, and 25,720 individuals. Among the 176 species, 62 of the species had not been previously reported in this area. Asellus sp., Diplonychus esakii, and Gyraulus chinensis were the most common species in Upo Wetland. The change patterns of annual species diversity and species richness were calculated by using the average number of monthly occurring species and individuals. Diversity index increased from March to May and decreased after that showing lower diversity indices in July and August. It increased again in September and in October. Richness index showed similar tendency and fell around February and July, followed by a rising tendency around May and October. Correlation and regression analyses were performed with the change of biodiversity and each environmental factor. We found that water temperature have very significant positive correlation with species diversity in spring, and have significant indices in autumn and winter. On the other hand, precipitation showed a significantly negative correlation value in summer and autumn suggesting it has an effect on the community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates.

  • This study exploded the correlation between feed and livestock manure characteristics across different livestock species. The selected farms included laying hen, fattening pig, and Hanwoo farms, with visits conducted to each farm at 1-day intervals. In the experiment, feed was provided to each livestock species every day at the same scheduled time, and samples of both feed and livestock manure were collected from each farm after 1 month. The correlation analysis revealed no significant effect on the crude protein content of the feed for each livestock species and the respective livestock manure characteristics. This could be attributed to the fact that the difference in nitrogen content of each feed did not have a substantial effect on the content of the livestock manure components or the differences in individual components were similar. Based on these results, it is crucial to conduct environmental impact assessments on farms using diverse feeding management approaches for each farm.

  • Background and objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the ecological status of six areas around Geumgang River that used to be farmlands before they were restored as a riverine ecobelt. This study aims to analyze the correlation between the location environment and ecological status of the sites to identify the environmental factors affecting them. Methods: The sites are classified into four types according to restoration: terraced paddy fields, flat paddy fields, artificial wetland, and landscape forest. The survey items were divided into land use status, plant ecology, and animal ecology. Results: In terms of plant ecology, terraced paddy fields showed favorable naturality with the rate of native species above 90% and the naturalization index below 10%. In terms of animal ecology, the total number of species found in these areas was biggest in terraced paddy fields, followed by flat paddy fields, artificial wetland, and landscape forest. Regarding species diversity, terraced paddy fields also showed abundant species with an average of 1.05 to 1.09. The results of the correlation analysis showed that the forest area around the sites had the most significant effect on species diversity. The grassland and open water area showed a positive correlation with the total number of animal species and the number of dragonflies, confirming that the marshy grassland had a positive effect. As the cultivated land and urbanized area around the sites increased, it had a negative effect on the distribution of native species and the number of animal species that appeared, and a positive effect on the naturalization index. Conclusion: It is necessary to establish preemption and restoration plans for sites such as grasslands adjacent to the forest and terraced paddy fields in order to promote resilience of the diverse species returning to the purchased lands.

  • Background and objective: This study was carried out to assess the relationship between the internal and external environments and the ecological items in five sites with a high level of artificial use intensity prior to the establishment of Geumgang River riparian ecological belts. Methods: The sites were classified into forest type, cultivated land type and urbanized type in accordance with their respective locational types. Ecological items including plant ecology such as proportion, naturalization index and urbanization index of native species were analyzed and animal ecology such as the number of species and population of wild birds, amphibians and reptiles, mammals, and butterflies and dragonflies, which are indicator insects, were investigated. In addition, species diversity indices of wild birds, butterflies and dragonflies found in all the subject lands were computed. Results: Among the plant ecological items, the ratio of native species in the forest type was higher than 90%, which was a satisfactory level, while the naturalization and urbanization indices were less than 10%. The number of species in the animal ecological characteristics was reduced in the order of forest type, cultivated land type and urbanized type. As the results of correlation analysis, the internal area of the planted area showed a negative correlation with the total of individuals. The area of grasslands showed a positive correlation with the number of dragonfly species and the total number of individuals, thereby illustrating that wet grasslands have positive effects. The area of surrounding forests, as an external environment, had a negative correlation with the urbanization index (UI) but a positive correlation with the inhabitation of butterflies and the total number of species. Conclusion: The results confirmed the need for more diversified special compositions including planted land, grassland, wetland, bodies of water and waterways within the subject land in the wetland ecological belt along with the need for surrounding forest location and preservation from the perspective of purchase and restoration of land for enhancement of wider biodiversity in the future.

  • Canonical correlation analysis was applied on phytoplankton species and associated physico-chemical environmental factors of the surface mixed-later in the southwestern waters of the East Sea (Sea of Japan), Korea. Water temperature was the most significant environmental factor for the distribution of phytoplandton species among the seven factors examined in spring, and salinity in autumn. The importance of these two environmental factors was discussed with the seasonal variations of the hydrographical regime. Kuroshio indicators' and two protoperidinium species were positively associated with high water temperatures and high salinity. Small pennate diatoms and silicoflagellates seem to prefer lower temperatures, and they might compete each other for silicate nutrient resulting in lower K value in silicoflagellate species than in small diatoms. A nitrogen fixing blue-green alga, Oscillatoria erythraea, was found to be positively associated with phosphate concentration.

