  • In order to cool the SMES coil to the operating temperature, conduction cooling is generally used. However, it often consumes a large amount of electric power because of it's continuous cryocooler operation. This can also lead to poor thermal stability and serious protection problems of the system. Solid nitrogen (SN2) can counter those disadvantages in the conduction cooling system because it has a large heat capacity. Particularly, a large amount of enthalpy with a minimal weight to the cold body of SN2 makes a compact and portable system by increase a recooling to recooling time period (RRTP) value. A conceptual design of the proto-type SN2 cooling system for a portable HTS superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system will be introduced in this paper.

  • Effects of cooling condition after solidification on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of 0.36Mn containing ductile cast iron have been studied based on the minimized addition of Cu and Sn for vehicle component applications with better quality and cost competitiveness. Cu and Sn were selected for additional elements judging from the well-known fact of strong tendency of pearlite promotion followed by the tensile property improvement. After pouring of the Mg treated cast iron melt with various chemical compositions into the block specimens, two ways of post solidification cooling conditions were applied for comparison; both cooling in the mold and cooling in the air after dismantle at 800℃. The pearlite fraction of the mold-cooled specimens was analyzed as 27-44%, with the tensile strength and elongation of 513-568N/mm2 and 10.4-14.3%, respectively. Whilest, the air cooled specimens showed the pearlite fraction of 77~85%, with the tensile strength and elongation of 728~758N/mm2 and 3.2~6.0%, respectively. It is worthwhile to note that the remarkable improvement of both tensile strength and elongation of the ductile iron was achieved by the present air cooling condition with the minimized combined addition of Cu and Sn to the 0.36Mn containing ductile iron.

  • The progenitor of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is mainly believed to be a close binary system of acarbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) and non-degenerate companion (single degenerate) or another WD (double degenerate). However, it is unclear which system is more prevalent. Here, we present a high cadence optical/Near-IR light curve of normal but slightly faint type Ia SN 2019ein from IMSNG project. We fit the early light curve (t <+8.3 days from the first detection) with various models to find the shock-heated cooling emission from SN ejecta-companion interaction. No significant shock-heated cooling emission is found, from which we constrain the progenitor star size as the following. The upper limit (Rupper,*) of the companion size in R-band is ~0.2R when forcing the first light time (tfl) to have one value and ~0.9R when using the mean value of tfl from the fitting in each band. Assuming the source of the I-band curve is almost powered from the radioactive decay, we obtained Rupper,*~1.2R. The early B-V color curve is in agreement with the model color curve of the 2M main sequence companion. These results allow us to at least rule out large stars like red giants as a companion star of the binary progenitor system of this supernova. B-R and V-R color do not show any significant signs of a red bump, which shows a thin helium shell (MHe<0.1M) for the sub-Mch WD (double detonation model). In addition, we estimated the distance to NGC 5353 as 37.098±0.028Mpc.

  • Design of experiment was applied to analyze the shrinkage characteristics of the bobbin molded by injection molding. Among lots of design and processing conditions, the thickness of a bobbin and cooling conditions of a mold were considered. The temperature difference between top and bottom parts of the bobbin was considered as the objective to minimize the shrinkage of a bobbin. Optimal thickness of a bobbin was 2.0mm at the part of body and 1.5mm at the part of wing, respectively. Optimal cooling conditions such as cooling time and coolant inlet temperature were 12 second and $12^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The magnet system of KSTAR(korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) is consisted of 16 TF (Toroidal Field) coils and 14 PF (Poroidal Field) coils. Internal cooling CICC(Cable in Conduit Conductor) type conductor is used for both of TF and PF coil systems. The conduit material for $Nb_3Sn$ cable is Incoloy 908 and 316LN stainless-steel was used as conduit material for NbTi cable. $Nb_3Sn$ CICC is used for all TF coils and PF1-5 coils while NbTi CICC is used for PF6 and 7 coils. $Nb_3Sn$ and NbTi strands were made for KSTAR superconducting strand. They are satisfied with KSTAR superconducotr requirements. The $Nb_3Sn$ strands supplied from three companies; MELCO (Mitsubishi Electric Co.), OAS (Outokumpu Advanced Superconductor) and KAT (Kiswire Advanced Technology) were used. A special CICC jacketing system is developed for the KSTAR CICC fabrication which uses the tube-mill process consisted of forming, welding, sizing and squaring procedures. The. procedures for cabling and jacketing of CICC for TF and PF coils and their results including the geometrical specification and characteristics of strands are described.

  • Numerical investigation is made to study the effects of natural convection on the formation of macrosegregation of a Pb-Sn alloy solidification process in a 2-D confined rectangle mold. The governing equations are calculated using previous continuum models with SIMPLE algorithm doring the solidification process. In addition. to track the solid-liquid interface with time variations. the moving boundary condition Is adopted and irregular interface shapes are treated with Boundary-Fitted Coordinate system. As the temperature reduce from the liquidus to the solidus, the liquid concentration of Sn. the lighter constituent, increases. Then the buoyancy-driven flow due to temperature and liquid composition gradients, called thermosolutal convection or double diffusion, occurs in the mushy region and forms the complicated macrosegregation maps. Related to this phnomena, effects on the macrosegregation formation depending on the cooling condition and gravity values are described.

  • The progenitor of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is mainly believed to be a carbon/oxygen white dwarf (WD) with non-degenerate (single degenerate) or another WD companion (double degenerate). However, there is little observational evidence of their progenitor system. Recent studies suggest that shock-breakout cooling emission after the explosion can constrain the size of the progenitor system. To do so, we obtained a optical/Near-IR light curve of SN 2019ein, a normal but slightly sub-luminous type Ia supernova, from the very early phase using our high-cadence observation of Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies (IMSNG). Assuming the expanding fireball model, the simple power-law fitting of the early part of the light curve gives power indices of 1.91 (B) and 2.09 (R) implying radioactive decay of 56Ni is the dominant energy source. By comparison with the expected light curve of the cooling emission, the early observation provides us an upper limit of the companion size of R∗≤1R⊙. This result suggests that we can exclude a large companion such as red giants, which is consistent with the previous study.

  • Ag-Au vein ores from the Weolyu mine, Youngdong district, contain significant germanium (up to 145g/t, average 34.9g/t), in the form of argyrodite ($Ag_8GeS_6$). Mineral chemistries of argyrodite and its associated minerals were determined by electron probe microanalysis. Twenty eight elements in thirteen ore samples were analyzed using an ICP mass spectrometer. Argyrodite occurs in the paragenetically later mineral assemblage consisting of carbonates+quartz+native silver+argentite+Ag-sulfosalts, indicating that the germanium mineralization represents the culmination of a complex mineral sequence which includes early gold and late silver deposition. The mean formula of the argyrodite is $Ag_{7.90}\;(Ge_{0.76}Sn_{0.04})S_6$, with minor amounts of Cu, Fe, Sb, As, Sn, and Zn. The Weolyu argyrodite shows systematic substitutions of Ag by Cu, and of Ge by Sb. Chemical analyses of vein ores indicate that metals were precipitated in the order of $Fe{\rightarrow}Pb$, $Zn{\rightarrow}Cu{\rightarrow}Ag$, Sb, As, Ge. Germanium has a strong geochemical affmity with As and Sb, and Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, and Sr show weak positive correlations with Ge. Germanium deposition at Weolyu was mainly a result of cooling of hydrothermal fluids (down to $175^{\circ}C{\sim}210^{\circ}C$, due to increasing involvement of cooler meteoric waters in the epithermal system.
