Image Retrieval Using the Fusion of Spatial Histogram and Wavelet Moments (공간 히스토그램과 웨이브렛 모멘트의 융합에 의한 영상검색)

  • We present an image retrieval method for improving retrieval performance by the effective fusion of spatial histogram and wavelet moments. In this method, the similarity for spatial histograms and the similarity for wavelet moment are effectively fused in the computation of the similarity between a query image and DB image. That is, the wavelet moments feature represented in multi-resolution and the spatial histogram feature robust to translation and rotation are used to improve retrieval performance. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we use Brodatz texture DB, MPEG-7 T1 DB, and Corel Draw Photo DB. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields 5.3% and 13.8% better Performances for Brodatz DB, and 15.5% and 3.2% better Performances for Corel Draw Photo DB over the histogram method and the wavelet moment method, respectively.

Functional Properties and Antimicrobial Activity of Bamboo(Phyllostachys sp.) Extracts (대나무 추출물의 기능성 및 항균활성)

  • Yields of bamboo extracts were 1.0∼1.5% in stalks and 3.1∼3.2% (w/w) in leaves. Electron donating ability of extracts from stalks was 62% in Maengjongjuk, 55% in Somdae and 52% in Wangdae, while that of leaf extracts showed very low level. On the contrary, nitrite-scavenging activity was higher in leaf extracts than stalk extracts, and the activity was 63, 57 and 55% in leaf extracts of Maengjongjuk, Wangdae and Somdae, respectively. Antimicrobial activity was examined against 7 major strains which cause food poisoning, and extracts of bamboo stalks showed somewhat activity, while leaf extracts showed merely or no activity according to strains. But all extracts showed relatively strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and extracts of Somdae stalks and Maengjongjuk leaves showed antimicrobial antimicrobial activity against those strains on 100${\mu}\ell$/disc concentrate.

Changes in the Bacterial Flora during Kakdugi Fermentation and the Physiological Characterization of Lactic Coccal Isolates (깍두기 발효 중 균상 변화 및 젖산 구균의 생리적 특성)

  • Three distinct phases were observed in acidity change during the Kakdugi fermentation; the first increasing phase, a stable phase, and the second increase phase. Enterobacter strains were the dominant bacteria (more than 90%) just after preparation of Kakdugi. Lactobacillus and Leuconostoc sp. were the mainly isolated from properly-ripened (53 and 43%, respectively) as well as from over-ripened Kakdugi (63 and 37%, respectively). Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. paramesenteroides was the dominant one among the lactic cocci from Kakdugi. The isolates from properly-ripened Kakdugi required more amino acids for growth compared to those from over-ripened one while no difference was observed with vitamins. Their physiological characteristics such as amino acid and vitamin requirement were different from those of 9 type strains of various Leuconostoc species.

Susceptibility of Pine Wood Nematode Vectors to ULV Insecticides Sprayed from an Unmanned Helicopter (무인항공기를 활용한 유인항공기용 작물보호제에 대한 소나무재선충 매개충의 약제 감수성)

  • We assessed efficacy of spraying pesticides from an unmanned helicopter to control two insect species, Monochamus alternatus and M. saltuarius, which are vectors of pine wood nematodes. Control efficacy of thiacloprid FL (33×), acetamiprid ME (33×), and flupyradifurone SL (33×) was determined by placing caged insects in the canopy of pine trees (Pinus sp). Water-sensitive paper was used to record the spray pattern of pesticide droplets and the degree of coverage; furthermore, we investigated peripheral scattering due to spraying. The three pesticides showed > 96% control efficacy against the targeted vectors, and pesticide droplet spray patterns were similar. Peripheral scattering was observed up to 20 m in front and 10 m to the left, right, and behind the targeted area. The coverage index of all the directions at 5 and 10 m distance was 6-7 and 2, respectively.