  • This study aimed to understand relationship between potential risky species and environmental factors at ports in Korea. During the study periods, 25 potential risky species (red tide and toxic species) representing 20 red-tide species, 5 toxic species were observed in the all ports. Skeletonema costatum (red-tide species) was predominated in all study area. This species showed positive correlation with pH, while negative correlation with dissolved oxygen (p<0.05) at Busan port. Also, this species showed positive correlation with total suspended solids and pH (p<0.05) at Ulsan port. However, Sk. costatum showed positive correlation with nitrate at Incheon port (p<0.01). Pseudo-nitzschia spp. producing amnesic shellfish poison (domoic acid) showed positive correlation with nitrate and silicate in all study areas (p<0.05). Alexandrium spp. (paralytic shellfish poison) and Dinophysis acuminata (diarrhetic shellfish poison) were affected by chemical oxygen demand (p<0.01). Our results indicated that red-tide species were affected by physical factors, while chemical factors affected toxic species.

  • The nitrate concentrations in PM$_{2.5}$ and TSP measured at Gosan, Jeju Island, Korea, between March 1998 and February 2002, are discussed. Especially, the characteristics of high nitrate concentration days were analyzed. High nitrate concentration cases in PM$_{2.5}$ were highly correlated with anthropogenic species such as NH$_4$$^{[-10]}$ , and high nitrate concentration cases in TSP were highly correlated with crustal species such as nss-Ca$^{2+}$ and nss -Mg$^{2+}$ Backward trajectory analysis results show the cases of high correlation between nitrate and anthropogenic species occurred when the air parcels moved from China, and the cases of high correlation between nitrate and crustal species occurred when the air parcels moved from Mongolia. Also, high nitrate concentration cases occurred most often in spring (65%) when the air parcels moved from Mongolia and China.ina.

  • The correlation between polymeric aluminum species of coagulant and its coagulation efficiency was investigated using several commercial polymeric Al(III) inorganic coagulants (Poly Aluminum Hydroxy Chloro Sulfate 2020 (PAHCS2020), Poly Aluminum Hydroxy Chloro Sulfate 2500 (PAHCS2500) which was introduced in Korean water treatment plants. The poly aluminum chloride (PAC), Poly Aluminum Hydroxide Chloride Silicate (PACS)) and the aluminum salts ($AlCl_3$, Alum ($Al_2(SO_4)_3$)) were used for the purpose of comparison. The comparison of the coagulation efficiency of each coagulant was made by turbidity removal through the standard jar testing procedure and the determination of the hydrolytic Al(III) species was made by the ferron method which can differentiate the monomeric aluminum species from the polymeric aluminum species. Overall, PAHCS2020 and PAHCS2500 showed the better performance in turbidity removal than the aluminum salts. The performance of coagulation was even better without adjustment of pH during the coagulation experiment. The positive correlation between polymeric aluminum species of coagulant and coagulation efficiency was found.

  • The simplification and the searching trends of complex data which assumed relationship between predictor variables and object variables are one of primary objective of ecological research. This study was aimed to apply cononical analysis consisting of canonical correlation analysis and canonical variate analysis related to lichen vegetation and several environmental variables which are elevation, height on grond, exposure side and cover values. Data collected from the Duckyoo National Park in August 1985. Lichen species was ranked by eqivocation information theory with cover values. Canonical correlation analysis was applied to one data set both set both environmental variables and lichem family. In order to make two sets of data matrix the scale of position vector ordination was calculated from the vector scalar product for lichen species. Canonical variate analysis was applied to rearranged data which was made by interval class code for environmental variables. The sharpness values was calculated in frequency of cotingency tables and the dispersion profiles of each species in classes of environmental variables was designed to extract component values based on the decomposition of expected frequencies in contingency table. The results of canonical correlation analysis revealed canonical first correlation value 0.815(89%), and second correlation value 0.083(11%). Significance test showed that the hypothesis of joint mutuallity of canonical correlation is accepted (P>0.05). The relation between canonical score of vegetation variables and that of environmental variable indicated linear tendency.

  • In this study, we investigated the correlation between the number of cyanobacterial species and the water quality factors after installation of Nakdong river weirs. Factor analyses of water quality factors were also performed. The results of correlations showed that there was no significant water quality with the cyanobacterial concentration but the correlation coefficient of nutrients increased from the upstream to the downstream. There was a significant correlation between W T and pH as important water quality factors for the growth of cyanobacteria. In the downstream region of Nakdong river, algae were more frequently detected than in the upstream region, and the blooms of algae species seem to be influenced by the higher pH and the influx of the phosphorus from the upstream tributaries. Nutrient concentration was higher in the downstream region than in the upstream region due to the effects of tributaries Geumho river and Nam river in Nakdong river. As a result of the factor analyses, nitrogen species were the principal factors in the upper region, and phorsphorus species were the principal factors in the downstream region.
