Soil Organic Carbon Dynamics in Korean Paddy Soils (우리나라 논 토양의 토양유기탄소 변동 특성)

  • Korean paddy soils have long been almost uniformly managed throughout the whole country with flooded, deep tillage, puddlling, transplanting, and uncovering after harvest. Management of soil organic carbon could be more important in the sources of green house gases. However, soil organic carbon dynamics were not been studied for Korean paddy soils. Therefore, we evaluated the changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) of paddy soils between 1999 and 2003 at the same locations nationwide except islands. Soil organic carbon tends to increase in Inceptisols, which is predominant soil order for Korean paddy soils, from 1999 to 2003. Soil organic carbon increases in topographically plain paddy soils was greater than in valley soils, and was considerably high in predominant types of paddy soils (i.e., well adapted paddy soils, sandy paddy soils, and poorly drained paddy soils) but low and stable in the saline paddy soils. We also found that clay paddy soils are greater in soil organic carbon than sandy paddy soils. Through this study, we concluded that a proper management of paddy soils could contribute to soil organic carbon storage, which imply that the Korean paddy soils could help to enhance carbon dioxide sequestration via soil organic matter into the soil.

  • Global warming due to increased carbon dioxide is perceived as one of the factors threatening the future. Efforts are being made to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in each industry around the world. In particular, environmental loads and impacts during the life cycle of SOC structures and buildings have been quantitatively assessed through a quantitative method called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). However, the construction sector has gone through difficulty in quantitative assessment for several reasons: 1) LCI DB is not fully established; 2) the life cycle is very long; 3) the building structures are unique. Therefore, it takes enormous effort and time to carry out LCA. Rather than estimating carbon emissions with accuracy, this study aims to present a simplified estimation model that allows owners or designers to easily estimate carbon dioxide emissions with little effort, given that rapid and rough decisions regarding environmental load reduction are to be made. This study performs the LCA using data from 25 road construction projects across the country, followed by multiple regression analyses to derive a simplified carbon estimation model (SLCA). The study also carries out a comparative analysis with values estimated by performing a typical LCA. The comparison analysis shows an error rate of less than 5% for 16 road projects.

A Study on the Application of FRP Hybrid Bar to Prevent Corrosion of Reinforcing Bar in Concrete Structure (콘크리트구조물 중의 철근 부식 저감을 위한 FRP Hybrid Bar의 적용성 연구)

  • Recently, the infrastructure of the marine environment has been increasing. Therefore, there has been increasing interest in increasing the durability of structures. The FRP Hybrid Bar with improved durability against corrosion was developed in recent years. On the other hand, studies that evaluate the corrosion resistance are insufficient. In this study, the corrosion resistance according to the type of rebar in concrete was assessed and analyzed. The experiment used steel bars and FRP Hybrid Bar. The corrosion test method was a galvanic current and half-cell potential method. The accelerated corrosion test was carried out by four levels (0%, 1.5%, 3%, and 6%) of chloride added to the concrete. The galvanic current measurements revealed no corrosion current in the FRP Hybrid Bar. The half-cell measurement also showed the corrosion resistance of the FRP Hybrid Bar. Therefore. FHB can be used as an alternative steel for structures where a marine environment and steel corrosion are predicted.

Electric vehicle battery remaining capacity analysis method using cell-to-cell voltage deviation (셀간 전압 편차를 활용한 전기자동차 배터리 잔존용량 분석 기법)

  • Due to the nature of electric vehicles, the batteries used for electric vehicles have a very large rated capacity. If an electric vehicle runs for a long time or an electric vehicle is abandoned due to a traffic accident, the electric vehicle battery becomes a waste battery. Even in vehicles that are being abandoned, the remaining capacity of waste batteries for electric vehicles is sufficient for other purposes. Waste batteries for automobiles are very expensive, so they need to be recycled and reused, but there was a problem that the standards for measuring the performance grade of waste batteries for recycling and reuse were insufficient. As a method for measuring the remaining capacity of waste battery, the most stable and reliable method is to measure the remaining capacity of battery using full charge and discharge. However, the inspection method by the full charging and discharging method varies depending on the capacity of the battery, but it takes more than a day to inspect, and many people are making great efforts to solve this problem. In this paper, an electric vehicle battery residual capacity analysis technique using voltage deviation between cells was studied and analyzed as a method to reduce inspection time for electric vehicle batteries. To this end, a full charging and discharging-based capacity measurement system was constructed, experimental data were collected using a nose or waste battery, and the correlation between the voltage deviation and the remaining capacity of the battery pack was analyzed to verify whether it can be used for battery inspection.

A Preemptive Detection Method for Unknown IoT Botnet Based on Darknet Traffic (다크넷 트래픽 기반의 알려지지 않은 IoT 봇넷 선제탐지 방안)

  • With development of computing and communications technologies, IoT environments based on high-speed networks have been extending rapidly. Especially, from home to an office or a factory, applications of IoT devices with sensing environment and performing computations are increasing. Unfortunately, IoT devices which have limited hardware resources can be vulnerable to cyber attacks. Hence, there is a concern that an IoT botnet can give rise to information leakage as a national cyber security crisis arising from abuse as a malicious waypoint or propagation through connected networks. In order to response in advance from unknown cyber threats in IoT networks, in this paper, We firstly define four types of We firstly define four types of characteristics by analyzing darknet traffic accessed from an IoT botnet. Using the characteristic, a suspicious IP address is filtered quickly. Secondly, the filtered address is identified by Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) or Open Source INTelligence (OSINT) in terms of an unknown suspicious host. The identified IP address is finally fingerprinted to determine whether the IP is a malicious host or not. To verify a validation of the proposed method, we apply to a Darknet on real-world SOC. As a result, about 1,000 hosts who are detected and blocked preemptively by the proposed method are confirmed as real IoT botnets.