A Survey on Clinical Practice Students' Perception of Clinical Performance Examination in a College of Korean Medicine Using the Actor Standardized Patient and Student Standardized Patient (연극인표준화환자와 학생표준화환자를 사용한 일개 한의과대학 진료수행시험(CPX)에 대한 임상실습 학생 인식 조사)

  • Objectives : This study compares clinical practice students' perception of Clinical Performance Examination (CPX) in a College of Korean Medicine using actors as Actor Standardized Patient (ASP) and enrolled students as Student Standardized Patient (SSP). Methods : Targeting the clinical practice students who completed the clinical practice education in the first semester of the fourth year in the Department of Korean Medicine, a survey was conducted on total six categories such as satisfaction with CPX using ASP and SSP, prior knowledge about clinical practice education, self-evaluation, difficulties in the process of performing the CPX, satisfaction with ASP/SSP, and familiarity with them. Results : In the results of the survey, the mean score of CPX program using SSP was higher than that of CPX program using ASP in every area. Among them, in the satisfaction with CPX itself and prior knowledge about various clinical practice education, the mean score of CPX program using SSP was statistically significantly higher than that of CPX program using ASP. Conclusions : Overall, the clinical practice students' satisfaction with CPX program using SSP was higher than that of CPX using ASP, and statistically significantly higher in some areas.

Presentation on Research Trends and Suggestion for further research and education on Objective Structured Clinical Examination and Clinical Performance Examination in Korean Medicine Education: Scoping Review (한의학교육에서 객관구조화진료시험과 진료수행평가에 대한 연구 동향과 후속 연구 및 교육에 대한 제언: 주제범위 문헌고찰)

  • Objectives : This study reviewed existing studies on clinical examination of Korean medicine to investigate the trends and gaps of existing research on clinical performance examination (CPX) or objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) in Korean medicine education. Methods : We conducted a scoping review according to the five steps suggested by Arksey and O'Malley. Six databases(RISS, OASIS, KMBASE, KISS, ScienceON, and DBpia) were searched and studies published from 2012 to July 15, 2022 were considered. The subjects of the study were limited to domestic studies about OSCE or CPX conducted in Korean medicine education. Results : Among the 25 selected papers, 17 studies implemented OSCE or CPX in practice. Those studies were conducted in 8 clinical departments and 9 of them used standardized patients. All 14 survey studies reported positive answers in satisfaction, efficacy, and self-assessment. OSCE, CPX scoring items were developed by modifying existing tools or developing through expert surveys or through literature review and significant cases. Conclusions : This study is expected to be used as basic data for following studies and promote clinical examination. From now on, the colleges of Korean medicine should proceed research on large-scale students about extended subjects through various research methods to obtain objective results that can be generalized and acquire validity and reliability. In order to promote such research, it is necessary to induce cooperation from institutions related to Korean Medicine and local universities to develop modules, implement, and conduct post-evaluation.

Breeding of Resistant Cabbage 'CT-171' to Fusarium Wilt (시들음병 저항성 양배추 품종 'CT-171' 육성)

  • A new resistant cabbage variety 'CT-171' to Fusarium wilt was bred by crossing $A337MSBC_5$ with resistance to the disease and 397-$G_6$ with good density and color. 'CT-171' was selected after combining ability, seed gathering and regional adaptability test in 2008. For breeding of resistant varieties, we investigated the development of Fusarium wilt on cabbage seedlings inoculated with Fusariumoxysporum f. sp. conglutinans by root dipping inoculation method. As a result, 'CT-171' showed higher resistance to Fusarium wilt than 'Asiaball' used as control. The maturity of new variety was 58 days and was faster than control and well suited for autumn cultivation because of cold resistance. The anthocyanin pigment of plant was not revealed. The weight, height and width of head were 1.5 kg, 14 cm and 15 cm, respectively and the core size was 5.7 cm and stable in various cultivation environments. 'CT-171' which showed good agricultural character and resistance to Fusarium wilt filed for variety protect right in Korea Seed & Variety Service on February 2013. The new variety will be appropriate for export and domestic consumption.

