  • Objectives : This study was to investigate the effect of low frequency electroacupuncture according to acupoints combination on NOS positive neurons in the PAG and Hippocampus of Rat with adjuvant induced Rheumatoid arthritis. Methods : Arthritis was induced by intradermal injection of FCA into base of tail. Experimental group were divided into 6 group ; Normal, Control, $ST_{36}$, $SP_9$, $ST_{36}+SP_9$, and NA. Normal group was injected with normal saline and not treated electroacupuncture. Control group was injected with FCA and not treated electroacupuncture. ST36 group was injected with FCA and treated by 2 Hz electroacupuncture at $ST_{36}$. $SP_9$ group was injected with FCA and treated by 2 Hz electroacupuncture at $SP_9$. $ST_{36}+SP_9$ group was injected with FCA and treated by 2 Hz electroacupuncture at $ST_{36}+SP_9$. NA group was injected with FCA and treated by 2 Hz electroacupuncture at non acupoint. Each groups were evaluated by the number of NOS-positive neurons in PAG and hippocampus by using an image analyzer and a microscope. Results : 1. The number of NOS-positive neurons of the NA group were significantly decreased in the CA2-3. 2. The number of NOS-positive neurons of the ST36 group were significantly decreased in the PAG and CA2-3. 3. The number of NOS-positive neurons of the SP9 group were significantly decreased in the PAG and DG 4. The number of NOS-positive neurons of the ST36+SP9 group were significantly decreased in the PAG, CA1 and DG. Conclusions : It is expected that low frequency electroacupuncture can be used a treatment of rheumatoid arthritic pain and that treatment of electroacupuncture at combined acupoints is more efficient than treatment of low frequency electroacupuncture at one acupoint.

  • An alkalophilic microorganism, SH-8, was isolated from soil samples. It was a Grampositive, catalase-positive, spore-forming and motile rod which was capable of growth in aerobic condition at the initial pH 9.0 or above up to 11.0 and between 15 and $42^{\circ}C$ The characteristics of this strain resembled those of the Bacillus group of bacteria. The mutant, Bacillus sp. SH- 8M, was selected from Bacillus sp. SH-8 by U.V. mutagenesis and was able to grow at pH 6.9 up to 11.0. These two strains will be suitable for the comparative study on growth and enzyme production at various pH conditions.

  • Indole and its derivatives form a class of toxic recalcitrant environmental pollutants, Abacte-rium, strain KL-9 was isolated from soil with indole as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen. KL-9 was identified as Acinetobacter sp. on the basis of 16 S rRNA gene sequence, fatty acid and quinone compositions. This identification was also confirmed by the ability of carbon source utilization and other biochemical tests. The growth of Acinetobacter sp. KL-9 was fastest with 0.3mg/ml of indole as was inhibited by higher than 0.5mg/ml of indole in the medium, KL-9 with indole also produced indigo. The formation of indigo was stimulated inthe presence of glucose, which is not a growth-suppoting carbon source for KL-9. Additional biotransformation evidence showed that anthranilate is an intermediate for the degradation of indole KL-9.

  • Due to the need of increasing thermal efficiency, supercritical pressure and temperature have been utilized in power plants. It is well known that 9Cr1Mo steel is suitable fer use in power plants operating at supercritical conditions. Therefore, to ensure the safety and the soundness of the power plant, creep characterization of the steel is important. In this study, the creep characterization of the gCr1Mo steel using small punch creep(SP-Creep) test has been described. The applied load and the central displacement of the specimen in SP-Creep test have been converted to bearing stress and strain of uc, respectively. The converted SP-Creep curves clearly showed the typical three-stage behavior of creep. The steady-state creep rate and the rupture time of the steel logarithmically changed with the bearing stress and satisfied the Power law relationship. Furthermore, the Larson-Miller parameter of the SP-Creep test agreed with that of the tensile creep test. From the comparison with low Cr-Mo steels, the creep characteristics of 9Cr1Mo steel proved to be superior. Thus, it can be confirmed that the 9Cr1Mo steel is suitable for supercritical power plant.

  • Acetobacter strains are bacteria that can synthesize cellulose when grown on an undefined medium containing glucose. Several culture conditions affecting cellulose production by Acetobacter sp. A9 were examined by cultivating cells under shaking cultures. The addition of buffering agents, such as 3-(N-morpholino) propanesulfonic acid (MOPS) and CaCO$_3$, increased cellulose production. It suggests that pH of culture medium is important to an economical mass cellulose production. Addition of bead (Ф10 w) to culture medium stimulated 'disintegrated bacterial cellulose' production.

The intestinal caeca are of simple type and genital markings lacking in all four species. Amynthas mujuensis sp. nov. has male field with large oval papillae, each papilla with longitudinal seminal groove; paired spermathecal pores present in 6/7, 7/8 dorsally. Amynthas assimilis sp. nov. has mare field composed of paired symmetrical pear-shaped pads with broad ends laterally, axes of symmetry diagonally oriented towards posterior; spermathecal pores in 5/6, 6/7. Amynthas moakensis sp. nov. has male pores on small porophores surrounded by swollen concentric furrows, with the spermathecal pores in 6/7, 7/8, 8/9, ventrally. Amynthas sangumburi sp. nov. has male pores centered on 0.8 mm circular flat porophores, with the spermathecal pores in 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, 8/9, laterally.

  • Julpyun(traditional Korean rice cake) was prepared by adding silkworm powder(SP) in the ratio of 0%, 3%, 6%, 9% of rice flour, and tested by proximate composition, sensory evaluation, chromaticity and rheological properties. In proximate composition, as the SP increased, amounts of moisture, crude protein and ash increased proportionally. In sensory evaluation test, 6% SP added Julpyun showed the highest score in color, Julpyun added with 3% SP gave the strongest flavor. From the scores of taste, texture and overall quality, 3% SP added Julpyun was evaluated as the best. In rheometer test, hardness increased as the amount of SP increased. Gumminess and brittleness tended to decrease as the ratio of SP increased and 3% SP added Julpyun showed the high value in them.

  • A halotolerant and extracellular pretense producing yeast was isolated from traditional Meju and identified as a strain of Hansenular sp. S-9 by investigation of its microbiological characteristics. The optimum pH, temperature and NaCl concentration for growth of Hansenular sp. S-9 were pH 7.5, $30^{\circ}C$ and 0.5M, respectively. The protease production from Hansenular sp. S-9 was maximized when it was grown on BD medium containing 1.0% beef extract, 1.0% glucose and 0.5M NaCl for 72 h at $30^{\circ}C$.

  • A mutant of Mycobacterium sp. has been isolated which is capable of degrading cholesterol and plant sterol to androst-4-ene-3, 17-dione and 9-hydroxyandrostene-3, 17-dione. Also this mutant hydroxylated the steroidal nucleus at the 9 $\alpha$ position. No ring degradation inhibitory agents are required for these processes.