A Case Study on the Hybrid Reinforcement Retaining Wall System Reinforced by Soil Nail and Steel Strip (쏘일네일과 강재스트립으로 보강된 복합보강토옹벽 시스템의 사례연구)

  • The reinforced earth wall, which is able to improve the strength of soil highly, is required in case of supporting high surcharge load such as high speed rail way, high embankment road, and massive reinforced earth wall in a mountainous area. And also, it is continuously required that the method is able to minimize the amount of excavated soil on account of environmental issue, boundary of land, etc., on excavation site. However, because the required length of reinforcement should be $60{\sim}80%$ of the height of reinforced earth wall for general reinforced earth wall, in fact the reinforced earth wall is hardly applied on the site of cut slope. In this paper we studied the design and construction cases of hybrid reinforcement retaining wall system combined with steel strips and soil nails, connecting the reinforced earth wall reinforcements to the slope stability reinforcements (soil nails) to ensure sufficient resistance by means of reducing the length of reinforcements of reinforced earth wall. And the feasibility of hybrid reinforcement retaining wall system, suggested by real data measured on site, is also discussed.

Analysis on Propagation of Highway Traffic Flow Turbulence at Entrance-Ramp Junctions (교통류 난류현상을 이용한 고속도로 합류부의 영향권 분석)

  • In general, an influenced area of merging section is defined as 500 m including 100 m upstream and 400 m downstream. However, from an observation of the actual traffic flow, it is found that merging effect influences more on downstream than upstream. In this study, an influenced area of merging section on freeway is analyzed by using turbulence which is defined as conflicts between vehicles. In order to overcome the limits of existing traffic flow detection system established with intervals of about 500 m, this study uses raw data collected from the detectors which are established in entrance ramps with similar road conditions. To divide data of each point into similar road conditions, the data of total 72 hours is sorted by Level of Service. An influenced area analyzed by standard deviation of speed is 700 m section of highway, including 300 m upstream and 400 m downstream, for both right and left ramps. It is the result including upstream 200 m more than previous studies.

  • Recently, the city railway in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) has offered a low quality of service as a passage time, because it was operated slowly. So, the people who live in modern society are not satisfied about passage time, therefore, this study tried to make that the subway in the SMA becomes a more functional and effective wide-area-transportation-network through an express train introduction's method which examined cases from abroad and current system. and then presented how express train could be applied to current system. In a case study, We used the An-San Line and Su-In Line as a examples and developed a schedule which can minimize the delaying time of subway by using Branch & Bound Algorithm. The train operational plan was loaded to consider a railroad siding, Obtained site, and the dispatch interval(three to ten minutes) for the express and local lines and finally, We presented an alternative operational plan which made by those factors.

Estimation of Perceived Curve Radius Considering Visual Distortion at Curve Sections (곡선부 시각왜곡현상을 고려한 인지곡선반경 산정에 관한 연구)

  • The seriousness of a traffic accident appears relatively higher on the curve sections compared with the straight sections due to a change in speed caused by a change in the driver's sight. In particular, the visual distortion phenomenon, one of the dangerous factors taking place on the curve sections, appears different according to the road's geometric design. Although it is a genuinely principal design factor which should be necessarily considered in designing a road, the previous researches on establishing the design standards for it have been insufficiently conducted. As a result, the establishment of the road design standards for the curve sections considering the sight distortion phenomenon is desperately required. This research examined the previous researches on the driver's behaviors, the driver's sight characteristics and the perceived curve radius on the curve sections, and developed the theoretical model of perceived curve radius to which a mathematical technique is applied in consideration of the visual distortion phenomenon on the two-lane curve sections in a local area. In addition, after the theoretical visual distortion was calculated on the basis of the theoretical model of perceived curve radius, the range of error on the theoretical recognition radius model formula was verified through comparing it with the previous researches' experiential visual distortion level and analyzing both of them. As a result, it was observed that as the curve radius practically increases in the theoretical recognition curve radius, the range of error tends to go down, which reflects well the characteristics of the curve sections on the road. Based on this research, it is expected that this research will be helpful to eliminate the safety defects when designing the curve sections and contribute to develop the road design standards considering human factors in the future.

Taxonomic Review of Cottiusculus nihonkaiensis (Cottoidei: Cottidae) from Korea (한국산 점줄횟대 Cottiusculus nihonkaiensis(둑중개아목, 둑중개과)의 분류학적 재검토)

  • The genus Cottiusculus Jordan and Starks 1904 (Cottoidei: Cottidae) comprises four species worldwide, three species in Japan, and two species in Korea. Cottiusculus species are characterized by a compressed head and body without scales, except for lateral-line scales, a preopercle with four spines, a curved uppermost preopercular spine with small dorsal spines, and teeth on the upper jaws, vomer, and palatines. Two Cottiusculus species have been recorded in Korea: Cottiusculus gonez and Cottiusculus nihonkaiensis. Among these, "jeom-jul-hoet-dae" specimens were initially identified as Cottiusculus schmidti by many Korean Ichthyologists. However, since C. nihonkaiensis was reported by Kai and Nakabo (2009), most such specimens have been identified as C. nihonkaiensis. To clarify the taxonomic status of "jeom-jul-hoet-dae", we conducted morphological and molecular analyses collected from the coasts of South Korea, and compared our findings with previous reports. Japanese and Korean C. nihonkaiensis specimens mostly consistent in some proportional measurements, our molecular results indicate that they are the same species. C. nihonkaiensis, "jeom-jul-hoet-dae" distinguished from other congers by combination of following characters: simple nasal spines, two branched cirri at the upper jaw, cirri at the opercular, preopercular, and lateral lines, and a number of blotches below the lateral line.