  • As a potential approach for non-destructive testing of concrete structures, we evaluate the time-of-flight (TOF) ultrasound tomography technique In conventional X ray tomography, the reconstructed Image corresponds to the internal attenuation coefficient However, in TOF ultrasound tomography, the reconstructed Image is proportional to the retractive index of the medium Because refractive effects are minimal for X-rays, conventional reconstruction techniques are applied to reconstruct the Image in X-ray tomography However, since ultrasound travels in curved path, due to the spatial variations in the refractive index of the medium, the path must be known to correctly reconstruct the Image. Algorithm for determining the ultrasound path is developed from a Geometrical Optics point view and the image reconstruction algorithm, since the paths are curved It requires the algebraic approach, namely the ART or the SIRT Here, the difference between the computed and the measured TOP data is used as a basis, for the iteration process First the initial image is reconstructed assuming straight paths. It then updates the path based on the recently reconstructed image This process of reconstruction and path determination repeats until convergence The proposed algorithm is evaluated by computer simulations, and in addition is applied to a real concrete structure.

Isolation and Characterization of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacterium Bacillus subtilis YK-5 from Soil (토양에서 식물생육촉진 활성을 가진 균주 Bacillus subtilis YK-5의 분리 및 특성)

  • For the isolation of a plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, strain YK-5 was selected from approximately 400 thermostable strains isolated from special soil samples. Strain YK-5 produced an antifungal compound, and optimum carbon and nitrogen sources for the production of the antifungal compound were investigated against Aspergillus flavus as a test strain. Modified LB medium containing 1% peptone, 1% yeast extract and 5% black sugar was determined to be the optimal medium for growth and antifungal compound production. Culture broth of strain YK-5 potently inhibited growth of the phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum KACC 40052 for 7 days. The plant growth-promotion function of strain YK-5 was tested against radish and rice in pot trials. Leaf number, plant height and root length in YK-5-treated radish markedly exceeded (> 60%) those of untreated radish. Leaf length and white rootlet development were markedly more prominent than in commercially-treated rice plants. Strain YK-5 was determined to be Bacillus subtilis YK-5 by physiological, chemotaxonomical, and phylogenetical analyses.

  • Among the strains isolated form the various sources, the strain AC-12 producing a powerful pectinase was selected by the extensive screening test. The selected strain was indentified and its toxicity investigated. The conditions of the pectinase production, the characteristics of the purified enzyme and the clarification effect on the apple juice were studied. 1. The selected strain AC-12 was identified by the classification method of paper and fennel and named as Aspergillus sp. AC-12. 2. As a result of the breeding test of the white mouse, no toxicity was found from this enzyme. 3. The yield of pectinase in the medium of defatted rice bran was much better than that in the medium of wheat bran. 4. The optimum conditions for the culture of the strain in the medium of defatted rice bran were that the cultural time was 72hrs, the amount of water to be added about 80%, temperature $30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$ and pH $3.0{\sim}5.0$. 5. The yield of pectinase was slightly increased by the addition of pectin to the medium of defatted rice bran and by the addition of pectin, $NaNO_3$ and $K_2HPO_4$ to the medium of wheat bran, respectively. 6. The optimum conditions for the enzyme activity were pH $3.0{\sim}4.0$ and temperature $40{\sim}50^{\circ}C$. The enzyme was stable below $40^{\circ}C$ and pH $2.0{\sim}8.0$, respectively. But above $50^{\circ}C,$ this enzyme was abruptly inactivated. The activity was slightly increased by the addition of $MnSO_4\;and\;CuSO_4.$ 7. It was regarded that the opimum temperature for the clarification of the apple juice was $40{\sim}50^{\circ}C$, the optimum pH 3.0 and the optimun concentration of the enzyme 0.1%, and the apple juice was almost clarified by the reaction at $45^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes.
